After a disappointing display in our first home game against Maclay on the 29th that ended in a 60 – 31 loss, the Cowboy basketball team bounced back in their first 2 pack-the-gyms of the young season. They defeated Brooks County Friday and the rival Hamilton County on Saturday. The team got a huge boost from the fans on Saturday. The crowd was much larger than even I expected for an early season game. Being that we have 3 freshman and one senior who have never played in a pack-the-gym against anyone, let alone against a rival like Hamilton, you never know what to expect. The leadership of juniors Trey Johnson and Davontay Stephens set the pace. I can’t say enough about those two young men. They have grown up a lot and have put in lot of hard work this off-season. Sophomore Coddrick Griffin stepped up and had a monster game Saturday (21 points, 12 rebounds). Freshman Ivan Johnson stepped up as well hitting big shots and handling the ball during crucial times in both wins. First year player, senior Deontay Jones, found his shot again Saturday and was all over the court on both ends. Freshman CJ Feadand Ladarious (Bump) Robinson are starting to find their groove handling the ball. They have had more responsibilityput on them than they are ready for, but they have embraced the challenge and have gotten better every game. The team played together, played hard, and played with passion. Most of all, they had fun. I couldn’t be more proud of where we are right now.
The JV team is 3-1 and remain undefeated at home this year and last. Most of the team is either new, or new to the court. Coach Allen Demps has done an outstanding job getting these young men ready. Freshmen Javon Redding, Jaylon Hazzard and Trey Livingston are learnig theii roles and stepping up nicely. Kelvontray Jonas, Joc Blackshear and Seth Molnar are all sophomores who are getting used to the increased playing time and the importance of their roles on the team. New player Shayon Davis is coming into his own and stepped in big this weekend. The early season most improved player has to Javen Butler. He is really learning his role and had become a good rebounder and defender.
This week, boys basketball only has 1 game, but its a big one. Friday all four teams travel to Taylor County for our first district game of the year. Taylor will have their whole roster, as did all the other teams we are playing against, but both our JV and Varsity teams are still playing short-handed. So the coaching staff will be asking our young team to step up, just like they did this past weekend, and get our first district win of the year. So, for those of you heading to Orlando Friday night to cheer on the Cowboy football team, take the scenic route and stop by Taylor County Gym on your way to cheer on a hard working group of young men and women. Thanks for all your support!! Good luck to the Cowboys going state!!
