Despite a valiant effort by the Madison County High School Cowboys, the Gainesville High Hurricanes defeated the tough Cowboy squad by a score of 20-12. The game was played Friday, Sept. 13, in Gainesville at Citizens Field. The Cowboys got on the board first, near the end of the first half on a run by Eric Bright. Bright finished the game with 142 yards rushing on 25 carries and scored both of Madison’s touchdowns. The Cowboys offense had 147 yards in the first half and only allowed Gainesville 76 yards. On the game, the Cowboys had 19 first downs, compared to only five for the Hurricanes. Gainesville High’s kicking game seemed to be working better than Madison’s, as the Cowboys fumbled away two extra point conversions and missed two field goals. Meanwhile the Hurricanes’ punter, Alex Holloway, boomed a 56 yarder. The game was touch and go until the fourth quarter when Gainesville pulled ahead for a 20-12 lead and the win. With the Cowboys leading 12-7, the Hurricanes were pinned at their own six-yard line when quarterback Caelen Christian handed the ball off to Tony James, who ran 94 yards for a touchdown. Ahmad Ivey added a 91-yard touchdown to nail the coffin on the Cowboys’ chances. The Cowboys fell to 1-2 on the season. They play this Friday against the Trinity Christian Conquerors. The conquerors defeated Warner Christian from South Daytona Beach by a score of 32-8 to improve their record to 2-0 on the year. In junior varsity football action played Thursday, Sept. 12, the JV Cowboys battled the JV Bulldogs of Suwannee High to a 22-22 tie.
