The 2013 Cowboy baseball season started last week at Boot Hill, and the hosts for the Cowboy Challenge were certainly ready to play ball. Taylor Howell picked up the pitching victory in Thursdays contest allowing only 3 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts over four innings, and Zack Money picked up the victory Friday going four innings while allowing 1 hit, 3 free passes and striking out 9. Freshman, Alex Tyson, got the first save of his young career Friday pitching a strong inning to end the game.

Leading the way in hits were Patrick Bowen, Taylor Howell and Akevious Williams with four hits each including 3 doubles for Patrick. Cowboys Lose Tight District Contest

Submitted by Wayne Money
On a night with so much at stake, the Cowboy varsity baseball team lost a tight battle to District foe Florida High 5 to 4 leaving the team in third place for the upcoming Region 4A District 2 tournament. It was a battle from the beginning as the Cowboys fell behind early 2 to 0 only to tie it up in the 4th inning. In the fifth, the Seminoles plated 3 more runs to go up 5 to 2, and again the Cowboys battled back with 2 of their own in the sixth inning making it 5 to 4. The Cowboys had their chance in the bottom of the seventh, but they just couldn’t plate the run needed to force extra innings. For the game, the Cowboys had just three free passes and four hits – two doubles and two singles. Zack Money was strapped with the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings.. striking out six and allowing three earned runs.

The Cowboys regular season is down to the four home games listed below before they head to the District tournament held at Florida High beginning April 23rd, so come on out and support your COWBOYS.

Smokin Hot Bats and Smoked Chicken for the Sponsors

The Cowboy varsity baseball team played host to Melody Christian Academy from Live Oak this Saturday afternoon and the bats continued to be hot. The Cowboys had 13 hits including 3 doubles and a home run. As was the case Thursday night in Tallahassee, the Cowboys run ruled their opponent by a score of 12 to 2 leaving their season record at 7 wins and 4 losses, and 2 and 2 in district play. Taylor Howell picked up the victory with four innings of two hit ball, and Jarrod Burns relieved for a scoreless and final inning. This was a Saturday game scheduled specifically to pay tribute to our sponsors, and as Coach Barrs stated, “what a turnout”. Approximately sixty wonderful folks were provided with an appreciation dinner, some great baseball, and a big thank from all the Cowboy players, coaches and parents.

On the night, Patrick Bowen led the way going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and 2 RBI’s. Aaron Brown, Heath Carroll, Jake Latner and DJ Mcknight added two hits each including a home run by Aaron and a double by Jake. Also on the night, Jarrod Burns provided a pinch hit 2 RBI double, and Taylor Howell had an RBI single.

The Cowboys take the field next when they travel to Monticello, Monday, March 12th for a 4:30pm contest against the Aucilla Christian Warriors then it’s back home for a District contest Tuesday, March 13th at 7:00pm against the Godby Cougars from Tallahassee. This will be a big game in deciding who takes control of the 4A District 2 Baseball Standings.

Cowboys Lose Another Close Game

The nine inning game played Tuesday night wasn’t pretty defensively, but it was close. The Cowboys dropped their second district game of the season to the Taylor County Bulldogs 9 to 8 leaving their season record at 5 wins and 4 losses. The game started off nicely enough with the Cowboys jumping out to an early 4 to 0 lead in the second inning, but miscues in the field allowed the Bulldogs back into the game. The Cowboys were still leading 8 to 5 going into the bottom of the seventh; however, the Bulldogs rallied for 3 runs to knot the score at 8. After a scoreless inning by both teams, the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Overall on the night, the Cowboys committed six errors which allowed for four unearned runs.

As a team, the Cowboys could only muster seven hits along with seven free passes. Jake Latner led the way with three hits and two RBI’s, and Heath Carroll came through with two hits. Aaron Brown added two RBI’s, and Adam Odiorne had two of the seven free passes. Zack Money pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out eleven while walking only two. The Cowboys take the field next when they travel to Tallahassee Thursday, March 7th for a 7:30pm contest against the Florida High Seminoles.

