On Wednesday, Aug. 31, the Board of Madison County Commissioners held an emergency meeting in order to discuss preparedness plans for incoming Tropical Storm Hermine. At the meeting, the Board unanimously approved a resolution that declared a State of Emergency for Madison County due to the incoming storm. This declaration will remain in effect until Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Madison County Emergency Management Director, Alan Whigham, informed the board that his office is prepared to handle the situation. He also stated that an emergency shelter will be opened at 4 p.m. at Madison County Central School. This site was chosen because it meets the American Red Cross criteria for an emergency shelter. When asked how long the shelter will be open, Whigham said, “We will keep the shelter open at least 24 hours. Friday afternoon, we will re-access the situation.” Whigham added, “We don't want to send someone out if there are downed power lines or flooding in their area.”
Additional power from both Duke Energy and the Tri-County Electric Cooperative have been called in to assist in the event of power outages or downed power lines. These crews have already begun pre-staging in order to be on hand quickly, if needed.
All citizens are urged to use extra caution over the next few days. Do not attempt to cross flooded roadways and please report any downed power lines to your local power company.
