Obituary: Joe A. Akerman, Jr.

Joseph Alexander Akerman, Jr. of Madison, Florida passed away in Tallahassee on July 16, 2011 after a brief illness.

Born in Orlando, Florida, January 30, 1930, he was the son of the late Frances Norman and Joseph Alexander Akerman, Sr. A graduate of Orlando High School in 1948, Akerman then graduated from the University of Florida in 1952. He studied art in Paris, France at the Grande Chaumere in 1956. He received a Master’s degree from Rollins College in 1965. His academic honors include a Fulbright Fellowship to British Columbia, Canada where he taught in 1967-68 and a fellowship from the Institute of Southern History at the Johns Hopkins University where he studied history and received an advanced degree in 1969-70.

Joe started teaching at North Florida Jr. College in 1965, retiring in 2003 after teaching several generations of students in the six-county area. He was an avid Gator fan and was proud of the scholarship monies he helped raise for students attending the University of Florida. His honors at NFJC include awards for his scholarship work in his writings and his lectures around the state.

While teaching at NFJC, Joe began a part of his life that became very important to him – that was his association with the Florida Cattlemen and their families. In 1976, the Florida Cattleman’s Association published his first book, Florida Cowman, a History of the Florida Cattle Industry. This was followed by American Brahman in 1982 for the American Brahman Association of Houston, Texas, and in 2003 he and son Mark collaborated on Jacob Summerlin, King of the Crackers, which was published by the Florida Historical Society. This book won the Carlton Tebeau award for the outstanding history book in 2005. In 2004, Akerman received the Dorothy Dodd award for lifetime achievement by the Florida Historical Society. He wrote numerous articles, and gave lectures all over Florida on these books and Florida history in general.

Joe’s memberships include the Republican State Committeeman for Madison County; Gideons International; Charter member of the Cracker Cattle Association; the Florida Cattleman’s Association; the Florida Humanities Council; Madison County Historical Society; founding member of the Treasures of Madison County; and the Florida Historical Society. Akerman was an outdoorsman who loved quail hunting with his boyhood buddies, friends, and son Mark and grandson Cole.

Joe was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Madison where he taught a Sunday School class, the “Misfits” and was Chairman of Missions for many years. Akerman served in the U. S. Air Force Reserve out of Homestead, Florida for a short time.

Akerman married the love of his life, Princess, in 1958. Their children are Joseph Mark Akerman (Angie), Gainesville, FL; and Amy J. Hutcheson (Brad), Tallahassee, FL. His beloved grandchildren are Cole and Emma Akerman, Gainesville, FL. He was predeceased by his mother, Frances Norman Connelly, father Joseph Alexander Akerman, Sr., and his step-father Albert P. Connelly, Jr. He was also by his brother, Albert P. Connelly, III (Judy), Asheville, NC; sister, Shane Connelly, Eustis; brother Michael Connelly, Vero Beach; brother Michael Akerman (Lynn), Portland, OR; brother-in-law, Paul R. Jordan, Tulsa, OK; cousin, Hugh Akerman, Clarksville, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m.,Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, Madison, Florida with interment in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison. The family will receive friends 6:00 untill 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at T. J. Beggs, Jr. & Sons Funeral Home in Madison.(850)973-2258. Obituary: Mamie Morrow Smith Anderson

Mamie Morrow Smith Anderson, age 84, went to be with our Lord and Savior on June 11, 2011. Funeral services will be held Tuesday June 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Madison.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be
Monday, June 13, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel, (850) 973-2258.
She was born in Madison but lived in many places in the country. She was a retired registered nurse and returned to Madison after many years in San Diego, Cal. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Madison and the Audrey Newman Circle.
She is survived by her three daughters, Janie (Walt) Corliss of Herndon, Va., Merry (Shane) Kingsley of San Diego, Cal., and Ann Kearns of Fayetteville, N.C., and grandson, Scott (Katelyn) Corliss. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Burley, and brother, George H. Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church of Madison or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Obituary: Margaret Ann Jones

Margaret Ann Jones, age 79, died Monday, June 6, 2011 at her home in Madison.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m., June 9, 2011 at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Madison.

