The Madison County Health Department has released a health advisory for Lake Francis, based on the presence of blue-green algae blooms in the lake's waters. Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria is frequently found in fresh water bodies in the State of Florida. It can release toxins into the water that makes the water harmful to humans and animals.
It is advised that people not swallow, swim, wade, use personal watercraft, water ski or boat in waters where the algae blooms are present. These blooms can cause ear, eye and skin irritation, hay fever and flu-like symptoms, such as diarrhea. If you should come into contact with algae or discolored or smelly water, you should wash your skin and clothing with soap and water. Do not cook or wash dishes with water that has been contaminated with the algae blooms. Boiling water will not eliminate the toxins.
Keep pets away from the area. The water is not safe for pets. Pets and livestock should be given a different source of water whenever algae blooms are present.
