Salvation Army Angel Tree Needs A Few More Angels

Children needing that special Angel still need you! The Salvation Army has been receiving applications for families needing Christmas assistance for toys and food and has been over whelmed with request! Food assistance with toys coming second place has been the case for a number of families. The response has been so great that we have had to shorten the application period to insure that sufficient support for the families who have applied can be found reports Sergeant George Blevins.

Please come by the Courthouse and adopt that special child and become their Angel.

If your Church home would like to join with our fellow supporting Churches and participate in the can food drive please let us know we will be glad to provide boxes for your use.

The Salvation Army’s North Central Florida Music Conservatory held their final festival on Friday, July 1, at the old historical Jail building. The concert, under the supervision of George and Gale Blevins, received great praise. The three-week youth music ministry introduced several dozen students to a broad range of music, concluding in the concert that attracted family, friends and supporters from throughout the county.

The Blevins led a devoted team of instructors/counselors, as well as local volunteers, who combined to bring success to this second annual band camp. Of course, traditional Bible study was also emphasized during the morning segment of a program that also offered lunch, snacks and the use of instruments at no charge.

The final festival featured group and individual performances in a variety of categories. All agreed the selections were delivered exceptionally well, especially considering most students had never played prior to the program. Instructors from Perry were Kevin Moore, Candice Story  and Janea Murphy  Joining them, from Madison, were David Sanders, Aaron Pitts and Zet Primm. Each were notably pleased to participate in this great community youth service.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from the Madison County Commissioners in allowing us to use the Old Historical Jail Building. The Salvation Army, known as the North Central Florida Outpost, has been in Madison and Taylor County for nearly three years. We have been busy with our neighbor feeding program, Bicycle for kids, Angel tree and food box Christmas programs, as well as social service and other need services.

We are excited to bring the opportunity for kids to participate in our local music camp and send some kids to our Music Institute in Starke as well. The Salvation Army is supported entirely by public donations. We receive no federal or local government funding, so our programs depend on local donations, without which these programs would not be possible,” George Blevins  noted.

In addition to the musical numbers, awards and special recognition were presented, featuring:

CREATIVE ARTS AWARDS:

  • Keyboard Elective: Jaylon Reaves
  • Guitar Elective: Shedrick Johnson
  • Coreo-drama Elective: Marley Burrows
  • Chorus: Corbin Brown

BAND AWARDS:

  • Coronet: Lauryn Burrows
  • Baritone: Jamarrion Coasey
  • Trombone: Ja’Bryan Butler

MUSIC EDUCATION AWARDS:

  • Bible Award:  Kelsie Peacock

OUTSTANDING CAMPER AWARD:

  • Hannah Sparks
  • Sa’Mya Wright

Not in the photos of the final concert were Eli Curl, Brishauna Conners, My’Aisa Arnold, Jalisa Daniels and Jordan Robinson, our most experienced musicians, they were at our Florida Music Institute camp in Starke the last week of camp which was an award of its own.

The Salvation Army is very proud to be in Madison County and continues to utilize music development as a core group activity, currently possessing the largest organized band in the world. Madison kids go to the Salvation Army’s “Florida Music Institute” FMI at Camp Keystone near Starke Florida. While many kids over the years have attended our community camp at Camp Keystone these are the first young people from Madison to attend the Florida Music Institute.
Each young person pictured is a recipitant of a scholarship awarded at last year’s Madison’s Salvation Army’s Music Camp, they continued their music interest/studies during the school year by either continuing with the Madison Music program and or their school band thereby continuing to demonstrate their interest in music. They will be joined by young people from all over the state attending the Music Institute to continue developing their God given talents in Music as well as in the dramatic arts. Our programs at Camp Keystone are staffed with the best instructors and are chosen from all over the USA for their talents in their respective field; The Salvation Army’s Florida Music Institute is one of the finest Salvation Army Music Camps in the USA.
We are very proud of this group of young people; each young person is a musician in their own right and will represent Madison County very well. They have studied hard and have earned the right to performed with the best and brightest that Florida has to offer.

The Madison Correctional Institute and their dedicated staff are well known for their assistance to Madison County, what is lesser known is the work they do preparing the inmates in their charge to reenter society as productive citizens. MCI staff like Sgt Goins who has been at the heart of this program development for over a year now credits the Warden and his officers for making this program a reality
The Madison County School System will be the point of contact to request a bicycle for your child, knowing that Teachers will do the most good in using these bicycles for incentives, promoting exercise and rewards for our children.

A Healthy Relationship

Fond des Negres, Haiti – A new cholera treatment center (CTC) was opened on Jan. 25.

Erected in just 15 days, the project required the leveling of land, clearing of roads and installation of waste removal and water delivery systems on the plot of land formerly used as a farm by The Salvation Army in Fond des Negres.

The CTC features a carefully designed maze of tents that are sanitized and prepared to receive and care for patients through every stage of infection. From triage to recovery, the CTC delivers intensive rehydration therapy and monitors fluids lost in order to balance rehydration efforts.

There have been nearly 4,000 confirmed cholera-related deaths throughout the country since the epidemic began in late 2010. The Salvation Army’s Bethel Clinic, at its peak of treatment, saw some 250 cases in only two months. The opening of the CTC will increase the Army’s capacity to effectively treat those in the surrounding communities who suffer from the infection. According to the United Nations, the Cholera mortality rate is down from 10 percent to two percent. With the addition of the CTC, The Salvation Army and Médecins du Monde are doing their part to insure those numbers continue to decline.

In addition to the quarantine and treatment areas of the Bethel Clinic, The Salvation Army has been taking steps to prevent the spread of Cholera since the epidemic began. Vital supplies including soap, disinfectant, oral rehydration packets and antibiotics have been distributed via community centers (churches and schools) throughout the country. In Port-au-prince, efforts have continued through the primary health clinic, College Verena primary and secondary school and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp next to The Salvation Army’s compound.

The Salvation Army’s efforts to treat and prevent the spread of Cholera have been made possible through partnerships with Médecins du Monde, The Salvation Army’s Canada and Bermuda territories and a donor in the Bahamas.