She was born in Fitzgerald, Ga., and lived in Madison all her life. She was a member of the Bridge Club, the Audrey Newman Circle and was a member of First Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter: Cindy Stanland of Madison; grandson, Chris Stanland; and sister, Patsy Sanderson (Bud) of Madison.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Omer Hodnett.

Obituary: Elizabeth Haupt Lusk Kramer

Elizabeth Haupt Lusk Kramer, age 95, of Jennings. passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at The Health Center of Lake City, in Lake City.
Ms. Kramer was born in Lawrence, South Carolina to the late Emil and Paula Schultz Haupt. She worked for a number of years at Jasper Textile and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Jasper First United Methodist Church and attended Jennings Missionary Baptist Church when her health permitted.
Ms. Kramer was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Lusk and Failey Franklin Kramer. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Hill.
Survivors include four sons, Jack Lusk, Monks Corner, S.C., Earl Lusk, Whitmere, S.C., Frankie Lusk, Columbia, S.C., and Jimmy Kramer, Madison.; two daughters, Betty Adams, Jennings. and Fay Robinson, Lake City.; one brother, Sonny Haupt, Summerville, S.C.; a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011 at West Lake Church of God. Interment will follow at West Lake Cemetery.
The family will receive friends between the hours of 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, Jasper..

Buddy McWilliams, Local Realtor, Passes Away

Clayton “Buddy” McWilliams, Jr., age 75, died Friday, May 27, 2011 at his home in Madison surrounded by his family.
He was born November 27, 1935, to Clayton and Selma Stanley McWilliams. He graduated from Madison High School in 1953 and from South Georgia Junior College in 1955. He was a true Georgia Bulldog, having graduated from the University of Georgia in 1958 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Since 1984 he was in the Real Estate business as a Real Estate broker and Real Estate appraiser. Before that, he was the Standard Oil Distributor for Madison County, served as an Administrative Assistant in Gov. Claude Kirk’s Office and was a sales rep Britannica Films before opening a Sears Catalog Store in Madison. After selling the Sears Store, he opened a real estate agency where he continued to work until shortly before he succumbed to cancer.

He was a member of First Baptist church in Madison where he served as a deacon and as a member of the finance committee. He was a member of the Madison Country Club and loved playing golf. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the University of Georgia. He served on the Madison City Commission for several years, and during his term as mayor he was instrumental in getting many streets in Madison paved. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years Jean Phillips McWilliams. He is also survived by his son Clayton McWilliams, III of Madison, and his daughter Linda McWilliams Luke of Darien, Georgia, by his grandchildren Carley Luke and Jake Luke of Darien, Georgia, and by his Brother Larry McWilliams of Muncie, Indiana. Other survivors include his father-in-law and step-mother-in-law Jake and Judy Phillips, and two dear friends Vickie O’Quinn and Ron Boyer. He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Selma Stanley McWilliams and his mother-in-law Edna Phillips.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 30, from 5:00 until 7:00 at Beggs Funeral Home in Madison. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 31, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, Madison.

Obituary: Fred Tracy Reeves

Fred Tracy Reeves, age 74, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Madison.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 PM Friday at Beggs Funeral Home.

He was born October 12, 1936 in Leon County Florida. He was Executive Director with the State of Florida Justice Administrative Commission. He moved to Madison in 1968 coming from Tallahassee, Florida. He was a member of the Madison Lions Club, Linda Tippette’s Bible Study for 15 years, Elder in the Grace Presbyterian Church later joined Fellowship Baptist Church. He graduated Leon High School in 1955 and married in 1959. He was a graduate of FSU in 1963.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Reeves of Madison; 3 sons: Frederick Tracy “Freddy” Reeves Jr. (Vicki) of New Port Richey; Wesley Seay “Wes” Reeves of Madison; George Thomas “Tommy” Reeves of Madison; 1 daughter: Elizabeth Evelyn “Lynn” Reeves Hosseini (Sepehr) of Atlanta, GA; daughter-in-law Lisa Masters Reeves of Tallahassee; 5 Grandchildren: Sidney Nicole Lindsay of Orlando, Benjamin Ethan Hosseini and Joseph Cole Hosseinii both of Atlanta; Kayla Elizabeth Reeves and Abigayle Whitley Reeves both of Madison.