Road Trip Misery For Cowboys

Submitted by Wayne Money
On Wednesday night, the Cowboy baseball squad faced off against the Godby Cougars of Tallahassee in the first district game of the season, and the Godby pitcher was not a welcoming host. The Cougars blanked the Cowboys 4 to 0 leaving the Cowboys with a season record of 4 wins and 3 losses. Zack Money was strapped with the loss after allowing four hits and five free passes; however, pitcher Aaron Brown provided hope after relieving and shutting down the Cougars for 2.1 innings. The Cowboys had opportunities to push runs across, but just could never break through.

As a team, the Cowboys had only five hits and one free pass while striking out thirteen times. Patrick Bowen and Jarrod Burns led the way with two singles each, and Zack Money pitched in with a double. This is just one loss and must be forgotten quickly as the Cowboys take the field again tonight at 7 p.m. as hosts against the East Gadsden Jaguars.

Come support the Cowboys as they try and even their record in this all important district game.

Homeruns and Heartbreak for Cowboys

On a cloudy night in Georgia, not even three home runs – two by Aaron Brown and one mammoth shot by DJ McKnight could power the Cowboys to victory against the Thomasville Bulldogs in the Valdosta Invitational tournament. Madison lost for the first time this season by a score of 8 – 7, but there was a lot a fight demonstrated. Trailing 6 to 3 in the seventh inning the Cowboys scored three runs to force extra innings. After each team scored a run in the ninth, the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the bottom of the tenth to hand the Cowboys their first defeat. As a team, the Cowboys racked up nine hits and nine free passes; however, they also had sixteen strikeouts and six errors in the loss. Aaron Brown had 3 RBI’s… Heath Carroll, Zack Money, DJ McKnight, and Aaron contributed 2 hits each, and for the third time this season Jarrod Burns was hit by pitch to reach base.

The Cowboys will also play a tournament game Saturday, February 25 at 4:00pm against the Houston County Bears.

Madison County Cowboys Attend FCA Camp

cowboys

The Madison County Cowboy football team and coaches just returned from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Team Camp Three.  Coach Coe wanted to say thank you to all who gave their hard earned money to send the team to FCA camp.

The annual camp is hosted by Marianna High School and the teams are housed at the Blue Spring Assembly in Marianna. The Cowboys joined Pace High School of Pensacola area and Branford High from Suwannee County for Camp Three. Jefferson County, Marianna High School and Frankie Carroll’s Pelham, Georgia, team made up Camp One. Taylor County, Chipley, Wakulla and Jay made up Camp Two.

The camp began at 10 a.m. each day with team practices and live competition, runs for two hours each morning and afternoon. The players are in “shells,” which is everything but lower pads. The players love it because they have been doing passing leagues in shorts and are anxious for some live contact.   The coaches love this 11 on 11 live format because kick-off is only four weeks away for most and they get a good look against live competition.

The FCA staff loves it because we have the privilege of sharing the message of Christ with the all the teams.  The coaches are challenged in their personal faith and encouraged to be a positive influence for their communities. Statistically, eight out of 10 teenagers in America do not attend any church, but 100% of their team attended team camp.

From July 22-31, 515 coaches and athletes attended these three camps and 172 athletes made personal commitments for Christ. “There seemed to be a real hunger for direction and truth in the lives of the students and coaches this year. There is so much instability in our culture, students are looking for foundational truth and relationships they can build their lives on,” said Steve McHargue, FCA Area Representative.

Many thanks to everyone who gave to make this summer camp season a record success.

