Beginning in early August and lasting until the start of 2016, the Florida Department of Transportation will be working on 15 miles of U.S. 90; from the end of the four-lane in Madison, to the Suwannee County line. The project includes milling and resurfacing travel lanes and various side street entrances, widening turn lanes at Donaldson Road, upgrading handicap-accessible ramps including the installation of detectable warning devices at Main Street in Lee, replacing flashing school zone signs in Lee, adding painted rumble strips to road edges for enhanced safety and replacing guardrails at various locations.
There will be some traffic impacts. Drivers should prepare for weekday lane closures after 8:30 a.m., extending up to two miles; the installment of two layers of asphalt will be laid, with the last layer coming at the end of the project; uneven pavement until the final layer of asphalt is installed and, all should remember, speeding fines are doubled when workers are present in the work zone. Lastly, if your work place is located along this segment of U.S. 90, particularly at Donaldson Road, it might be pertinent to establish an alternate route to work in order to avoid road closures and congestion.
FDOT is contracting with The Scruggs Co. of Hahira, Ga. and the project's estimated cost is $5 million. The road's most recent resurfacing took place in 1999, so, as many say, it's about time!
