Madison Police Lieutenant Reggie Alexander has been named the city’s new police chief following Chief Ken Moore’s announcement that he will retire from law enforcement on Friday, Oct. 7.
Alexander, a veteran local law enforcement officer and a Greenville native, began his law enforcement career in the late 1980's and early 1990's as a corrections officer at Madison and Jefferson Correctional Institutions. He also served with the Jefferson County and Madison County Sheriff’s Offices.
Additionally, Alexander is in his second of two stints with the City of Madison Police Department, the first one from 2004-2006 and the second one from 2008 to present. During his break in service, he remained a member of the city’s police reserves.
In 2015, he advanced quickly from corporal to sergeant and then to lieutenant. Alexander will become the chief on Friday, Oct. 7.
Moore, who like Alexander is a native of Greenville, served as the city’s police chief for 14 months. He joined the department in 2015 following 32 years of law enforcement experience in South Florida, including 13 years in the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Miami office.
“I am very proud of what Chief Moore has accomplished during his time here,” said Madison City Manager Tim Bennett. “He improved accountability within the department, and he revamped processes and protocols to make the department more professional.”
During his employment of 14 months at the Madison Police Department, Chief Moore improved the city’s community policing program, which included being instrumental in the recent Community Policing Forum where law enforcement officials and the public discussed community relationships.
“Chief Moore’s record shows someone who has dedicated his life to law enforcement,” said Bennett. “We respect and applaud his service, and we appreciate him bringing his skills back to his home county before retiring.”
Alexander, meanwhile, inherits a department that has grown to 15 officers and has a $1.1 million budget.
“Chief-to-be Alexander has deep roots here in the city and county,” said Bennett. “His task is to continue the level of professionalism put in place by Chief Moore and to add his own professional touch to the department.”
