Indoor Marijuana Grow Houses Found

Indoorgrowhouse

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Wednesday the 15th day of August 2012 the Sheriff’s Office received a complaint concerning the possible theft of electric power. An investigation into the complaint by the Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force confirmed that electric power was being diverted to two (2) separate structures on the property.
The property was secured and a warrant to search the property was obtained. The property was located at 6939 SW #1 Federal Road Lamont Florida and in the name of Octavio Cruz. The search discovered two (2) active indoor marijuana grow houses and the partial construction of two (2) additional grow houses. A total of 103 marijuana plants were seized from the operation as well as destruction of the functional grow houses. Octavio Cruz was not present at the location and the scene indicated that persons present obviously departed hastily.
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Taylor County Drug Task assisted the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force in the investigation.

Skip Jarvis Withdraws Candidacy

State Attorney Robert “Skip” Jarvis, who will appear before a grand jury on an allegation that he misused his office has withdrawn his candidacy for re-election to the seat. Below is a statement that Jarvis issued Monday:

Twenty-eight years ago I proudly took an oath to enforce the laws of the State of Florida and to protect and defend it’s Constitution and the Constitution of the United States. I have continued to serve proudly, twenty-four years as an Assistant State Attorney and for the past four as your elected State Attorney.
During these twenty-eight years I feel that I have directly made a difference in many lives, both victims and defendants, while pursuing justice under the law. I have used my position to promote the interests of the citizens I serve.
Now, in the midst of my bid for re-election, I am faced with a decision of whether to fight an allegation initiated by a former disgruntled employee and further pursued by persons unknown that has resulted in a grand jury investigation. I have reviewed the limited information that the specially appointed State Attorney has been willing to provide to me and firmly believe that there is no basis for any charges, much less the time and expense of a grand jury investigation. It appears to be purely politically motivated, however in responding to it to prove my innocence I will be distracted from my re-election campaign and forced to spend personal funds that were intended to fund my campaign. The mere fact that there was an announcement of a grand jury investigation has brought political hurdles that must be overcome irregardless of the outcome of the investigation.
Additionally, I have watched the toll this first term in office has taken on my family members, especially my wife who has stood by my side for over forty-three years.
We have both withstood the personal attacks during the 2008 campaign, the false allegations in 2010 made by a former employee who was directed to cease involving this office in her personal politics, and now the allegation that I have somehow acted improperly as State Attorney by accessing certain criminal intelligence information and law enforcement records which I had, as State Attorney, full authority to view. While each of these issues in themselves carry little merit, as a whole they wear upon a person to the extent that I must consider whether remaining in office is worth the price to me and my family.
I have considered the strides we have made with the office in the face of a drastically reduced budget. I have begun assembling a team of young prosecutors to take the place of older retiring ones. I have put in place upgrades in equipment and vehicles,
training, and job assignments for better efficiency.
I am proud of what we have done over the past four years and of my twenty-eight year career with this office.
With that said, I am tired. I have given my life to the citizens of the Third Judicial Circuit. I have given my health to them. I have sacrificed precious time that I could have spent with my wife and family and given priority to the interests of the people. Many recognize this, most do not. Some appreciate this, most do not care, and some even resent it.
I feel a loyalty to my staff, some of whom left other jobs to come to work for me. I fear that their loyalty to me might become for them a liability and jeopardize whether their career with this office is safe from reprisal.
I feel a loyalty to my loyal supporters who have pledged their support in my bid for re-election, however it comes down to the fact that the spark in me is dying. I no longer have the spirit nor desire to go on in the face of the pressure and current public attitude toward public servants.
Therefore, Pam and I have decided that I should accept the offer made to me by State Attorney Brad King that if I would withdraw my bid for re-election, all issues scheduled to be presented to the Leon County Grand Jury will go away, that I will be allowed to complete my current term in office, and that my thirty plus years service toward vested retirement will not be affected. It is their threat of taking my retirement, something I had trusted would take care of my wife after I am gone, that is my greatest fear.
With this, I thank each and every one whose faith in me has kept me going. To my staff, I thank each and every one of you for your faithfulness and loyalty. To others, I wish you the best, whether you are a supporter or an opponent.
Thank you to the citizens who entrusted me with this office for the past four years. I will forever be proud of the job that I have done and of your trust in me. Now it is time for me to make up for lost time with my family so I bid you each a most sincere good-bye.

