Driver Killed

The driver of a 2001 Kia Sephia was killed in an accident at the 267-westbound milepost on Interstate 10 on Sunday morning, April 7.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the driver was traveling west on I-10 in the left travel lane. For unknown reasons, the driver veered to the left and off the roadway, where the vehicle traveled southwest across the grass median and across both eastbound traffic lanes.
The Sephia continued traveling in a southeasterly direction onto the south shoulder where it collided with multiple trees on the south shoulder of I-10 with its front.
The car came to a final rest, facing in a northwesterly direction.
Madison County Paramadic Michael Raines pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
The name has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Three Injured In Two Pickup Crash

Three people were injured in a wreck on Rocky Ford Road at NE Bayberry Road on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Wyatt C. Hunter, 16, of Madison, was westbound in a 2012 Toyota Tundra on NE Bayberry Road and had stopped for a posted stop sign at Rocky Ford Road.
At the same time, Jerry L. Warren, 26, of Madison, was driving south on Rocky Ford Road in a 1996 GMC Sierra.
Hunter entered the intersection in front of Warren, striking the right side of Warren’s GMC with the front of the Tundra.
The GMC overturned and came to a final rest facing in a westerly direction.
Hunter’s Toyota came to a final rest on the southwest corner of the intersection, also facing in a westerly direction.
Jerry Warren and his passenger, Ollie May Warren, 43, also of Madison, and Hunter were transported to South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Ga., where they were treated for serious injuries.
Madison County EMS, Madison Fire and Rescue, the Cherry Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Pinetta Volunteer Fire Department assisted the Florida Highway Patrol at the scene.
FHP Trooper Gus Smyrnios was the investigating officer.

Lee Man Injured

A Lee man was seriously injured in a wreck on Tuesday evening, Feb. 14, at approximately 5:20 p.m.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Joshua D. Agner, 28, was traveling westbound on State Road 6 at approximately 65 miles per hour.
Agner drove his 2005 Ford F150 off the roadway onto the north shoulder into a ditch and the front of the pickup struck a culvert.
The pickup went airborne and came down onto the front end and overturned onto the roof, coming to a final rest facing east.
FHP Trooper W.E. Harrell was the investigating officer.

U of F STUDENTS IN ROLLOVER CRASH ON I-10

At approximately 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 29, 2012 two University of Florida students were involved in a roll over crash on I-10 at the 248 milemarker.  They were headed for Gainesville from Tallahassee and ran into the median where they hit very soft earth and the vehicle rolled over and landed on the tires.  Both occupants were covered with ants after the crash and one had to be transported to Madison County Memorial Hospital because of an allergic reaction.  Madison Fire/Rescue, Madison County EMS, Greenville Fire/Rescue, Madison County Sheriff’s Department and the Florida Highway Patrol were at the scene.

FATALITY FOLLOWING MOTORCYCLE CRASH

On Sunday,November 13, 2011 shortly after 6:00 PM a deer running across U.S. Highway 90 west of Madison caused a motorcycle crash. The two riders
survived the initial impact with injuries but a car coming east on the highway ran over the female and she was trapped under the vehicle. Three witnesses at the scene lifted the vehicle off the severly injured person so that EMS personnel could provide immediate care. She was flown to a trauma center by helicopter. The male victim was carried by ambulance to another hospital. Madison Fire Rescue, Greenville Fire Rescue, Madison Sheriff’s Office, Madison County EMS and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
Update: According to the FHP, both riders were from Valdosta, Ga. The woman, Tena L. Forrest, 49, was taken to Shands in Gainesville where she died from injuries received after being hit by a driver who did not see her becaiuse there were no street lights and she was wearing dark clothing. The driver, James P. Forrest, 56, was taken to South Georgia Medical Center and treated for serious injuries.

Greenville Man Killed In Crash

A Greenville man was killed in a crash early Saturday morning, Oct. 15.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Henry Lee Roberson, Jr., 27, of Greenville, was traveling east on U.S. 90 (west of SW Pettis Circle in Greenville) in the eastbound lane. The right side of Roberson’s 1995 Chevy Impala exited the roadway on the south shoulder.
Roberson overcorrected, causing the Impala to travel across the centerline, where it began to rotate counterclockwise as it entered the westbound lane of US Highway 90 in a northeast direction.
The car then exited the roadway onto the north shoulder where it rotated counterclockwise several more times. Roberson then began to travel in a northeasterly direction along the tree line.
The Impala struck a telephone junction box and several trees with its left side.
The car came to a final rest, facing towards the southwest on the north shoulder of U.S. 90.
Jerry Ladarick Miller, 37, of Greenville, a passenger in the car was killed in the wreck.
Roberson and passenger, Jamie O’Neal Hampton, 31, of Greenville were seriously injured in the crash.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Madison County EMS and the Greenville Volunteer Fire Department assisted FHP at the scene.
FHP Cpl. Scotty A. Lulley was the investigating officer and the homicide investigator.

