Cowboys Winning Again

Submitted by Wayne Money

After a disappointing two game road stretch where the Varsity Cowboys lost to Suwannee, FL 4 to 3 and Ringgold, GA 16 to 6 , the Cowboy’s baseball team is back at their winning ways. The team traveled to Tallahassee Thursday for a Class 4A Distract 2 contest against the Godby Cougars and came home with a decisive 9 to 1 victory. As a team, the Cowboys had six hits, ten free passes and five RBI’s. With the win, their season record now stands at 3 wins against 2 losses, with a district record of 1 win and 0 losses. Zack Money picked up his second win of the season pitching a complete game with 12 K’s, 3 free passes and 0 earned runs.

On this cold evening, DJ Mcknight led the way at the plate going 1 for 2 with his 3rd HR of the season driving in 3 runs while being intentionally walked twice. Patrick Bowen, Zack Money, Chad Oliver and Akevious Williams added hits, and Jake Latner and Chad Oliver each picked up an RBI. Two big time defensive plays were made in the outfield; one diving catch by Akevious playing in right field and one over the shoulder grab by DJ in center field. Also contributing were Wayne Driggers, Brandon Hammond and Drew Richardson with runs scored. More news worthy of mentioning is the Cowboys check in this week at number 6 in the Big Bend area rankings as voted by Next level baseball.

The Cowboys continue on a nine game road swing today at 4:00pm against Melody Christian Academy in Live Oak.

Cowboys are BAD Hosts

Submitted by Wayne Money

The 2013 Cowboy baseball season started last week at Boot Hill, and the hosts for the Cowboy Challenge were certainly ready to play ball. The Cowboys won Thursday’s season opener against the Lafayette Hornets 13 to 0, and then capped off the challenge with a 4 to 0 win Friday against the visiting Maclay Marauders. Taylor Howell picked up the pitching victory in Thursdays contest allowing only 3 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts over four innings, and Zack Money picked up the victory Friday going four innings while allowing 1 hit, 3 free passes and striking out 9. Freshman, Alex Tyson, got the first save of his young career Friday pitching a strong inning to end the game.

For the two games combined, Cowboy batters racked up 19 hits, 11 walks and 14 RBI’s. Leading the way in hits were Patrick Bowen, Taylor Howell and Akevious Williams with four hits each including 3 doubles for Patrick. DJ McKnight contributed with five RBI’s off 2 sac flys, a double and a 3-run homer, and Jake Latner and Zack Money were walked three times each. Jake picked up 2 hits and 2 runs scored, and Wayne Driggers and Drew Richardson picked up RBI singles.

The Cowboys next take on the Suwannee Bulldogs in Live Oak Friday, February 15, 2013. The next home game is not until February 26th against the Hamilton County Trojans.

Cowboy Xplosion

The Cowboy varsity baseball team traveled to Tallahassee Thursday night for their fourth district game of the season, and the bats were hot. Let’s count – - 15 runs, 12 hits, 10 free passes, 10 RBI’s, 5 doubles, a triple and about forty dedicated hell raisers in the stands. As can be expected, the game ended in a 15 to 5 blowout of the host Florida High Seminoles. The Cowboys season record now stands at 6 wins and 4 losses, and district record at 2 wins and 2 losses. The Cowboys are still making mistakes in the field, costing starting pitcher Aaron Brown 4 unearned runs, but their making some great defensive plays as well. Jake Latner sprinted down and robbed a sure to be double, Zack Money turned an inning ending double play, and Heath Carroll made two awesome saves at first. Definite progress form their defensive struggles Tuesday night.

On the night, Aaron Brown, Heath Carroll and DJ Mcknight had three hits each including a double and two RBI’s for Aaron, two doubles and two RBI’s for Heath, and a double, triple and four RBI’s for DJ. Also on the night, Patrick Bowen pitched in with a double and an RBI, Taylor Howell added a single and an RBI, and Dustin Bezick came through with a pinch hit single. Jake and Zack walked and scored twice, and for the fifth time this year Jarrod Burns was plunked with a pitch. Aaron pitched 4 1/3 strong innings for the victory allowing only one earned run and Heath provided great relief getting the final five outs without allowing a base runner.

Alright folks, come join the guys Saturday, March 10th as they play host to Melody Christian Academy at 5:00pm. Before the contest, the Cowboys will also be hosting an appreciation luncheon for this year’s dedicated sponsors at 4:00pm.

Cowboys Lose Another Close Game

The nine inning game played Tuesday night wasn’t pretty defensively, but it was close. The Cowboys dropped their second district game of the season to the Taylor County Bulldogs 9 to 8 leaving their season record at 5 wins and 4 losses. The game started off nicely enough with the Cowboys jumping out to an early 4 to 0 lead in the second inning, but miscues in the field allowed the Bulldogs back into the game. The Cowboys were still leading 8 to 5 going into the bottom of the seventh; however, the Bulldogs rallied for 3 runs to knot the score at 8. After a scoreless inning by both teams, the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Overall on the night, the Cowboys committed six errors which allowed for four unearned runs.

