June 10-11 Back to Nature Day Camp
4-H Agent, Becky Bennett and Madison County Agriculture/Natural Resources Agent, Dan Fenneman collaborated on a Back-To-Nature Day Camp in order to educate youth on Florida’s natural resources and preservation methods. “Preserving natural resources and becoming stewards of the land is an important topic,” states Bennett. Approximately 25 youth traveled to the Suwannee River State Park where they met County Forester, Justin Kania and toured the parks trails where they learned about north Florida’s native species of plants and animals, human’s influence on the local food web and the importance of Florida’s water sources. The following day the youth traveled to the University of Florida’s Fisheries Department where they learned about the importance of the research conducted there on Florida’s aquaculture. During their time at the department, the youth conducted experiments, identified native and invasive fish, plants and animals. The visit finished up with a fishing tournament that included a “Tasty Worm” Award for anyone catching a large mouth bass.
