Steve Wilson Bevan, Jr. gently passed away on Friday, December 9, 2011 after a brief illness.
Born on April 15, 1935, and raised in Madison, Florida, he graduated from Florida State University and moved to the bright lights of New York City, where he intended to become a star with the Metropolitan Opera, but ultimately where he was a research analyst for Eastern Airlines and a financial analyst on Wall Street. He lived in New York for 26 years before retiring and coming home to Madison in 1983.
He was a loyal member of the Rotary Club of Madison and faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Madison. His love of music, particularly opera, carried him through his life from voice lessons in Madison as a boy to his final moments listening to it. Growing up in Madison, he was an avid baseball player and fan.
In his later years, his love of college football, particularly the FSU Seminoles, kept him busy throughout the season as well as the year with game replays.
He is the last “Bevan” to live in Madison dating back to 1838, when William James Bevan came here from Bladen County, North Carolina, and is the descendent of five soldiers that served in the Confederate army.
He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Bevan Spirer, her husband Peter Spirer, and grandchildren Samuel Peter Spirer and Rachel Bevan Spirer of Los Angeles, California, and numerous cousins in Madison and other parts of the South.
Visitation is Sunday, December 11 from 3 to 5pm at Beggs Funeral Home in Madison Florida. Chapel service is on Monday, December 12 at 2pm at Beggs Chapel followed by a graveside service at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to be made in his memory to either the First United Methodist Church of Madison at P.O. Box 294, Madison, Florida 32341 or the Rotary Club of Madison at P.O. Box 745, Madison, FL 32341.
