Ysabella Canto, 18, of Tampa, Fl., was traveling westbound on Interstate 10, near mile marker 248, on Saturday, July 30 at 11:15 a.m., when, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports, Canto claims that her eyesight became blurry and she was rubbing her eyes to regain her sight. That action caused her to become distracted, and her 2001 Volvo S60, which was in the inside lane of I-10, began to travel off the roadway and into the median.
When realizing this, Canto immediately overcorrected her steering response as she attempted to bring her Volvo fully back onto the roadway. Instead, her vehicle traveled across both westbound lanes and entered the north shoulder, where she continued to travel down the slope and into the treeline bordering the interstate.
The front of Canto's Volvo struck an oak tree, and the rear end of her vehicle rotated clockwise, causing the Volvo to disengage from the tree. The final resting place of the vehicle remained in the treeline, however, facing south.
First on the scene were deputies from the Madison County Sheriff's Office, who reported that Canto's vehicle was deep in the treeline. Madison Fire Rescue was later on scene to secure the vehicle and prevent a fire, and Madison County EMS was present to transport Canto, who suffered minor injuries, to a medical facility for examination.
Canto is facing charges of failing to drive in a single lane.
