Madison County High School (MCHS) Senior and student body President, Simeria Alexander has begun sitting in on meetings of the Madison County School Board. Alexander said her goal is to “do as much as possible [in order] to be an asset to the school.”
It did not take long for Alexander to make an impact while performing her new duties with the School Board. At the previous meeting on Sept. 6, the board discussed the cancellation of the Homecoming Parade. After discussion, the board had voted to keep the parade. In response to the idea presented by Superintendent of Schools, Doug Brown, that student participation in Homecoming activities had waned in recent years, Alexander announced that the MCHS student body was considering having contests during Homecoming this year in order to encourage more student participation. This news was met with great enthusiasm by all the board members as many of them reminisced about the Homecoming float contests that took place when they were in school.
Alexander also told the board that the MCHS Student Government had plans to sponsor a debate among the candidates running for School Board and Superintendent of Schools. Alexender informed the Board members that she would moderate the debate. This drew a bit of nervous laughter among the board members that are currently seeking re-election.
In addition to the work she does as Student Body President, Alexander serves as a Peer Tutor at North Florida Community College, where she tutors students in Algebra and Biology. If her first few weeks in office are any indication, Simeria Alexander may be a force to be reckoned with, even at her young age.
