The intersection between Base St. and Martin Luther King Dr. was the stage for a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision on Thursday, June 2.
Around 2:25 p.m., Deborah Glee, 58, of Madison, was turning her vehicle left (west) off of Martin Luther King Dr. when. At the same time, Guy Sims, 65, of Madison, was traveling south on the crosswalk that runs across Base St. in his wheelchair.
Glee had a green traffic light, and Sims had a pedestrian crosswalk light signal, so both proceeded to move in their intended direction.
Leaving Martin Luther King Dr. and turning west on to Base St., the front left side of Glee’s 2000 four-door Lincoln collided with the rear of Sims’ wheelchair, causing Sims to be ejected out onto the roadway.
The official Madison Police Department report states that Glee was at fault for failing to yield right of way for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
During the collision, Sims suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to the Madison County Memorial Hospital by Madison County EMS.
