Cowboys Basketball Hosts Pack The Gym Friday Afternoon

Submitted by MCHS Head Varsity Basketball Coach Eddie Richie
For those of you not traveling to Ocala, MCHS Basketball will host its first Pack-the-Gym Friday, December 2nd against visiting Brooks County (GA). JV Girls start at 3:30. JV boys play after them, followed by Varsity Girls then Varsity Boys wrap the night up.

Saturday, December 3rd, Madison will host Hamilton County for our 2nd Pack-the-Gym of the year. These games are always entertaining. Games start at 3:30 with the same order listed above.

One of the challenges to coaching basketball at a small football school is that we share a lot of athletes. This year, we are supporting 2/3 of our varsity basketball team out on the football field as they make their run to State. The ones playing basketball now are working extra hard and deserve a lot of credit. Even some JV players, mostly freshman, are filling in on varsity and getting some good experience.

Basketball Tournament Being Held To Help 17-Year-Old Needing Kidney Transplant

Marcus Moore, Jr.

By Jacob Bembry
Greene Publishing, Inc.

Family and friends of Marcus Moore, Jr. will be hosting a basketball tournament for the 17-year-old who suffers from kidney disease.

“I was recently diagnosed with renal kidney disease,” Moore said. “Before this disease, I was a typical teenage boy. I played football for the Madison County Cowboys, which I love, and basketball with my friends and cousins.”

When he found out about the disease, he was devastated.
“I felt like my life was over,” Moore said. “I learned that I would have to be on dialysis for the rest of my life and I thought I didn’t have anything to live for anymore.”

Moore lost 90 percent of his kidney function and has to go to dialysis three times a week.
“I didn’t think I had the strength to go through this at such a young age,” he said. “I just wanted my life back.”

Moore drew power from a higher source, however.
“I realized shortly after that, I needed to call on God in order to be that typical teenager and play sports once again,” he said, “but most importantly, to be healthy and live a long life.”

For Moore to have a kidney transplant, it will be costly and he and his family are asking for donations to help with the medical expenses. Family and friends have many events planned to raise money for the transplant. The first will be on Saturday, June 25, as a basketball tournament will be held at North Florida Community College. Registration for teams begins at 9:30 a.m. with tip-off for the first game at 10 a.m.

A prize will be given to the winners of the tournament.
Donations can also be made to a special fund set up at Madison County Community Bank for Marcus Moore, Jr.

“I am also asking you to keep my family and I in your prayers with the hope that we continue to have strength throughout our journey. Thank you and may God bless you,” Moore said.
Marcus Moore, Jr. is the son of Nyra and Marcus Moore, Sr.

Basketball Tournament Fundraiser Is A Success

The Brotherhood of Sanctuary of Praise hosted a church fundraiser basketball tournament on April 9.
The tournament was truly a success because of donations and participation.
The 305 Boys from Madison, who have been together since 1996, and have amassed a record of 112 wins and 12 losses, finished first.
The members of 305 are Coach Chris Neal, Coach Marcus Hawkins, Coach Eddie Richie, Brian Peacock, Tobe Cain, Kevin Mattair, Antonio Johnson and “Big Man” Marcus Brinson.
The Wildcats from Monticello came in second place.
The championship game was very close with the Wildcats coming up short 49-47 to one of the best teams in the Big Bend.
The 305 team took their seventh championship back to their hometown.
The 305 is a team of men who go to different tournaments and summer programs showing off their talent. The community thanks these great men for showing that good men can grow up to be great men, traveling around playing basketball for great causes, like the Sanctuary of Praise fundraiser.
Madison County is truly blessed to have such a positive influence as the 305 basketball team in our community. “We all can make a difference if we all work together,” they say.
A special thank you goes out to Morris Bell and Louis Dawkins, for refereeing 12 games back-to-back, Marion Copeland for donating her Saturday to run the concession stand; and Odell Livingston for patrolling the area, ensuring the safety of the people.
The Sanctuary of Praise would also like to thank all the teams and fans for being part of a great cause.

Update from Coach Richie

By Coach Eddie Richie, MCHS Head Varsity Basketball Coach
Well, its official. Jv basketball season is officially over. Coach Demps worked a masterpiece. Their only defeat was @ Godby where they only had a roster of 7 players. So, technically, this team is undefeated! They defeated Baker County last night to finish the season 19-1, surpassing the previous best record of 16-4 for JV basketball. The JV roster is as follows below. The ones with the * have been moved up to varsity for the final game of the regular season and district play. Please congratulate them when you see them. It was hard work. This record was not handed to them. It started in the summer where some played against varsity opponents in camps and summer leagues. Then, they came and practiced with varsity and played against varsity opponents until football season was over. They did all the same things varsity has done in practice and in games. Many will be ready for varsity next season. As a matter of fact, as of now there will only be one senior on next years team. The rest will be together for 2 years. Coach Demps has been true blessing in getting the players ready for varsity basketball and helping them grow into productive young men.