Obituary: Lawrence T. Rowell

Lawrence T. Rowell, 76, of Madison passed away Friday, February 11, 2011.
He was born in Plant City on April 30, 1934.

Lawrence moved to Madison with his parents in 1946. Lawrence owned and operated Rowell’s Bait and Tackle as well as a small engine and lawn mower repair shop for many years.

His parents, David E. Rowell and Maybell Harris Rowell and siblings, Mami R. Johnson, Ruben E. Rowell, John E. Rowell and Charles E. Rowell preceded him in death.

His loving family and friends survive him.

He will be laid to rest at Mount Olive Cemetery on April 30, 2011 at 11 a.m.

Obituary: Lurine (Renie) Ann Dean

Lurine (Renie) Ann Dean born Nov. 14, 1946 at White’s Nursing Home in Boonville, N.Y., went home to be with God on Feb. 14, 2011. She passed away at Big Bend Hospice House, Tallahassee, after a long, hard fight with several bouts of pneumonia.

She attended school at Lyons Falls and South Lewis Central School, graduating
in 1965. She began working as a nurse’s aide in Lewis County General Hospital in 1966.

Renie received her LPN degree from SUNY Morrisville in 1975 and went on to work as a LPN at LCGH working in many of the different hospital departments. In 1995, Renie completed her Registered Nursing Degree and began working as Charge Nurse for the Nursing Home Facility at LCGH, which she retired from in 2003. During her 35 years of nursing she also did volunteer work, including going to Haiti to care for and vaccinate the children there. Renie moved to Greenville in 2006.

Renie was predeceased by her parents Oatley and Bertha (Bates) Dean of Lyons Falls, N.Y., her brother James Dean of Glenfield, N.Y. and her sister Betty (Dean) Weiler of Port Leyden, N.Y.

Renie is survived by her brother, Oatley (Richard) Dean of Utica, N.Y., by her nieces,nephews and their families; Paige (Dean) and Richard Yelton and great-neice Lanie Dean, Katrina (Weiler) and Larry Beltowski and great-nephews, David and Kevin Beltowski, Bruce Weiler and great-nephew Adrian and Amy Weiler, great-great nephew, Robert P. Weiler and brother in law, Robert Weiler.. She is also survived by her special friend and “sister of the heart,” Bobbi Capello and their precious pets, Casey (dog) and two kitties, Emily and Sammie, whom she loved dearly and longtime friends, Marcia Myers and John Herman and many other longtime friends from Boonville, N.Y. She loved animals, gardening, reading, doing needlework, cooking and her computer.

After moving to Greenville, she became a member of a very loving and caring family from the United Methodist Church of Greenville. Many of them spent nights at Hospice House with Renie so she was never alone. The family and friends like to thank Dr. Hartsfield and all the staff at Big Bend Hospice House, for making them all feel welcome and for the wonderful care they gave Renie and for allowing Casey to spend time with her

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Greenville United Methodist Church, 174 SW Church Ave, and all are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asking that donations be made to the Greenville United Methodist Church to help with all the wonderful services they provide for the community. Burial and a memorial service will take place in Boonville, N.Y. in the spring.

Obituary: James Victor Roy, Jr.

A memorial service will be held for James Victor Roy, Jr. on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Preston Gainey officiating.

James Victor Roy, Jr. was born March 26, 1961 in Jacksonville and died February 23, 2011 in Jacksonville.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Christine Kelley and James Victor Roy, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Kim Roy; his sister, Teresa Pridgeon (husband, Rocky); brothers, Harvey Roy of Tifton, Ga., Tommy Roy of Jasper and Freddie Ward of Alabama; daughters, Jennifer Roy of Vidalia, Ga. and Tesa Williamson of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, Summer, Katelynn, Austin, Travis, Hayden, Melanie and Savannah; several nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

Obituary: Rebecca Sue Foskey

Rebecca Sue Foskey, age 70, died Thursday, February 10, 2011 in Greenville.

