The Madison County High School Cowboys went into the game against Gainesville High ranked number two in the state in Class 2A football. The Gainesville High Purple Hurricanes went into the game ranked number 10 in the state in Class 6A football. When the dust had cleared, the Cowboys stood victorious, racking up a 21-17 victory. Adding to the sweetness of the victory for MCHS was the fact that it was Gainesville High’s homecoming game.
The vaunted Cowboys’ rushing attack was held in check by the Purple Hurricanes for part of the game but the Gainesville defense could not prevent it from scoring three touchdowns.
Tommie Young led the ground game, as he churned out 121 yards on 20 carries. He also did a superb job blocking and had a huge third down catch for 12 yards. It was quite a birthday for Young. Young was chosen offensive player of the week.
Deonshay Wells rushed 23 times for 92 yards. Wells also ran back a kickoff return for a 98-yard touchdown. He also made a crucial first down saving tackle late in the game. He was chosen all round player of the week.
Quarterback D.J. McKnight had one touchdown on a run. He rushed four times for six yards.
Deontaye Oliver ran one time for three yards.
Keon Bruton’s one rush netted zero yards.
McKnight threw five passes and had one completion to Tommie Young, which was good for 12 yards.
Kicker Zach Money converted all three of his extra point tries.
Charles Brown was named the special teams player of the game as he had a fantastic game at long snapper. He also had a massive tackle on the punt return team and graded out at 90 percent at wide receiver.
Eddrick Williams, the smallest player on the field, did an impressive job playing defensive end against 300-pounders from Gainesville. He had nine tackles (including three for loss) and got his first sack of the year. Williams’ play earned him the honor of being defensive player of the week.
The Cowboys return to action Friday night as they play for the district championship against the Florida High Seminoles in Tallahassee.
