Serenity Acres Farm in Pinetta is one of two Florida farms that has been awarded an Animal Welfare Approved Good Husbandry Grant. The grant is intended to improve animal welfare and allow pasture-based farmers, such as Serenity Acres, to increase productivity for their operations and to facilitate the growth and success rate for all pasture-based systems. Documentation proves that when farm animals are managed on open pastures, challenges that may be present in industrial agriculture are non-existent. The results of pasture-based farming is, not only, more humane for the animals, but will lead to more nutritious and healthier products for the consumer. Animal Welfare Approved standards are presently the most rigorous standards for farm animal welfare currently in use in the United States. Every aspect of each species’ lifestyle, from birth to death, is checked. Gaining an Animal Welfare Approved seal is hard earned and demonstrates the farmer’s commitment to care of the animals, land and their community. Participation in this program is completely voluntary. Serenity Acres has been awarded the funding to improve mobile housing for their laying hens. Mobile houses are chicken coops that can be rotated around pastureland so that the chickens have access to graze fresh grass, insects and worms.