 

Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2011, at Evergreen Cemetery, Greenville.  Visitation was held Saturday, February 12, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel.

 

She was born and raised in South Point, N.C. and later moved to Vero Beach before moving to Greenville in 1971.  She loved to garden, working in her flowers and vegetables.  She really loved to fish, especially saltwater, early on anywhere she could. She enjoyed crosswords puzzles and being with family.  She would wake up early in the morning and enjoyed being outdoors, taking early walks.  When her husband, J.C., became ill she devoted all her time into taking care of him.

 

She is survived by two daughters, Jenny Sever (Kevin) of Greenville and Rebecca Sever (Michael) of Sirmans; two sisters, Patsy Nicholson of Hiawassee, GA and Elsie Kiliron of Zion, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.

Obituary: Karla Calvert Rooks

Karla Calvert Rooks peacefully died at home on Monday, February 7, 2011 from complications due to heart surgery.

Karla and her two sisters, Winona Calvert Hickman and Dorothy Calvert Segar (both predeceased) were born in Tonawanda, NY, to Clarence and Minnie Calvert who relocated to Inverness, FL, in the early 1930’s. Minnie opened a florist shop, located on the site of the current Hooper Funeral Home, on SR 44 in downtown Inverness.

Karla graduated from Citrus County High School and on May 22, 1943, married Herschel Rooks, a fourth-generation Citrus County cattle rancher, at the Inverness United Methodist Church.

The young couple settled in Lecanto, where they raised cattle, farmed watermelons and developed land. In 1950, they welcomed daughter, Bertha Marie (Allen), followed by daughter Catherine (Cassidy) and a year later a son, Herschel (Sonny) Rooks, Jr.

While in Citrus County, Karla was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Crystal River; she served on the Citrus County Fair Association, Citrus County Planning & Zoning Board and actively worked to help build the Citrus County Association for Retarded Children. Karla and Herschel along with their son and his family relocated to Madison County, Florida in September 1992.

This year, they would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

After relocating, it didn’t take Karla long to immerse herself into the First United Methodist Church of Madison, the Woman’s Clubs in both Greenville and Madison, and the Madison Garden Club activities.

The sorrow we feel at the passing of this beautiful lady, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, is difficult to express.

Karla is survived by husband, Herschel; Herschel (Sonny) Rooks Jr. and wife, Toby of Madison; Bertha Allen and husband, Gordie of Killarney; and Catherine Cassidy and husband, Bart of Madison; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison, 4-7 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011. Celebration of her life and memorial services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 11 a.m, at the First United Methodist Church of Madison. Followed by graveside service at Ebenezer Cemetery in Madison.

Obituary: Keith Wendell Newman

Keith Wendell Newman, age 61, died Sunday, February 6, 2011, in Madison.

Funeral services will be at noon on Friday, February 11, 2011, at Beggs Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service from 11 a.m. until noon at the funeral home.

He was born on November 5, 1949 in Madison, Florida. He retired from the US Army where he served two terms in Viet Nam.

He is survived by his mother, Gladys Newman of Madison; two daughters, Rachel Michelle and Angelique Newman; two brothers, Claude Newman of Ozark, Ala. and Earl Newman of Lee; a sister-in-law, Hiroko Cherry of Madison; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ryan and Roman Alexander Montelongo; and a very close friend, Frances Butler.

Madison: Albert Fox, age 71, passed away Monday, February 7, 2011 at home in Madison.

Funeral services will be 2:00 Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Mt. Olive Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 6 – 8 PM at Beggs Funeral Home.

He was born on August 21, 1939 in Madison where he lived all his life. He was a Truck Driver and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

He is survived by 4 sons: Keith, Kevin, Ronnie and Mike Fox; 2 daughters: Connie Reaves and Sherry Fox; 2 brothers: Buddy and Johnny Fox; 5 sisters: Pauline Fender, Gussie Ryland, Sally Hall, Juanita Duke Russell and Carolyn Pinson.

