During a special meeting of the Greenville Town Council on Monday, July 26, the council voted to appoint former council member Calvin Malone to fill the seat vacated by council member Bobby Burnett.
Burnett made his feelings known in a social media post on Thursday, July 22. “I want to thank the wonderful citizens of Greenville for allowing me to serve two terms on your City Council,” said Burnett. “However, I have lost confidence and trust that the current Administration in City Hall, nor Council can solve our crisis in Greenville. Therefore, I have resigned my Seat on City Council and withdrawn my candidacy for reelection. Hope nothing but the best for us Greenville.”
Malone is no stranger to the Greenville Town Council. Malone previously served both as a council member and as Mayor. Malone had placed his name in the hat to challenge Burnett for his seat in this year's upcoming election.
According to the Greenville Town Charter, whenever there is a vacancy on the council, the council members select a person to fill that vacancy. At the beginning of the special meeting, Mayor Brittni Brown passed the gavel to Vice-mayor Brandi Seabrook so she could nominate Malone. Seabrook passed the gavel back to Brown in order to second the nomination. The nomination passed on a 3-1 vote, with council member Barbara Dansey casting the dissenting vote. “It didn't make much sense to me to appoint anyone else, since [Malone] was the only other person running for that seat with [Burnett] choosing not to run for reelection,” said Mayor Brown.
The next regular meeting of the Greenville Town Council is scheduled to take place on Monday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in Greenville Town Hall, located at 154 SW Old Mission Ave., in Greenville.
