Are you a high school student looking for a chance to go to college? Now is your chance. It's said you can learn from your history, so Hot 102.7, Star 105.3, and 107.9 The Beat is giving you a chance to further your education with the 12th Annual Black History Scholarship Essay Contest, presented by Piggly Wiggly.
Local high school students from Madison County, both public and private, are invited to submit an essay on the topic of, “Women in Black History.” Judging will be done by a third party and winners will be announced on Wednesday, March. 7, with a celebration reception on Friday, March. 9.
Your essay should address the following: Consider what you know about women in black history. How did they help shape and change it? Was their approach different than men of their time? How are today's women shaping and changing black history? Which women inspire you and why?
All essays must be typed and double-spaced with a minimum of 500 words, but not exceeding 1,000 words. No hand-written or late entries will be accepted and do not put your name on the entry itself.
Entries may be hand-delivered, stapled to the completed entry form, and turned in to the offices of Black Crow Media, located at 1711 Ellis Dr., in Valdosta. Entries can also be uploaded through the following websites: mystar1053.com, thebeat1079.com, and myhot1027.com. The deadline for entry is Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m.
Essays will be judged on a blind basis (no names attached) by an independent, objective committee of judges using a predetermined set of criteria. Judging will be completed by Wednesday, March. 7, and finalists will be notified on Thursday, March. 8. Finalists will attend a ceremony at Black Crow Media on Friday, March. 9, at 3 p.m., where the winner will be announced.
The winner of the essay contest will receive a scholarship. The scholarship will be made payable directly to the college/university student account. Scholarship monies will not be issued to an individual. Essay winner(s) will be required to show photo ID, proof of enrollment and must sign a release upon acceptance of their scholarship.
All high school seniors within a single household are eligible to enter. No purchase necessary. Employees of Black Crow media, affiliated entities, participating sponsors/promotional partners, other radio station employees in the Black Crow Media Group, and the members of their immediate families are not eligible to participate, win or judge.