Madison County High’s Class Of ’81 “Original Cowboys” Planning Reunion

By Lynette Norris
Greene Publishing, Inc.
They call themselves “The Original Cowboys,” that Class of 1981, that was the first to graduate from Madison County High School after it re-opened in its present location and changed its mascot from “cougar” to “cowboy.”
And one of those Original Cowboys, Jesse Solomon, went on to become a Dallas Cowboy.  Solomon played football for both Madison High and Florida State University, and from 1986 to 1994, he also played for several NFL teams, including the Minnesota Vikings and the Miami Dolphins.
Now, he is busy organizing a 30-Year Class Reunion for his fellow MCHS alumni for the weekend of June 10,11 and 12.
It’s a fun-filled weekend with something for everyone.  Friday, June 10, two busloads full of the first 100 classmates to register, will leave Madison County for Jacksonville, where they will embark on a casino/dinner cruise.  The deadline to register for the cruise is June 1, and those who are interested should register soon.  Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Saturday is Family Day, with a cookout and softball games, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Madison County High School.  That evening there will be a dinner at the Divine Events off the Valdosta Highway (Hwy 145).
Sunday will round off the weekend with church services at the MCHS auditorium, led by Tom Page and several classmates who have gone into the ministry since graduation.
For more information, about the activities, or registering for the cruise, contact Jesse Solomon at (850) 408 2342.

Cowboys Varsity Baseball To Honor Five At Senior Night

The Madison County Cowboys baseball team will honor five senior ball players Thursday evening at 5:00.  Kelvin Singletary, Marterrius McDaniel, Laterrian McDaniel, Tavarus Dennis, and Jakelby Johnson will play their final home game as the Cowboys host the Leon High School Lions.
Singletary will conclude a stellar career at MCHS.  Considered a top prospect, Singletary has already signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Northwest Florida State College.  He has turned in dominant performances as a hard-throwing pitcher and as a hitter with power and speed.
Marterrius McDaniel has logged time as an outfielder, second baseman, and pitcher for the Cowboys.  Once on base, he is a threat to steal bases.  Laterrian McDaniel has been a starting middle infielder for the Cowboys for most of the season.  He has wielded a strong bat in the top portion of the Cowboy lineup, contributing several clutch hits throughout the season.  Johnson has provided solid play during his starts at first base.  Dennis has seen limited playing time, but provides leadership to the Cowboy roster.
The players will be honored prior to the start of the game with the Lions at Boot Hill.  Although it will be their final home game, these seniors will lead the Cowboys into district tournament play on Tuesday, April 26th, against the Raiders of Rickards High School.

Update from Coach Richie

By Coach Eddie Richie, MCHS Head Varsity Basketball Coach
Well, its official. Jv basketball season is officially over. Coach Demps worked a masterpiece. Their only defeat was @ Godby where they only had a roster of 7 players. So, technically, this team is undefeated! They defeated Baker County last night to finish the season 19-1, surpassing the previous best record of 16-4 for JV basketball. The JV roster is as follows below. The ones with the * have been moved up to varsity for the final game of the regular season and district play. Please congratulate them when you see them. It was hard work. This record was not handed to them. It started in the summer where some played against varsity opponents in camps and summer leagues. Then, they came and practiced with varsity and played against varsity opponents until football season was over. They did all the same things varsity has done in practice and in games. Many will be ready for varsity next season. As a matter of fact, as of now there will only be one senior on next years team. The rest will be together for 2 years. Coach Demps has been true blessing in getting the players ready for varsity basketball and helping them grow into productive young men.

On another positive note, when report cards came out, every single player, both on JV and Varsity was eligible to continue the season and be involved in Spring Sports, with many making above a 3.0 on their 9 weeks grades. We are extremely proud of their hand work on and off the court.

Varsity won their final road game of the season last night in Baker County. That moves our record to 7-6 since the break with one left to play. We have won 3 of our last 4 with our final game against Melody Christian tomorrow at 7pm. Cowboys defeated Melody 88-36 in our first meeting at their place. This will be our first game with our district roster. Our district roster is different due to injuries and JV players moving up. Here are the 15 players that going to strive for a District Title starting next Friday @ 7:30 vs. East Gadsden at the MCHS Gym.
