MCHS Cheerleaders Need Your Help

By Kristin Finney
Greene Publishing, Inc.
Though school is out, the junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders at Madison County High School are working hard. They are spending the summer trying to raise enough money to attend an NCA (National Cheerleader Association) summer camp. The camp will be held at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
The girls need the community’s help to make this possible. They will be hosting two fundraisers during the break from school. One will be a smoked meat sale by Johnston’s Meat Market of Monticello. The other will be a chicken and rice dinner sale.
For the smoked meat sale, by Johnston’s Meat Market of Monticello, the cost is $25.00. Those who wish to help the girls by participating in this fundraiser can pick from either a Boston butt, picnic ham, turkey breast or sausage. The meats are smoked on a rotisserie for 4-5 hours and are extremely tender and flavorful. The meats can feed between 10 and 15 people. The meats will be available June 24, between 2 and 4 p.m. at the Madison County Courthouse. They will be packed and tagged and ready to go.
The chicken and rice dinners will be on sale for $6.00. Each plate includes chicken and rice, green beans, bread and butter pickles, bread, dessert and a drink. The day of the fundraiser is July 8. The meals will be ready from 11 am until 2 pm at the Madison County Courthouse. The cheerleaders are also offering to deliver the meals if needed.

Cowboys Varsity Baseball To Honor Five At Senior Night

The Madison County Cowboys baseball team will honor five senior ball players Thursday evening at 5:00.  Kelvin Singletary, Marterrius McDaniel, Laterrian McDaniel, Tavarus Dennis, and Jakelby Johnson will play their final home game as the Cowboys host the Leon High School Lions.
Singletary will conclude a stellar career at MCHS.  Considered a top prospect, Singletary has already signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Northwest Florida State College.  He has turned in dominant performances as a hard-throwing pitcher and as a hitter with power and speed.
Marterrius McDaniel has logged time as an outfielder, second baseman, and pitcher for the Cowboys.  Once on base, he is a threat to steal bases.  Laterrian McDaniel has been a starting middle infielder for the Cowboys for most of the season.  He has wielded a strong bat in the top portion of the Cowboy lineup, contributing several clutch hits throughout the season.  Johnson has provided solid play during his starts at first base.  Dennis has seen limited playing time, but provides leadership to the Cowboy roster.
The players will be honored prior to the start of the game with the Lions at Boot Hill.  Although it will be their final home game, these seniors will lead the Cowboys into district tournament play on Tuesday, April 26th, against the Raiders of Rickards High School.

Basketball Update

By MCHS Head Varsity Basketbal Coach Eddie Richie
Boys basketball season is winding down to the end. Varsity has 3 regular season games left, JV has 2. Varsity boys are holding strong to the 3rd seed in the district. Madison hosts the district tournament this year for the first time in 6 years. If things hold true, we will play East Gadsden Feb 11 at 6pm. We lost to East Gadsden by only 2 points at home the last time we played them.

Again, I would like to publicly congratulate the ongoing success of our JV team. As varsity coach, I am extremely proud of those guys and excited about the future of the program. Allen Demps has done a stand-up job, devoting hours upon hours of time to help building a program. The JV boys are currently 17-1 and undefeated at home. Their last home game is Saturday at 4:30 against Live Oak. Lets make sure that they end the year with a bang. After that game, a few will move up to varsity to start preparing for District play.

This Saturday will be Senior Night. The girl seniors will be recognized before their game (around 6pm) and the boys will be before their game (around 7:30). The varsity boy seniors are as follows:

Thomas Weatherspoon
Chris Brown
Stephen Watts
Laterrian McDaniel
Martterius McDaniel
Keith Thomas
Jermaine Hart
Bryan Williams
Nicko Thomas

PLEASE come and support your MCHS basketball program!!!
