Madison County High School (MCHS) graduate, Alex Tyson has signed with Pensacola State College to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level. Tyson is the son of Maria Dickey Tyson, of Madison and Jim Tyson, of Tallahassee. He began playing baseball at the age of four and has been in love with the game ever since then. Playing either pitcher or outfield for the majority of his time at MCHS, Tyson is known primarily as a left-handed pitcher. On handling the pressure of his position, Tyson said, “I learned when I was younger – just get out there and do [the] job, and the outs will follow.”
Tyson's current stats give him a batting average of .361, on base percentage of .418, 21 stolen bases, 53 pitching strike outs, and an ERA of 1.123. This year, Tyson received the Cowboys’ first Hammer Down award in memory of Jay Johnson. Tyson was invited to play in the Joe Ferolito Senior All-Star Game, where he was named the 2016 Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, Tyson made the 2016 First Team, All Big Bend. Meanwhile, as an honor student, Tyson stayed dedicated to his studies as well.
Tyson made playing baseball in college his goal years ago. “I wanted to find a school, team, and coaches that fit me the best,” said Tyson. This mindset allowed him to stay patient while talking with several schools and helped him to decide on Pensacola State. “When I made my visit to Pensacola, I fell in love with the area, the school and the program,” said Tyson. This opportunity, however, has not gone to his head. Tyson said he feels very humbled by the opportunity before him and is “fully committed to the hard work that will be necessary to play at the college level.” Tyson stated he would miss playing on “Boot Hill,” and he is very grateful for the encouragement of Coaches Terry Barrs and Jason Fletcher. “Representing my school and my town has been great, and I will surely miss it,” said Tyson.
In college, Tyson plans to study elementary education. Tyson sees himself becoming a teacher in the future, but hopes to continue playing baseball in some way. “You never know what is around the corner with athletics,” said Tyson. “But with my faith and my family [at my side], I will do my best to play out my abilities as long as the sport will have me.”
