With the recent land-clearing on Hwy. 90-West, many are curious about what may be moving in. With conjecture and investigative work, Greene Publishing, Inc. has speculated that a Wal-Mart Super-center could be the anchor store for an extensive new shopping center to be located on the site.
The idea of such a retail outlet has brought about mixed reviews among some in and around Madison County. "I can get just about everything I need from the Dollar General here in Pinetta," said John Earle Wray, of Pinetta. "But it would be good to be able to take the family someplace really nice like Wal-Mart on Sundays."
"I think it would be wonderful," said local resident Louella Snively of the idea of Wal-Mart opening at the site.
"I'd be very excited about Wal-Mart coming to Madison," said Madison County Coordinator Brian Kauffman. "I know that some local businesses may be worried about Wal-Mart coming in, but I think it would actually help everyone. If we can keep people here in Madison rather than them going to Valdosta to go to Wal-Mart, then they would probably spend more of their money here. It would create jobs, which would be good for everyone. I try to find something positive in anything."
It is unclear exactly how long construction will be taking place at the site, however construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. In addition to Wal-Mart, there has also been some speculation that a roller-skating rink will also be located in the shopping area. The site also has ample room for numerous food service and retail locations.
"We have had our eyes on Madison for a long time," said Reginald J. Haskins with Haskins Properties, Inc., a real estate development firm from Atlanta. "Madison and the rural North Florida area is primed for extensive real estate development. We are looking forward to making a big impact on the region."