As a team, the Cowboys could only muster seven hits along with seven free passes. Jake Latner led the way with three hits and two RBI’s, and Heath Carroll came through with two hits. Aaron Brown added two RBI’s, and Adam Odiorne had two of the seven free passes. Zack Money pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out eleven while walking only two. The Cowboys take the field next when they travel to Tallahassee Thursday, March 7th for a 7:30pm contest against the Florida High Seminoles.

Cowboys Even District Record

Cowboys Even District Record

With a great crowd on hand Friday night , the varsity Cowboys evened their district record at one win and one loss with an 8 to 3 victory over the visiting Jaguars from East Gadsden. The Cowboys overall record now stands at 5 and 3 as they head into the middle part of the season which includes four district games in the next eleven days. Coach Barrs thinks the team is starting to come together as evidenced by a strong pitching performance by Jarrod Burns, timely hitting, and a great save at first base by Heath Carroll. Jarrod Burns picked up the victory pitching six strong innings while allowing only four base runners and striking out eleven.

As a team, the Cowboys notched ten hits and six free passes. Aaron Brown led the way with two hits including a homerun. Heath Carroll contributed with two hits and two RBI’s, and Jake Latner, Zack Money and Jarrod Burns pitched in with doubles. The brightest part of the night might have been the Cowboy batters only striking out three times. The Cowboys take the field next when they travel to Perry Tuesday, March 5th for a 7:00pm contest against the Taylor County Bulldogs.

Cowboys Basketball Hosts Pack The Gym Friday Afternoon

Submitted by MCHS Head Varsity Basketball Coach Eddie Richie
For those of you not traveling to Ocala, MCHS Basketball will host its first Pack-the-Gym Friday, December 2nd against visiting Brooks County (GA). JV Girls start at 3:30. JV boys play after them, followed by Varsity Girls then Varsity Boys wrap the night up.

Saturday, December 3rd, Madison will host Hamilton County for our 2nd Pack-the-Gym of the year. These games are always entertaining. Games start at 3:30 with the same order listed above.

One of the challenges to coaching basketball at a small football school is that we share a lot of athletes. This year, we are supporting 2/3 of our varsity basketball team out on the football field as they make their run to State. The ones playing basketball now are working extra hard and deserve a lot of credit. Even some JV players, mostly freshman, are filling in on varsity and getting some good experience.

Madison To Play State Semifinals Against Trinity Catholic

By Jacob Bembry
Greene Publishing, Inc.
One step away from the state championship, the Madison County High School Cowboys play the Trinity Catholic Celtics in Ocala on Friday evening, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m.
The Celtics have a very good offense with a senior running back named Austin McClellan who has 1,104 rushing yards on 159 carries with 12 touchdowns. McClellan also has 15 catches for 203 yards and one touchdown.
Junior fullback Demonta Blunt does more than block in the backfield. He has amassed 846 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on 111 carries. He has also caught the ball 13 times for 191 yards.
The receiving corps is led by wide receiver Camerhon Guyton, a junior, who has 20 catches for 303 yards and three touchdowns.
A weak chink in Trinity’s armor maybe sophomore quarterback Reid Carlton. While Reid has a big arm, he hasn’t fully digested Trinity Catholic’s playbook yet. This has forced the Celtics to become a run-first team for the first time in seven years.
The Celtics’ last four quarterbacks all found collegiate homes at the University of Florida, Purdue, Miami and Valdosta State.
Carlton has amassed 1,182 yards passing with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
On defense, the Celtics’ linebacker Will Cothron (82 tackles) will not play in the game due to a shoulder injury suffered in last week’s playoff game.
Linebacker Marquel Holmes is a senor with 67 tackles and two interceptions.
Lorenzo Washington is a senior free safety, who has 65 tackles and five interceptions including three returned for touchdowns.
The defensive line is led by Jon General, a senior defensive end with 61 tackles and 14.5 sacks, and Cole Rogers, a senior defensive tackle, with 45 tackles and eight sacks.
The Trinity Catholic coach has a name familiar to college football fans. He is a former University of Florida starting quarterback, John Brantley, and his son, John, was the starting Gator quarterback this year.
Trinity Catholic posted a 14-0 record and won the State 2B championship last year before moving up to Class 3A. This year, they have not been as fortunate, compiling a 7-4 record. One opponent the Cowboys and Celtics have in common is the Gainesville High Purple Hurricanes. Trinity lost to them 29-6, while Madison beat them in Gainesville 21-17.
Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Catholic’s stadium, located at 2600 SW 42Nd St. in Ocala.
