Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Thursday, September 10, at 10:40 a.m., a deputy of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a white 2010 BMW for unlawful speed west bound on Interstate 10 in Madison County. The driver, identified as Devin Jamal Landers, 22, of Tallahassee refused to stop and began to actively flee the deputy. Landers passed other motorists by driving the BMW in the emergency lane as well as the grass median. The pursuit crossed into Jefferson County and Landers attempted to exit the Interstate at Highway 257 but was unable to control the BMW at the end of the exit ramp. The BMW struck several road signs causing major damage to the vehicle. Landers then re-entered I-10 West continuing to flee. Landers and his passenger, identified as Travis Raynard Thurston, Jr., 22, of Tallahassee began throwing several large plastic bags that contained white powder from the driver and passenger side windows of the BMW.
The pursuit covered more than 30 miles and speeds averaged 130 miles per hour. Deputies were able to safely stop the BMW by making contact with the rear bumper and forcing the BMW into the median where it became disabled. Landers and Thurston were placed under arrest without further incident. During a search of the BMW deputies located a large amount of “FLAKKA” as well as other drug related evidence. Deputies also searched the Interstate for the plastic bags of white powder that was thrown from the BMW but was only able to recover some of the busted bags. There were no visible injuries, however, Thurston requested to go to the hospital. Thurston was medically cleared then joined Landers in the Madison County Jail. Landers is a documented Florida Gang Member and both have extensive drug histories. Landers was charged with trafficking controlled substance (FLAKKA), fleeing/eluding law enforcement and possession of marijuana less than 20 grams. Thurston was charged with trafficking controlled substance and possession of marijuana less than 20 grams.