Obituary: Donald “Keith” Hitchcock

Lee: Sgt 1st Class Donald “Keith” Hitchcock, age 32, died Monday, January 31, 2011 in Aurora, Colorado.

A Memorial service will be 2:00 PM Saturday February 5, 2011 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church.

Keith graduated from Madison County High School in 1996, and attended NFCC. He joined the US Army and was presently serving at Ft. Carson, Colorado. He was a member of Pinetta Baptist Church and also attended Hickory Grove Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife: Sara Hitchcock of Aurora, CO.; parents J. D. Jr. and Alma Agner of Lee; 1 brother Josh Agner (Shirley) of Lee; 3 sisters: Shannon Agner Baughman (John) of Lee; Angela Baldazo-Ahumado (Manuel) of Pinetta; Heather Walthall Russell of Lee; 9 nieces and nephews that he dearly loved.

Revedy Delahunt, age 67, died Monday, January 24, 2011, at home in Greenville.

He was born in Greenville, Florida in 1943 and worked at USG for 36 years and served in the Army for four years.

He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Owens of Greenville, and Candice Turner of Jacksonville; one sister, Clara Orten; grandchildren, Amie Mitchell (Joshua) of Jacksonville and Amanda Owens; three nephews, Billy Delahunt (Michele), Danny Delahunt and Burt Delahunt; great nephews and nieces and seven great-grandchildren.

Frances Lee Ottilia Kelley Edenfield

Warner Robins – Frances Lee Ottilia Kelley Edenfield, 67, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 5, 2011.

Frances was born on November 7, 1943 in Madison. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.  Frances was employed as a  F-15 FMS Production Management Specialist at Robins Air Force Base for twenty six years. She was a former President and member of the Warner Robins Art Association, and a charter member and executive officer of Houston Arts Alliance.  In addition to her love of the Arts, she enjoyed working with flowers and creating gardens.

Her parents, Benjamin Franklin Kelley, Jr. and Martha Louise Tompkins Kelley and grand daughter Lauren Elizabeth Joiner preceded her in death.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, Mary Catherine Edenfield Joiner, Warner Robins; Paul Anthony Edenfield, Buford, Georgia; brothers and sisters, John Benjamin “Ben” Kelley, Raymond Michael “Mike” Kelley, Van Breckenridge Kelley, Dale Randolph Kelley, Darlene Maretta “Maret” Sheffield, Richard Allen Kelley, Debra Montez Signer, Christopher “Chris” Scott Kelley, and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, January 7, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home, Warner Robins.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011 with a visitation prior from 11:00 a.m.until 2:00 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church in Madison, Florida. Edith W. Tyre

Edith W. Tyre, age 78, died Sunday, January 9, 2011, in Gainesville.

          Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 2-3 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home.

She was born on July 25, 1932 in Ray City, Georgia to Norman and Bertie Walker.  She lived in Madison before moving to Jasper.

She worked as a bookkeeper most of her life and was a member of Madison Church of God.

          She is survived by one son, Edwin Tyre of Jasper; one brother, Robert Walker (Robbie); one sister, Elizabeth Haraz, both of Pinetta; and one grandson, Allan Tyre.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Norman  and Birtie Walker; two husbands, Tommy and Jess Tyre; a son; Mike Tyre: two sisters; and two brothers.

Dorothy Moore “Miss Dot” Pridgeon

Dorothy Moore “Miss Dot” Pridgeon, age 85, died Thursday, January 6, 2011 at her home in  Greenville.

Funeral  services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday,  January 9, 2011 at Greenville Methodist Church, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery.  Visitation was Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home,  Madison Chapel.

She was born in Brooksfield, Georgia and lived most of her childhood life in Moseley Hall before residing in Greenville.  She was City Clerk for the City of Greenville for fifty years before retiring.  She was a member of Greenville Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, G. W. Pridgeon Jr  (Darlene) of Perry; George R. Pridgeon  (Lila) of Greenville; a sister, Lucille Cruce, of Madison; four grandchildren George W. Pridgeon III,   Krystle Pridgeon, George Russell Pridgeon, Jr.  (Angela) and Suzanne Tart (Paul); and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and George Quartman Pridgeon.
