The Madison County High School Cowgirls basketball team played in a very important playoff game against the Hawthorne Hornets on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
Unsurprisingly, as the Cowgirls have had great success this season, the girls completely overwhelmed the Hornets from the very first quarter. In the first quarter, the Hornets were crushed by the Cowgirls with a massive score of 28-3. In the second quarter, the Cowgirls knocked out the Hornets with a final score of 10-7 and again in the third quarter with a final score of 13-5. Although the Hornets showed effort in the last quarter, defeating the Cowgirls with a final score of 7-0, they were not able to overcome the Cowgirls' winning vigor.
The Cowgirls finished the home playoff game with a final score of 51-22.
Because of their win against the Hornets, the Cowgirls moved on to Regionals against Lafayette on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
The Cowgirls had the game in the bag from the very first quarter, winning with a score of 9-3. In the second quarter, the Lafayette Hornets fell short by four points and lost to the Cowgirls with a final score of 16-12 and in the third quarter with a final score of 13-12. The Cowgirls wrapped up the fourth quarter with a final score of 10-8; at the end of the game, the Cowgirls successfully crushed the Hornets with a score of 48-35, ultimately earning a place in the Florida State Class 1A State Championship Final Four.
Because of their success in this hard fought game against the Hornets, the Cowgirls gained the victory and right to play against the Port St. Joe Sharks on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Fl. The game will begin at 10 a.m. If the Cowgirls are successful in defeating the Sharks, they will move on to face off against Trenton and South Walton in a battle for the state crown on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The game will begin at 5 p.m.
This is a fantastic achievement for the Cowgirls, as they are the first MCHS basketball team to ever appear in the state championship final four. The Cowgirls players, along with Head Coach Marcus Hawkins and his assistants LaShon Arnold and Chris Neal have a lot to be proud of!
