Jan. 07, 2011Augustus Davis Aikens, Sr.

Augustus Davis Aikens, Sr., 87, entered peacefully into eternal life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1923, the firstborn child of Samuel Augustus Aikens and Minnie Roberta Morgan Aikens in Orlando. The family moved back to Madison when he was a toddler.

Augustus ("A.D."/ "Sonny Boy") accepted Christ at a very early age and became a member of High Antioch A.M.E. Church in the Cherry Lake community. From this strong Christian foundation, he made the Word of God the final authority in his life.

He attended the public schools in Madison County and left Madison County Training School to enlist in the United States Army during WWII. After his honorable discharge from the military, he returned home enriched by the experience and with numerous stories about Fort Hood, Texas and Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.

Later, A.D. moved to West Palm Beach and worked in the dry cleaning business with his uncle, Jeff Morgan. After living several years in West Palm Beach, he returned to Madison County and married his high school sweetheart, Lucile Balloon, on Sept. 5, 1946. He encouraged and supported her goal of obtaining her Bachelor's and Master's degrees as well as other teaching certifications.

A.D. worked hard on the family farm growing vegetables, livestock, tobacco and cotton. Known for his "Grade A" summer produce, customers looked forward to his seasonal crops each year. He and Lucile instilled this strong work ethic in their children. Not only was he a farmer, but he also learned the trade of shoe repair, and was the neighborhood barber and repairman of both cars and farm equipment. Many can remember him for operating and managing the local Cargo gasoline station for many years. Prior to his retirement, A.D. worked as a security guard at various Valdosta locations.

An active member of High Antioch A.M.E. Church, Bro. Aikens served as a trustee, class leader, church treasurer, Lay Organization member, and Pro-tem of the Steward Board. He was faithful and dedicated to all of his church responsibilities. His tireless efforts to make the sanctuary and church grounds ready for service were vitally important. He was delighted to work in the various capacities and took great pride in maintaining the church in excellent repair and made sure that it was completed in a timely manner. This concern and love for his church remained a priority until his death.

His son, Chester, made it possible for A.D. to continue to worship at High Antioch during his past year and a half residency at Suwannee Health Care Center in Live Oak. He remained a dedicated and concerned member who chaired special programs, specifically Minnie Aikens Day. He also traveled annually to Jacksonville for Leona Daniels Day at the New Fountain Chapel A.M.E. Church until last May.

A.D. also served, with pride, in the PallBearer's Society, where he held several leadership positions and was present at all quarterly and annual meetings until his health began to fail in 2009.

Lucile, his loving wife of more than 63 years, preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 2010.

A.D. and Lucile were the proud parents of five children whom they taught the necessities of life and the importance of an education. In order to build a strong foundation and prepare them for the world, he administered tough love whenever there was a need. A.D. is survived by his children: Barbara Aikens-Stephens, Orlando, Judge Augustus D. Aikens, Jr.(LaGrande), Tallahassee, Dr. Chester A. Aikens (Jean), Jacksonville, Rhonda Lucile Moore (Ronnie), Greenville and Katrina A. Aikens (Jerome), Madison.

The delight of his life were his twelve grandchildren, whom he cherished: JaWanda, Arters "Tip", Jasmine, and Shaka Stephens, Orlando; Kaneitra S. Williamson,P.A. (Keith), Winter Haven; Rev. Augustus D. Aikens, III (Brandy), Tallahassee; Tara Jihad (Ismail), Atlanta; Adrienne Greer (Alfred), Summerville, S.C.; Brice Aikens, Esq., Orlando; Karel Aikens, Tallahassee; Chet and Chae' Aikens, Jacksonville.

His great-grandchildren are Hope, Aniyah, and Madysen Aikens, Khalil, Khamal, and Ruth Jihad, Chance, Jade, Janae and Amari Stephens, Aiden, Alden and Ashton Greer.

Other survivors to cherish his memories include sisters Mattie A. Bowles and Lillian A. Balloon (Rev. Dozier J. Balloon, Jr.), Madison; brother Daniel G. Aikens (Irene), Daytona Beach; sisters-in law, Lillie B. Nesbitt, Madison, Nellie Balloon, Tampa and Leola Garvander (Arne), Richfield, Minn. and brother-in-law, Ulysses "Buddy" Balloon, Tampa.

Because of A.D.'s commitment to his family, dedication to his faith and helpfulness to neighbors and friends, he will be deeply missed.

His faith never wavered and he knew the power of prayer. His steadfastness has earned him a rightful place with the Master. For a job well done, may he now celebrate his victory in reaching his heavenly home,
