Walk around town for any length of time and chances are you’ll come across a small oak tree or two dedicated to a member of the Madison Woman’s Club or Garden Club. In fact, 165 trees have been planted and dedicated since Willie Clare Copeland began the tradition in 1983, as a way to honor members of both clubs who had passed away the previous year. During the Oct. 3 joint meeting, the two clubs, along with family members, shared memories of the six ladies who were being honored with trees this year: Rachel Reichmann, Lauretta Bottomley, Marjorie Woodard, Jean Brandies, Ruby Ulm and Frances Sanders. Afterward, several members joined the family members visiting the trees around town.
