Tri County Women’s Conference 2011

Womens

You will not want to miss this event!  If you are hurting, disconnected or unfulfilled, join other sisters who feel the same way.  If you desire to make a difference in your community, come and connect with us. This conference is for all abused women and those who want to help them.

The primary focus of the Tri County Women’s Conference is emotional healing. Discover your  true value and worth; join in establishing a sisterhood where women stand alongside other women for encouragement and acceptance; help yourself and others grow prosperously, develop confidence and set goals for the future.

“In this first event, we want to set the pace and start a chain reaction that will ignite the world,” says conference developer, Gloria Miller. The inspiration for the event primarily came from Miller’s own experience in volunteering at Another Way’s shelter for women. She saw women leave the shelter and return to their abusers, repeating the cycle of abuse again and again.  This experience, coupled with the knowledge gained through her own personal struggles with emotional trauma, sparked her desire to help. Then a friend shared the belief that “soul ties” with the abuser must be broken in order for the abused to be truly free. This fired Miller’s inspiration to be the missing link to those in need.

“In time to come, we want to become a connecting hub for churches and other organizations that help with the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of women,” she says. “Many organizations already exist, but because they are not readily known to the churches and the public as a whole, the help they offer is not being utilized.”

Miller’s philosophy is that one group cannot fix the problem of widespread emotional hurt among women.  By connecting organizations together through the Conference, individuals can be a resource in helping others. “As we do this, we can become who we are and boldly go where no woman has gone before,“ Miller says. This, in turn, will light a torch that can be passed to the next generation of women who then will pass it along to others.

NFCC Asks For Communities Help In Preparing New Strategic Plan

By Kristin Finney
Greene Publishing, Inc.

North Florida Community College has begun preparing their new strategic process for the coming months. This plan outlines NFCC’s process for determining the strategies they will use in order to advance the college in the future.

The staff at NFCC request that everyone, whether they are staff, students or simply community members to please take part in this survey to gather information to help them begin the new strategic plan. The community plays a huge role in the daily activities at NFCC and the community’s feedback is essential to the success of this plan. The survey can be found at https:// www.surveymonkey.com/s/52RR5W3.

Currently the plan has seven goals and 26 activities that will help the college meet these goals. The introduction to the 2007-2010 plan states that, “Strategic planning at North Florida Community College is an ongoing process meant to provide a framework for planning by divisions, departments, and individuals. The plan consists of seven goals and 26 objectives that are interrelated and tied to the College’s mission. These goals and objectives were developed to provide the foundation for a three-year planning cycle.”

The current Vision provided in the outline states, “Our vision for North Florida Community College is to be a vibrant educational community serving rural North Florida, including the counties of Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee and Taylor, and beyond. We will offer a student-centered faculty and staff who embrace diversity in a friendly and inclusive learning environment. The college will provide technologically advanced educational opportunities in response to the community’s need for quality, affordable, and accessible programs. The College will partner with business, industry, community and educational institutions to promote the economic and community development of our region.”

The current Mission reads, “North Florida Community College provides quality teaching and learning opportunities for individual and community development in a changing society.” And their Motto is, “Our Mission: YOU.”

The 2007-2010 strategic plan also explains the opportunities that students have at NFCC. It explains, “North Florida Community College offers: Transferable college credit programs leading to the Associate in Arts Degree. Workforce development programs leading to the Associate in Science Degree or technical certificates for occupational skills and employment. Access to baccalaureate degree programs through partnerships with colleges and universities. Basic literacy and adult general education leading to the GED. Personal, professional and academic development opportunities through credit and non-credit programs. Partnerships with business, industry, government and other institutions to promote  economic development and provide retraining opportunities for the district’s  workforce. Support services to assist students in making educational, vocational and personal decisions. Cultural, recreational and enrichment opportunities for students and residents of the  community.”

FCCLA Helps Migrant Workers

By Aaron Brown
Hello there, my name is Aaron Brown, and my two friends, Cammie Frakes and Taylor Money, and I, are working on a project for our school’s FCCLA organization. When April 27th rolls around, we will be competing against schools all across the state of Florida for the best community service project. As it is with any community project, it cannot be done without, well, the community, which is you. So jump on “Team CAT” (Cammie, Aaron, Taylor) and lend us your support.
In this town there are many migrant workers who don’t make enough money to adequately clothe their children. When the idea to supply them with clothes came up as an FCCLA event to compete in at state, we were immediately drawn to the idea.
So, we accepted the challenge and got to work. By the end of June, our goal is to make 100 dresses and 100 pairs of shorts, for the migrant workers families. We have already realized that it is going to take a lot of time and hard work, but it will all be worth it when we see the faces of satisfaction when the families realize their children have proper and clean clothes to wear.
“How can I help?” Great question. You can help in a number of ways starting with donating old clothes. The clothes have to be able to fit children from ages 0 to 12 and need to be in decent, wearable condition.  Once you have them gathered up, you can drop them off at a Junior Auxiliary meeting, Madison County High School, or your child’s day care center.  If you don’t have old clothes, you can donate resources that we use to create the dresses and shorts like fabric, ribbon, thread, or elastic. Or, if you don’t have the resources you can just come to the high school and join us, seriously. Even if you’re pushed for time you can help just by giving us a donation, they will all be greatly appreciated. This is a community project and we can’t do it without the communities’ support. There are people in need and we all have the opportunity to help. So let’s do this together!

Extension Service Offering Master Gardener Program

Do you experience envy of a beautifully manicured and landscaped lawn?  Ever wish you had a green thumb in efforts to grow your own fruits and vegetables?  Would you like to make a difference in your community?  Do you like teaching/helping  others or just wish to be more involved in the community?
Are you an experienced gardener and just want to nurture your keen interest in horticulture?  Maybe you just like being outside.
If any of these apply to you, then you may be interested in the Florida Master Gardener  program offered  by the Madison County Extension Service.
Members of the Master Gardener program are provided with a minimum of fifty hours of in-depth horticultural training in a variety of topics.
In return, graduates give at least seventy-five volunteer hours helping the local Extension program.
Master Gardener volunteers help the county Extension office in many ways: answering garden related phone calls from homeowners, staffing plant clinics, working with 4-H youth, helping with school gardens, and many others.
For more information, contact Covey Washington or Heidi Waller at (850) 973-4138 for an application.  The deadline for receiving applications is February 25.