Two teenagers miraculously escaped injury after the 2001 Toyota they were riding in collided with a 2007 Freightliner semi on Friday, July 15.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Summer A. Hendrix, 16, of Bartow, and Lucas Jordan Brown, 18, of Winter Haven, were westbound on Interstate 10 in the inside lane near the 263-mile marker.

Hendrix contacted the paved rumble strip and lost control of the Toyota. She crossed the grass median and entered the eastbound lanes of the interstate.

The car continued out of control, crossing the eastbound lanes before finally being struck by the semi, driven by Wilbert Mayes, 59, of Memphis, Tenn.

The Lee Community Volunteer Fire Department and Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Anderson assisted at the scene.

FHP Trooper Tom Roderick was the investigating officer.

Woman Charged After Wreck

A woman was charged with driving with a suspended license and careless driving after a truck overturned on Tuesday morning, July 12.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Shonntay L. Weatherspoon, 25, of Madison, was driving a 2007 Chevy pickup on SW Georgetown Road at a high rate of speed.

Weatherspoon lost control of the truck after running over a speed bump. The truck went off the roadway and hit a utility pole, causing it to break.

The truck bounced off the pole and overturned onto its right side in a deep ditch.

Madison County Deputy Kevin Anderson and Madison Police Department Officer Eric Gilbert assisted FHP greatly at the scene.

FHP Trooper Tom Roderick was the investigating officer.

Car Wrecks On Interstate, Catches Fire At Jimmie’s Tires

This 2001 Mercury was involved in a wreck and a fire. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report by Trooper Tom Roderick, the vehicle running off the road at the 253-mile marker on Interstate 10, the vehicle, driven by Muriel S. Baxley, 63, of Lynn Haven, smashed into a large pine tree after hydroplaning off the road during a rain storm. According to Madison Fire & Rescue, the car ignited and became engulfed after being towed to Jimmie’s Tires on Highway 53 South. Workers were able to detach it from the tow truck before damage could be done to it. Firefighters Billy Howard, Brandon Fleming and Justin Frank are shown fighting the fire in the inset.

A semi truck and an SUV collided at the intersection of Base Street and North Duval Street on Tuesday, June 28.  There is no Florida Highway Patrol report available, but witnesses said that Dennis Odom (driving the semi) was in the left hand westbound lane while Christy Roebuck (driving the SUV) was in the right hand westbound lane.  Odom reportedly did not see Roebuck and made a right hand turn, attempting to get onto North Duval Street when he hit Roebuck’s car. Traffic was snarled for 45 minutes while waiting for an FHP trooper to arrive.  FHP was called to work the wreck in the city because Christy Roebuck is the wife of Madison Police Sgt. Jimbo Roebuck.  No one was injured in the mishap.

Lee Man Injured

A Lee man suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident on Monday, Feb. 28.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Willie M. Pickles, 73, of Lee, was pulling north onto County Road 255 from the eastbound exit ramp of Interstate 10. Pickles was driving a 2005 Toyota van.
At the same time, Frank L. Tellis, 56, of Troy, Ala., was traveling north on County Road 255 in a 2007 Peterbilt semi.
Pickles failed to see the semi approaching and pulled into the path of the tractor-trailer.
The van was struck by the Peterbilt.
Pickles was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Pickles’ passenger, Lindsay McLeod was not injured in the crash.
Tellis suffered not injuries in the wreck.
Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Stout assisted FHP at the scene.
FHP Trooper Tom Roderick was the investigating officer.

SUV Strikes Tree

The back draft from a semi reportedly caused a woman to lose control of her 2003 Ford Explorer Sunday morning, Feb. 6. She and her passenger were injured in the wreck.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Phyllis Kelley Harmon, 62, of Panama City was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in the inside lane, when she lost control of the SUV, causing it to rotate counterclockwise.
The SUV continued rotating counterclockwise, crossing through the westbound outside and emergency lanes. It then continued rotating clockwise, causing the left side of the SUV to strike a tree.
Harmon’s vehicle came to a final rest against a tree, facing eastbound, north of Interstate 10.
The driver and her passenger, Jack Allen Harmon, 61, of Panama City Beach, were treated at the scene by Madison County EMS for minor injuries.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
FHP Trooper J.M. Beauford was the investigating officer.

Man Injured In One-Vehicle Wreck

A 70-year-old man was injured in a one-vehicle accident on Sunday, Feb. 6, after he reportedly swerved to miss hitting a small animal, which came on the roadway.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, at approximately 11:10 a.m., Johnny W. Heady, 70, of Arcadia, was westbound on Interstate 10, between the 237 and 236 mile markers, in the outside lane. Heady told officers that, without warning, a small animal came onto the roadway, into the path of Heady’s 2005 Mercury.
Heady swerved to miss the animal and lost control of his car.
The Mercury went off the roadway, out of control backwards traveling westbound.
The car continued out of control, striking a concrete culvert barrier and then a large pine tree.
The car overturned on its right side after striking the tree.
Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy David Myers and Greenville Fire and Rescue assisted FHP at the traffic crash scene.
Heady refused transport to a medical facility.
FHP Trooper Tom Roderick was the investigating officer.
