The Nu Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Madison County on Oct. 31, 1981, under the direction of the Ninth South Atlantic Regional Director Delores Oliver.
The Chapter will commemorate forty years of service through a series of community service events culminating in an anniversary celebration on Sunday, Oct. 31.
The Nu Omega Omega Charter members were Shirley Barfield, Martha Barge, Marie Bell, Catherine Brooks, Johnnie Burgess, Deloris Jones, Jacquelyn Jackson, Helen Myers, Sandra Monlyn, Jayne Scott, Edna Turner, Lorita Turner, Chrystina Vaught, Evelyn Whitby, Vinette Williams and Joyce Wilson.
The 40th year celebration will kick off with Jacquelyn Jackson, Shirley Barfield, Deloris Jones and Johnnie Burgess, four of the charter members who are still active in chapter, were back in time to repeat the very first community service project, a Rock-a-Thon that supported the Madison Dialysis and Cancer Society. For the anniversary celebration kick-off, a virtual Rock-a-Thon was held on Tuesday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The participants rocked in one-hour intervals at their homes to maintain social distancing.
All contributions will support Madison Dialysis and American Cancer Society. Community support from churches, families, social organizations, businesses and citizens for this worthy project to support these organizations in our county is greatly appreciated. Over the 40-year history of Nu Omega Omega Chapter, the chapter has been active through service to the Madison County citizens through diverse programs that address issues and concerns within the community.
Over the next few months, several community events have been scheduled in celebration of 40 years of service in Madison County. The chapter is committed to continuing their stellar service to the community that began in 1981.
