In recent times, a vast number of people, generally in the younger generations have opted to 'take a knee' or stay silent during the Pledge of Allegiance, or the playing of the national anthem.
The movement truly caught fire after San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick chose to refuse to stand during the playing of the national anthem in protest of what Kaepernick felt were injustices towards African Americans. Immediately, Kaepernick was immersed in controversy; some called Kaepernick's actions out, citing them to be unpatriotic and tactless. Others, however, supported Kaepernick's decision and many have taken to follow the example he set. For various reasons, staying silent during the pledge to the flag or remaining seated during the national anthem has become popular.
In Greenville, two of the council members, for reasons unknown, have decided to stay silent during the Pledge of Allegiance before the start of their meetings.
The actions, or rather, the lack of action from Brandi Seabrooks and Joi Collins caused concern and curiosity from citizens after they refused to join in with the pledge, but rather stared silently at the flag or at their feet.
When contacted by Greene Publishing, Inc. to get their side of the story and find out what cause or belief prompted their decision to remain silent, or whether they believed this would impact any future election, Seabrooks declined by saying “no comment.” Collins also declined by saying that she felt no need to “defend” her decision.
They had nothing to say to those who might have taken concern over their silence during the Pledge of Allegiance.
