Two Killed In Crash Early Friday Morning

Two people were killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 10, east of the US 221 exit early Friday morning, April 27.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Hector G. Garcia, 67, of Ruskin, was eastbound on I-10 when for an unknown reason, the 1997 Chevrolet Suburban he was driving veered off the roadway onto the south shoulder and began rotating clockwise.
While rotating on the south shoulder, the Suburban overturned several times and then came to rest upright in the tree line on the south shoulder.
Garcia was critically injured in the crash and was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Garcia’s passengers, Manuel Valdez, 56, and Felicitas Valdez, 50, both of Frostproof, were killed in the crash.
Seatbelt usage for the passengers is pending further investigation.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Madison County EMS, Madison Fire and Rescue and the Greenville Volunteer Fire Department assisted FHP at the scene.
FHP Trooper Berry Crews was the crash investigator. FHP Cpl. Carlton Yarborough was the homicide investigator.

SUV Strikes Tree

The back draft from a semi reportedly caused a woman to lose control of her 2003 Ford Explorer Sunday morning, Feb. 6. She and her passenger were injured in the wreck.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Phyllis Kelley Harmon, 62, of Panama City was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in the inside lane, when she lost control of the SUV, causing it to rotate counterclockwise.
The SUV continued rotating counterclockwise, crossing through the westbound outside and emergency lanes. It then continued rotating clockwise, causing the left side of the SUV to strike a tree.
Harmon’s vehicle came to a final rest against a tree, facing eastbound, north of Interstate 10.
The driver and her passenger, Jack Allen Harmon, 61, of Panama City Beach, were treated at the scene by Madison County EMS for minor injuries.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
FHP Trooper J.M. Beauford was the investigating officer.

Man Injured In One-Vehicle Wreck

A 70-year-old man was injured in a one-vehicle accident on Sunday, Feb. 6, after he reportedly swerved to miss hitting a small animal, which came on the roadway.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, at approximately 11:10 a.m., Johnny W. Heady, 70, of Arcadia, was westbound on Interstate 10, between the 237 and 236 mile markers, in the outside lane. Heady told officers that, without warning, a small animal came onto the roadway, into the path of Heady’s 2005 Mercury.
Heady swerved to miss the animal and lost control of his car.
The Mercury went off the roadway, out of control backwards traveling westbound.
The car continued out of control, striking a concrete culvert barrier and then a large pine tree.
The car overturned on its right side after striking the tree.
Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy David Myers and Greenville Fire and Rescue assisted FHP at the traffic crash scene.
Heady refused transport to a medical facility.
FHP Trooper Tom Roderick was the investigating officer.
Shooting Death

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Saturday morning, Jan. 8, at approximately 9:40 a.m., a Madison County Sheriff’s Office Deputy and a Florida State Trooper were involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect.
Both Officers were in the process of checking on a subject that was illegally camping on the side of an entrance ramp to Interstate 10 in Madison County. The suspect pointed a shotgun at the deputy, which resulted in return fire from the Officers. The suspect was killed during the incident.
In accordance with Sheriff’s Office policy and procedure, the investigation of the incident was then turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Third Circuit State Attorney’s Office. The investigation is currently ongoing, however preliminary investigation revealed that the officers involved responded appropriately to the threat.
Sheriff Stewart concludes with his gratitude that neither officer was injured in the incident and additional information will be released pending the completed investigation.
