The Madison County Board of County Commissioners met on Wednesday, July 27 at 6 p.m. with much to discuss.
In petitions from the public, Teresa Gallegos came forward in attempts to provide resources and education to the community for children and adults with disabilities in Madison County. She commented that it would be beneficial to have a camp with the Madison County Sheriff's Office for children with disabilities. “[Children with disabilities] are most likely to not understand police,” she said.
In public works, the board reviewed the issue of extending the speed limit zone at the intersection of I-10 and CR 255. After much discussion, the board voted to extend the 45 mph speed limit zone both north and south of this intersection. Chairman Rick Davis anticipates business expansion out in that area and mentioned that the speed limit would need to be updated in the future anyway.
In unfinished business, the board discussed the consideration of possible agreement with Nazih Sarkis. The board had previously sold two acres to Sarkis in 2012, who planned to build a facility, however Sarkis did not complete the construction within his established time limit. The board discussed two options: giving Sarkis an extension or exercise their option to repurchase the property and give him another property of equal value, so long as Sarkis provides proof of financial stability in order to build a new facility. The board voted unanimously to exchange properties with Sarkis.
Next, in new business, the board adopted the resolution recognizing County Coordinator Allen Cherry and commended him for his hard work during his time with the county. Cherry expressed his thanks and commented on how much he has enjoyed his time working alongside the commissioners.
The commissioners then approved the new 99-year lease for the agricultural facility and will touch base with the Department of Agriculture to see if the lease has any wording regarding the improvement of the facility. The county received a $500,000 grant to refurbish the facility.
Clerk of Court Tim Sanders presented recommendations for the county's health insurance. The board approved the 17 percent renewal rate of the present plan, along with the standard dental and vision plans.
The board concluded the meeting by approving the millage rate of 10 for the Property Appraiser and scheduling a tentative budget hearing for the next meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 9 a.m.
