Members of the Nu Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. attended their 64th South Atlantic Conference in Atlanta, Ga ., March 22 through March 26. The Regional Conference is comprised of members from Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Cluster IV graduate and undergraduate chapters from North Florida and South Georgia were the host chapters for this enlightening experience as members embarked upon the journey to enhance Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's knowledge and skills to make their sisterhood unique in every way. Over 5,600 members were in attendance as they came together with Georgia on thier minds. The theme for the Conference was "Pearls in Action: Preserving Our Legacy, Protecting Our Future," with a commitment to historically black colleges and universities (HBCU's), and their service project was "AKA One Million Backpacks." Members from all three states collected backpacks for students in the Atlanta area.
The South Atlantic Region is considered to be "Pearl Perfect & Ivy Strong" as members continuously strive to be of "service to all mankind." Florida is one of three states, including Georgia and South Carolina that make up the South Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha. The region is comprised of 165 graduate and undergraduate chapters and 10,000 members.
The opening session of the Conference was held on Friday, March 24 at the Georgia World Congress Center, and featured drum majors from Florida A&M University, South Carolina State University, and Clark-Atlanta University.
Nu Omega Omega, in emerald and white with pearl accessories, was the host chapter for the Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) Luncheon on Thursday, March 23. The Foundation supports lifelong learning through scholarships to recipients for a brighter future as they pursue a college education.
Members in attendance from Nu Omega Omega were Peggy Williams, Regina Glee Nash, Emily Dickey, Deloris Jones, Gwendolyn Johnson, Glenda Branch, Pamela Johnson, RaShauntah Jackson, Tracie Jones, Jacquelyn Jackson, Audrey Davis, Annie M. Barfield, Willene Herring, Shirley Barfield, Rhonda Alexander, Danae Johnson, VeEtta Hagan, Kim Graham, Elvira Miller, Carolyn Ray, Gail French, Marion Stephens Jackson, Makisha Cheeks, Zandra Gilley, Joi Collins, Jada Williams, Shaneika Mitchell, Denise Robinson, and Felisicia Hinton. This conference experience was enjoyed by all in attendance, especially the first-time attendee members.
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are known to make a pink and green presence wherever they go. Their voices can also be heard each year as they participate in AKA Day at the Capitol. On April 5, women from across Florida gathered at the state capitol in Tallahassee, to support initiatives and learn more about state laws. "Lawmakers must know that we are watching and holding them accountable for being the voice of the people," said a participant.
Ladies from the Nu Omega Omega chapter participated in Town Hall Meetings addressing “Health Disparities in the Minority Community” and on “The Criminal Justice System.” Attendees advocated for issues facing their respective communities with their legislative members. Members also attended the National Pan Hellenic Luncheon where guest speaker Malik Yoba, from the hit television shows Empire and Designated Survivor, shared his experiences in education and outreach. Attending the Florida AKA Day at the Capitol were: Peggy Williams, President; Regina Glee Nash, Vice President; Makisha Cheeks, Audrey Davis and Emily Dickey.
