A man was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm on Sunday, Sept. 15. According to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office report, Sgt. Randy S. Jansch was dispatched to a location on SW Brookwood Street in reference to a physical disturbance and a male discharging a firearm. Upon Jansch’s arrival, he saw a small crowd, yelling that a man had discharged a firearm and someone else had been shot in the back of the head. They also stated there was a black baseball cap with a bullet hole in it. Jansch made contact with the victim and observed that the victim was bleeding from a small area on the back of his head. Jansch had Madison County EMS respond to the scene to check the victim’s injuries. Someone told Jansch that William “Willie” McKnight, 32, had come on Brookwood, swinging a gun and saying that he would shoot anybody. The witness said that McKnight had pulled two guns and told the victim to get on the ground. Before the victim could get on the ground, McKnight fired the gun. Jansch obtained several other written statements from witnesses about McKnight brandishing a shotgun and a handgun and firing them. Deputies were notified of McKnight’s location. Deputy David Myers, CO Cpl. F. Korey and Deputy Odell Livingston responded to the address and made contact with McKnight. Deputies collected evidence and arrested McKnight and took him to the Madison County Jail, where, in addition to aggravated assault with a firearm, he was charged with possession of weapon by a convicted felon, discharge of a firearm in public and improper exhibition of a firearm.