Robert L. “Skip” Jarvis, Jr.
State Attorney
Third Judicial Circuit of Florida

FDLE arrests Madison County commissioner

For Immediate Release
August 8, 2012

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Office of Executive Investigations, today secured an arrest warrant for Alfred Junior Martin, 52, of Madison, for two counts of grand theft and two counts of official misconduct; each of the charges is a third-degree felony. Martin is a county commissioner for Madison County as well as the fire chief for the city of Madison.

FDLE began its investigation in November of 2011 after receiving a complaint against Martin from an employee of the city of Madison. The complaint alleged that Martin falsified receipts relating to the improper use of funds from the Madison County Volunteer Firemen’s bank account.

The investigation alleges that, on two different occasions, Martin failed to deposit money which had been given to him by the City of Madison to reimburse the Madison Volunteer Fire Department for expenses it incurred relating to the City of Madison employee luncheons in 2009 and 2010. Total losses to Madison County totaled slightly more than $1000.

Martin was arrested without incident and booked into the Madison County Jail on a
bond of $10,000.

Tennis, Anyone?

George English, who heads up the US Tennis Association in Tallahassee, and Madison City Commissioner Ina Thompson speak to the Madison Rotary Club about generating interest among parents and community members for bringing “10 and Under” tennis to Madison.

George English, who heads up the US Tennis Association in Tallahassee, and Madison City Commissioner Ina Thompson speak to the Madison Rotary Club about generating interest among parents and community members for bringing “10 and Under” tennis to Madison.

By Lynette Norris
Greene Publishing, Inc.
Tennis, a game for young and old, can be played with as few as two people, whether they want to burn up the court in a serious singles match or just hit a few balls back and forth.
George English, who heads up the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for this region, visited the Madison Rotary Club to talk about promoting tennis in Madison County – specifically, a version for “10 and Under.” With childhood obesity reaching ever-higher rates, and physical education classes disappearing from public schools, English and Madison City Commissioner Ina Thompson discussed introducing children, ages five-to-ten, to the sport. They would both like to see children get involved with something fun that would lure them away from the computers, the television and the video games…and tennis, modified a little just for them, might be the ticket.
The problem before with trying to get younger children interested in the adult version of the “sport of kings,” is primarily the size of the court – quite a chunk of real estate for little legs to cover. The net is too high for little ones, the long-handled tennis racket is unwieldy, and the balls are hard to hit…and hard, if anyone got hit in the head by a high, fast lob. Younger children were more likely to quit in frustration than develop any real interest in the game.
Taking a cue from other children’s sports, like T-ball, where equipment is scaled down to make it easier for smaller hands to grasp, the new “10 and Under” tennis in America is following a trend that has already been going strong for 20 to 30 years in most of Europe.
“10 and Under” tennis uses a court half the size of an adult court with a shorter temporary net, for children aged five to eight. The rackets are shorter and the tennis balls are made of Nerf-ball like foam. They don’t bounce as high, but they are easier to hit as the younger ones learn the basics of the game, particularly the eye-hand coordination of swinging the smaller racket and making contact with the ball.
“10 and Under” will also grow with them, with a slightly larger court and heavier balls when they reach the nine/ten-year-old-group. Later, when they reach the adult-sized game, they will have already acquired the basic skills, and had fun while doing it.
Fun is the main purpose of the “10 and Under” tennis, English and Thompson emphasized several times. The intricacies of a “top spin” and other trick shots will come later, if they want to get into more serious, competitive tennis. “10 and Under” is mainly to get them started, on a court that is more their size, using the age-appropriate equipment, where they can have fun and are more likely to develop a life-long interest.
Another advantage of “10 and Under” is its portability. It does not require a tennis court, just flat area anywhere, indoors or out. Temporary tape can mark off a court on a gym floor, a school cafeteria floor, or a parking lot, and a temporary net can be set up for play. Scaled-down rackets, lighter balls, children who want to play and a few adults to teach and encourage them are all that are needed to begin.
With a grant from USTA, Madison has acquired about $1000 worth of equipment. Now “we need some enthusiasm,” said Thompson. “We’ve got to get the interest going first…we need to get the parents and the community behind it for it to take off.” The parents need to be positive and encouraging, not critical and demanding.
There is a workshop for parents who would like to “score points with their kids,” Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the NFCC Gym. The registration fee is $15 per person, and those participants will receive expert instruction and all the materials they need to coach, organize and help “10 and Under” tennis take off and find a place here in Madison.
For more information, visit usta.com/oncourttraining, contact George English at (850) 510-6585 or email him at English@florida.usta.com, or contact Ina Thompson at (850) 445-7755. To register online for the workshop, go to www.madisonworkshop.eventbrite.com