Seth Molnar
Garrett Holman
Brice Hamilton *

Trey Jonas

On another positive note, when report cards came out, every single player, both on JV and Varsity was eligible to continue the season and be involved in Spring Sports, with many making above a 3.0 on their 9 weeks grades. We are extremely proud of their hand work on and off the court.

Varsity won their final road game of the season last night in Baker County. That moves our record to 7-6 since the break with one left to play. We have won 3 of our last 4 with our final game against Melody Christian tomorrow at 7pm. Cowboys defeated Melody 88-36 in our first meeting at their place. This will be our first game with our district roster. Our district roster is different due to injuries and JV players moving up. Here are the 15 players that going to strive for a District Title starting next Friday @ 7:30 vs. East Gadsden at the MCHS Gym.

MCHS Basketball Update

By Madison County High Head Varsity Basketball Coach Eddie Richie
Coach’s Note: Districts start Wednesday Feb. 9th. Semi-Finals Feb. 11th and Championship Feb 12.

What a night!!! Let me start by congratulating the JV boys basketball team going UNDEFEATED at HOME!! Wow, what a season. with only one senior for next year, this group we have coming back should be strong the next 2 years!! Jv has one more contest vs. Baker County on Tuesday, Feb. 1st. If they win, they will finish their season 19-1, best record E-V-E-R. Live Oak dind’t make it easy Saturday. Live Oak almost scored 50 points in the first half!! A lot of it was them making some great shots, but Coach Demps knew that his defense had something to do with that. He gave a motivating speech at half time and Live Oak went on to only score 19 in the 2nd half as the JV Cowboys came all the way back from more than 10 down to win!!

The varsity boys game was just as entertaining, but with a lot less offense. This game was controlled by defense throughout and ended that way as well. Varsity started off hot, sprinting out to a 10 – 0 lead. That lead slowly dwindled as they found themselves up only 1 at half. It was back and forth through out the 3rd, Cowboys held a 2 point lead going into the 4th quarter. They maintained that lead but it wasn’t easy. The score was tied with 20 seconds left. The cowboys ran a play to perfection and got Tre Arnold a wide open 12 foot shot from the baseline. He hit like it was nothing. The awesome thing about that is there was so much redemption in that shot. Tre got rebound with 3 seconds left against East Gadsden and missed the game tying shot as time ran out. I always tell the players that you will get a 2nd chance and you have to be ready. Tre was ready. Live Oak called a time out with less than 5 seconds left to set up a play. The Cowboys defensive unit was already at the scorers table ready to check in because they knew it was their time to step up. As Live Oak’s leading scorer dribbled down the court, senior Bryan “Busta” Williams poked the ball away, we recovered and the celebration began. What a great night for the seniors!!

The senior festivities went well. The house was packed. All the seniors got minutes, including our special senior Nicko Thomas who did not make the team this year, but because he has been our film man and we love him so much, he got to dress tonight and take part in Senior night. Also, there was touching moment for Bryan Williams. His family had to work so he had no escort. All the seniors took part in escorting him to center court. I am blessed to be able to coach a team with that much character.

Update On MCHS Cowboys Basketball

By Eddie Richie, Head Varsity Basketball Coach
Madison County High School
As of Jan. 20, Madison is currently 7-11. The record does not indicate the way we are playing recently. We have won two of our last three games. Our last loss was at home to East Gadsden 65-63.
Let me give you all an analogy: East Gadsden is to basketball as Madison County is to football. We could have and should have won that game.
We missed a few “gimmees” and free throws that would have gave us a bigger lead in the final minutes. It was an intense game that left the players heartbroken in the end. As a coach, there is no such thing a “good loss,” but this one wasn’t exactly bad. We learned that we can play with one of the best teams in the state, especially in 3A, and they are in our district. The travesty of the game, besides the loss, was there was only about 100 people there to see real good basketball.
On another exciting note, Madison’s JV boys team has a record of 13-1 — clearly one of the best records, if not the best record for JV boys thus far. They still have six more games, and they have won all 13 in a row after dropping the first game to Godby before they had all the players from football. I’m excited to see how long they keep it going. The future of Madison County basketball looks bright, thanks to Head JV Coach Allen Demps. In only his second year of coaching, he has done extremely well, not only preparing the players for their games, but preparing them for varsity level competition. He is a huge asset to the program and a lot of our success is because of his hard work and dedication.
