Happenings At First Baptist ChurchAug 22nd, 2013 | By Jacob | Category: Church, Community News
One of the ordinances we observe in our church is that of Believer’s baptism. We were blessed to be able to baptize Emma Grace Newman, daughter of Isaac & Lori Newman. Emma Grace asked Jesus into her heart during Vacation Bible School. The Worship Choir sang “The Cross Before Me” as their special. It is based on Hebrews 12:2. Brother Gabe used as his text, John 15:9-13, for his sermon entitled “Abiding in Christ.” Verse 9. “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” The word abide means to remain, continue, dwell, endure or tarry. Don’t rush or, in today’s terms, don’t email or text me. So we are to abide/tarry in God’s love. Verse 10. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” How do we “abide” in this love as Jesus did? By keeping His commandments. We abide in His love when we obey His commandments. Verse 11, the key verse of this passage. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” The point of abiding in Him and keeping His commandments is JOY. Verse 12. “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” This is a summary statement. Abide = Obey = Love. Be careful not to minimize this love. How much did Jesus love you and me? He stretched out His arms of love and died for our sin. Verse 13. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” It’s hard to explain this verse. Jesus was probably speaking of denying oneself. We are to lay down our own agendas for the sake of others. This yoke of obedience will then make our joy complete.
