Cowboys Winning Again

Submitted by Wayne Money

After a disappointing two game road stretch where the Varsity Cowboys lost to Suwannee, FL 4 to 3 and Ringgold, GA 16 to 6 , the Cowboy’s baseball team is back at their winning ways. The team traveled to Tallahassee Thursday for a Class 4A Distract 2 contest against the Godby Cougars and came home with a decisive 9 to 1 victory. As a team, the Cowboys had six hits, ten free passes and five RBI’s. With the win, their season record now stands at 3 wins against 2 losses, with a district record of 1 win and 0 losses. Zack Money picked up his second win of the season pitching a complete game with 12 K’s, 3 free passes and 0 earned runs.

On this cold evening, DJ Mcknight led the way at the plate going 1 for 2 with his 3rd HR of the season driving in 3 runs while being intentionally walked twice. Patrick Bowen, Zack Money, Chad Oliver and Akevious Williams added hits, and Jake Latner and Chad Oliver each picked up an RBI. Two big time defensive plays were made in the outfield; one diving catch by Akevious playing in right field and one over the shoulder grab by DJ in center field. Also contributing were Wayne Driggers, Brandon Hammond and Drew Richardson with runs scored. More news worthy of mentioning is the Cowboys check in this week at number 6 in the Big Bend area rankings as voted by Next level baseball.

The Cowboys continue on a nine game road swing today at 4:00pm against Melody Christian Academy in Live Oak.

Cowboys Lose Tight District Contest

Submitted by Wayne Money
On a night with so much at stake, the Cowboy varsity baseball team lost a tight battle to District foe Florida High 5 to 4 leaving the team in third place for the upcoming Region 4A District 2 tournament. It was a battle from the beginning as the Cowboys fell behind early 2 to 0 only to tie it up in the 4th inning. In the fifth, the Seminoles plated 3 more runs to go up 5 to 2, and again the Cowboys battled back with 2 of their own in the sixth inning making it 5 to 4. The Cowboys had their chance in the bottom of the seventh, but they just couldn’t plate the run needed to force extra innings. For the game, the Cowboys had just three free passes and four hits – two doubles and two singles. Zack Money was strapped with the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings.. striking out six and allowing three earned runs.

The Cowboys regular season is down to the four home games listed below before they head to the District tournament held at Florida High beginning April 23rd, so come on out and support your COWBOYS.

Cowboys Lose Another Close Game

The nine inning game played Tuesday night wasn’t pretty defensively, but it was close. The Cowboys dropped their second district game of the season to the Taylor County Bulldogs 9 to 8 leaving their season record at 5 wins and 4 losses. The game started off nicely enough with the Cowboys jumping out to an early 4 to 0 lead in the second inning, but miscues in the field allowed the Bulldogs back into the game. The Cowboys were still leading 8 to 5 going into the bottom of the seventh; however, the Bulldogs rallied for 3 runs to knot the score at 8. After a scoreless inning by both teams, the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Overall on the night, the Cowboys committed six errors which allowed for four unearned runs.

Cowboys Even District Record

Cowboys Even District Record

With a great crowd on hand Friday night , the varsity Cowboys evened their district record at one win and one loss with an 8 to 3 victory over the visiting Jaguars from East Gadsden. The Cowboys overall record now stands at 5 and 3 as they head into the middle part of the season which includes four district games in the next eleven days. Jarrod Burns picked up the victory pitching six strong innings while allowing only four base runners and striking out eleven.

As a team, the Cowboys notched ten hits and six free passes. Aaron Brown led the way with two hits including a homerun. Road Trip Misery For Cowboys

Submitted by Wayne Money
On Wednesday night, the Cowboy baseball squad faced off against the Godby Cougars of Tallahassee in the first district game of the season, and the Godby pitcher was not a welcoming host. The Cougars blanked the Cowboys 4 to 0 leaving the Cowboys with a season record of 4 wins and 3 losses. Zack Money was strapped with the loss after allowing four hits and five free passes; however, pitcher Aaron Brown provided hope after relieving and shutting down the Cougars for 2.1 innings. The Cowboys had opportunities to push runs across, but just could never break through.

As a team, the Cowboys had only five hits and one free pass while striking out thirteen times. Patrick Bowen and Jarrod Burns led the way with two singles each, and Zack Money pitched in with a double. This is just one loss and must be forgotten quickly as the Cowboys take the field again tonight at 7 p.m. as hosts against the East Gadsden Jaguars.

Come support the Cowboys as they try and even their record in this all important district game.

Nine Innings to Victory

Submitted by Wayne Money
It took nine innings Thursday night, but the Cowboys prevailed over the Berrien Rebels in the second round of the Valdosta Invitational Tournament. Madison improved its record to 3 and 1 with the 5 – 4 victory and play again Saturday, February 25 at 4:00pm against the Houston County Bears in the same Valdosta Tournament. The game was then dominated by pitching until the bottom of the ninth when the Cowboys pushed a run across for the well deserved victory.

Baseball Home Opener

Varsity Team

Football is over (excellent job Coach Coe), basketball has finished (great job coach Richie), so now it’s time for some baseball. Coach Barrs would like to invite all sports fans to come join the Varsity Cowboys for this Friday’s 6:00PM HOME OPENER as they play host to the visiting Trojans from Hamilton County. Looks to be a great year, as the Cowboys started their season on the road last week with a 23 to 4 win. Coach Barrs is extremely excited and believes this year’s group, (7 SR’s, 6 JR’s and 2 Soph’s), has the experience needed to take a leap forward from last year’s District Runner-up finish. So come join in on the excitement.
