On Monday, May 9, the Greenville Town Council gathered in regular session. Up first on the agenda was citizen participation. A representative from the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) informed the council that on Saturday, May 21, members of AKA will be beautifying James Tracy Stephens park as part of their Playgrounds Mobilization Day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Public Works Supervisor JC Fead agreed to help with the upkeep of the plants that will be planted around the park. The council approved AKA's request unanimously.
With citizen participation cleared away, the council moved on to the first item on the agenda, Resolution 2016-3, a resolution to abandon the platted roads in the Town of Greenville. A public hearing was held and many members of the audience inquired as to which roads were being vacated. The council agreed to table the resolution for the next meeting in order to find out exactly which roads were being closed.
Next, the council members discussed the renaming of the portion of Overbrook Street that stops at the railroad crossing. The council voted to rename Overbrook Street to Poncho Street. This vote was approved unanimously.
Jim Parrish, Grants Consultant, took to the podium next to discuss possible action regarding the wastewater treatment plant. After the three bids that were offered were rejected during a special meeting that was held on Monday, May 2, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) encouraged the Town of Greenville to delay any action with Phase I of the wastewater treatment plant until the ruling hearing in August that could possibly change the loan amount from 40 percent forgiveness to 70 percent forgiveness. If Greenville does not get the loan change, the water and sewage rates may need to be raised by 50 cents. Parrish advised the council to ask the bidders to hold their bids and come back for review in August. The council voted to resend the vote to reject the bids and proceed with a new application.
In Public Works, Fead asked the council what had happened to the lift station behind the school that he had mentioned during last month's meeting. Town Clerk Kim Reams informed Fead that this matter will be added to the agenda for next month's meeting. The council voted to amend the agenda.
The next Greenville Town Council meeting will be held Monday, June 13 at 6 p.m. at Greenville Town Hall, located at 154 SW Old Mission Ave.
