On the evening of Sunday, Jan. 30, at 8:12 p.m., the Madison Fire Department was dispatched to the home of Todd and Tammy Richardson, located at 173 SE Macon St., in Madison, for a house fire. First responders arrived on the scene at 8:16 p.m., where the fire had begun due to a defect in the fireplace flue, causing the fire to start inside the wall of the home, which then progressed upward, engulfing the attic space. The private residence sustained major damage to both the attic and roof. Fire Chief Bruce Jordan shared that there is also extensive water damage to the home because the fire was incredibly difficult to extinguish, and it took a great deal of water to stop the fire. None of the residents sustained injuries as a result of the fire. A bank account in the family's name, Todd and Tammy Richardson has been set up at Madison County Community Bank for community members who would like to help support this family during this difficult time with a financial donation. In addition to this, household items such as sheets, bedding, towels, and dishes may be dropped off at the pastorium belonging to First Baptist Church of Madison, located at 133 SE Macon St., in Madison. As a fire safety reminder, Chief Jordan encourages Madison residents to have their fireplaces checked and cleaned by a chimney sweep annually, prior to using their fireplace each year.
