Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Friday, Dec. 19 at 2:41 p.m., deputies were dispatched to 129 SW Garner Street in Greenville in response to a burglary and theft complaint. Upon arrival the victim reported that she left her residence at 11 a.m., and returned home at 1:50 p.m., to find that someone had broken into her residence and stolen her television and seven wrapped Christmas gifts. The victim further reported that when she departed her residence all doors and windows were locked and secured. Deputies determined that the person or persons who committed the burglary and theft gained access to the residence by prying the lock on the front door causing damage to the door. Further evidence suggested the perpetrator(s) exited the residence through the back door of the residence that faced a wooded area.
After processing the residence for all obtainable evidence canine “Onyx” was deployed in attempt to locate a track. After scanning the area canine “Onyx” located the scent and began to track through the wooded area leading deputies to an abandoned house. The abandoned home was searched and the stolen television and Christmas presents were recovered, however the suspect was not there. Canine “Onyx” continued to track the suspect until the area became contaminated by curious on-lookers. The stolen television was processed for latent prints and was returned to the victim along with the recovered Christmas presents.
The investigation to identify the responsible person(s) continues. If anyone has any information, please contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 973-4001.
