Cowboy Bats Still Hot

The Cowboy varsity baseball team traveled to Monticello Monday night for a non-district contest against the Aucilla Christian Warriors, and the offense continued to roll. The Cowboys let loose for – - 9 runs, 15 hits, 4 free passes, 8 RBI’s, 1 home run, 2 doubles and 5 stolen bases. Looking at the stats, one would think a blowout ensued; however, the 9 to 6 score was closer than the Madison faithful would have wanted. With the win, the Cowboys season record now stands at 8 wins and 4 losses, with a district record of 2 and 2. Jarrod Burns picked up the victory pitching 4 1/3 innings, and Heath Carroll relieved for 2 2/3 innings for his second save of the season.

For the game, DJ McKnight led the way offensively going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Patrick Bowen, Aaron Brown, Jarrod Burns and Jake Latner each had two hits including a home run and three RBI’s for Jarrod. Also on the night, Zack Money picked up his third double of the season and 2 RBI’s, and Dustin Bezick and Heath Carroll added singles with Heath driving in his 12th run of the season.

The Cowboys take the field next Tuesday, March 13th when they host the Godby Cougars from Tallahassee for a HUGE District Contest at 7:00pm. This will likely be the game that decides Madison’s fate in the 4A District 2 tournament seeding later in the season. Come have a burger or a dog and join the men as they try and stay undefeated at home.

Nine Innings to Victory

Submitted by Wayne Money
It took nine innings Thursday night, but the Cowboys prevailed over the Berrien Rebels in the second round of the Valdosta Invitational Tournament. Madison improved its record to 3 and 1 with the 5 – 4 victory and play again Saturday, February 25 at 4:00pm against the Houston County Bears in the same Valdosta Tournament. The Cowboys jumped out to an early 2 to nothing lead against the undefeated Rebels but found themselves trailing in the bottom of the fifth 4 to 2. However, as was the case Wednesday night, they battled hard knotting the score at 4 at the end of regulation. The game was then dominated by pitching until the bottom of the ninth when the Cowboys pushed a run across for the well deserved victory.

As a team, the Cowboys racked up ten hits and five free passes. Heath Carroll and DJ McKnight led the way with three hits and two RBI’s each, and Jake Latner, Jarrod Burns, Aaron Brown, and Zack Money pitched in with a hit apiece. Winning pitcher Aaron Brown pitched four shutout innings in relief of Zack Money who on the night had nine strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Cowboys Make All-State

1st team All State Class 3A Football w quotes from Coach Coe

Fullback #9 Tommie Young- I am so proud of the teammate and leader Tommie became this year. He practiced and played hurt all year long and never missed a beat. He is very deserving of being all state and we will really miss him on our offense next year.

Center #53 Gavin Stephens- I have had the privilege to coach some great offensive linemen in my years of coaching and Gavin ranks right up there with the best of them. He is a tough young man who is self motivated and that is a hard combo to beat.

Utlity #22 Sheddrick Williams- Sheddrick is an electric football player. He had over 1,000 return yards this season and ran abck 5 kicks for touchdowns. He also scored on offense and defense. Only a junior, Cowboy fans can expect to see him with the ball a bunch next season.

Defensive Line#6 Keldrick Williams- While undersized for playing noseguard, Keldrick constantly drew double teams and still made play after play. I am more proud of the young man he has become and the maturity and leadership level he showed from his junior campaign to his senior season.

Linebacker #31 Tevin Roundtree- A gifted athlete with a God given burst that not many kids have. You name it, he played it on defense this season. We will really miss his playmaking abilties on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive Back #1 Deshawntee Gallon- 3 year starter, Mr. MCHS, Honor Student. A shining example of what we want our program to be about. Great young man, great student, great football player, and a model citizen.

2nd Team All State Class 3A Football

Utility #29 Deonshay Wells- Not the biggest kid on the block, but maybe the toughest. Runs and plays much bigger than his size would suggest. Still has two more years left to play, which means an exciting future.

Honorable Mention

Linebackers- Willie Gavin and Rashad Guyton- our leaders on defense and two of the toughest and smartest kids we have had come through the program. Very well respected around the Big Bend amongst area coaches. Both will be hard to replace next year.

Cowboys Basketball Hosts Pack The Gym Friday Afternoon

Submitted by MCHS Head Varsity Basketball Coach Eddie Richie
For those of you not traveling to Ocala, MCHS Basketball will host its first Pack-the-Gym Friday, December 2nd against visiting Brooks County (GA). JV Girls start at 3:30. JV boys play after them, followed by Varsity Girls then Varsity Boys wrap the night up.

Saturday, December 3rd, Madison will host Hamilton County for our 2nd Pack-the-Gym of the year. These games are always entertaining. Games start at 3:30 with the same order listed above.

One of the challenges to coaching basketball at a small football school is that we share a lot of athletes. This year, we are supporting 2/3 of our varsity basketball team out on the football field as they make their run to State. The ones playing basketball now are working extra hard and deserve a lot of credit. Even some JV players, mostly freshman, are filling in on varsity and getting some good experience.
