State Attorney Skip Jarvis announced today that after considering the facts developed during the continuing investigation of the death of James Edward Campbell on March 15, 2012, and the Indictment returned by the Madison County Grand Jury on April 20, 2012, the State of Florida will be seeking the death penalty upon a conviction in this case.
Jarvis said “This decision is not taken lightly. The facts show a vulnerable victim living alone who was coldly and callously killed, then left for days on the floor of his home while the defendant came and went, stealing items from the victim’s home.”

FDLE announces lowest crime rate in 41 years

Violent crime down 3.7 percent

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey joined local and state criminal justice officials today to announce the 2011 Annual Uniform Crime Report. The report shows Florida’s crime rate dropped 0.8 percent compared to 2010.

“While it is good news that Florida’s crime rate is at a 41-year low, we must continue to remember that each crime represents a victim whose rights must be protected,” said Governor Rick Scott. “On behalf of all Floridians and visitors to our state, I applaud the dedication and hard work of our law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day to make our state safer and our communities more secure.”

The total number of crimes dropped 0.1 percent last year. The number of violent crimes (murder, forcible sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault) was down by 3.7 percent.

“Florida’s crime rate is the lowest it has been in 41 years,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi. “We are blessed to live in a state with such dedicated law enforcement officers and prosecutors, and we must always remember the great sacrifices they make for our safety.”

“Overall, the 2011 Uniform Crime Report is good news,” said Commissioner Gerald Bailey. “Since FDLE began tracking crime statistics in 1971, citizens are safer today than any time in the last four decades.”

The report showed a 0.2 percent decrease in the number of murders, a 0.1 percent decrease in forcible sex offenses, a 1.8 percent decrease in robberies and a 5 percent drop in aggravated assault.

Non-violent crime (burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) increased 0.4 percent. Burglary and larceny each rose 0.7 percent. The number of motor vehicle thefts decreased by 4.4 percent.

“Florida’s Sheriffs and Deputies are willing to give their lives to protect Florida, and we are grateful for their sacrifice and for another year of reduced crime,” said Steve Casey, executive director of the Florida Sheriffs Association. “The 2011 Uniform Crime Report demonstrates our collaborative work is paying off and that we are maintaining our quality of life.”

“The continued decline in Florida’s overall crime rate is a positive reflection of the hard work being done by law enforcement officers around the state in cooperation with the citizens they serve,” said Florida Police Chief’s Association First Vice President and Tallahassee Police Department Chief Dennis Jones. “Without the support of our community partners, our efforts to reduce and prevent crime would not be possible.”

Domestic violence offenses continued to decline in 2011, showing a 1.5 percent drop from 2010 numbers. Cohabitants continue to be the largest group of victims in this category, with spouses remaining the second largest group.

“We appreciate the hard work and partnerships with law enforcement to keep domestic violence survivors and their children safe and hold perpetrators accountable,” said Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence President and CEO Tiffany Carr. “While we are certainly pleased to see that overall domestic violence crimes continued to decline slightly in 2011, we are committed to work with our law enforcement partners to address the significant increase in stalking.”

Violent crimes committed by firearms continued to drop from 25,184 in 2010 to 24,737 in 2011. The number of justifiable homicides increased in 2011. Seventy felons were killed by police officers, compared to 56 in 2010. The number of felons killed by private citizens increased to 48, compared to 40 in 2010.

The report also contains information on officers killed feloniously. Seven law enforcement officers and one correctional officer died from criminal causes while on duty during 2011. In addition, three law enforcement officers died accidently during the course of duty.

The complete 2011 Annual Uniform Crime Report, including county-by-county breakdowns, can be found on FDLE’s website at www.fdle.state.fl.us/fsac/ucr/.

Attempted Murder Update

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that the apprehension of Antwan Maurice Miller for the charges of attempted murder were as result of the following:
On the early morning hours (12:34 AM) of Sunday the 8th day of April 2012, Sheriff’s Deputies on routine patrol at an area in Greenville Florida known as the “Rec-Room” located at 1358 SW Grand Street were advised that a fight had started inside during a party. Sheriff’s Deputies entered the building to stop the fights and disperse the crowds. As persons were exiting the building, fights ensued outside and Officers on the scene requested additional Officers for assistance. Rashard Miller and Antwan Miller, both known by a Sheriff’s Deputy, were observed arguing and were separated and ordered to leave the area. Upon dispersing the crowd from the “Rec-Room” Deputies noted the crowd gathering again down the street at an area known as the “Boom-Boom Room” located at 1622 SW Grand street Greenville, Fl.
Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the new location of the large crowd and while again attempting to disperse the crowd, witnesses informed the Officers that Rashard Miller had been stabbed. Officers located Rashard Miller within the crowd and noted that he was bleeding profusely from his abdomen. Rashard Miller immediately, without prompting, identified the suspect to be Antwan Miller. Officers requested immediate back up and an ambulance for medical attention as additional and sporadic fighting within the crowd continued.
Upon arrival of additional Officers, persons failing to comply with lawful orders and continuing to fight, obstruct officers of their lawful duty and/or incite the riot were arrested. Three (3) persons were arrested for their involvement in the disturbance and are as follows:
Melvin Morris: B/M, DOB: 12/05/1988 of Greenville Florida. Charged with Affray
Javon Hampton, B/M, DOB: 05/06/1990 of Tallahassee Fl. Charged with Inciting a riot and Obstruction
Johnny Morris, B/M, DOB: 10/31/1990 of Greenville, Fl. Charged with inciting a riot.
While continuing to disperse crowds and apprehend those failing to comply, Officers on the scene were informed of a vehicle accident and soon learned the vehicle was occupied by the suspect of the stabbing, Antwan Miller. Witnesses inside the wrecked vehicle confirmed Antwans presence and explained that Antwan Miller was attempting to flee the scene en route to Tallahassee Florida when the accident occurred but he had been picked up by an unknown motorist before officers arrived at the accident scene.
Rashard Miller was stabilized and transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where he was admitted with serious bodily injury. At the time of this updated release, Rashard Miller has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.
The investigation into the stabbing remained pending until presenting a probable cause affidavit and an arrest warrant for Antwan Maurice Miller was issued and executed.
Antwan Maurice Miller Posted bond and was released from the Madison County Jail on Wednesday the 25th day of April 2012.
This case remains pending additional investigations and possible arrest.

Jacob’s Ladder: Television

By Jacob Bembry
Editor

When I was a child, I loved watching westerns and crime dramas on television. I would pretend that I was Marshal Dillon, or McGarrett from Hawaii Five-O or Reed or Malloy from Adam-12.

These shows were lost to the ages for me, along with my childhood, unless I caught reruns on an obscure channel on cable or satellite and then it was hit and miss as far as the time the shows aired. Now, though, I can watch the shows anytime I like either on Netflix or on Hulu.

Along with these shows, I can also watched old childhood favorite cartoons like The Archies and Fat Albert. I can catch reruns of old sitcoms like Dennis the Menace, Green Acres and the Andy Griffith Show. For my love of sci fi, I can even watch the original (and the best) Star Trek shows.

I have watched most of the Dragnet reruns on Hulu and, right now, I am addicted to watching the Adam-12 reruns on Netflix.

There are so many newer shows that have no redeeming value to them. Even the “family” cable channels are cluttered with them. As a Christian, it is hard to swallow these shows. I would much rather dine on the wholesomeness of the old shows.

Remembrance of Things Past: Karla Hanners

By Kristin Finney
Greene Publishing, Inc.

Karla Hanners has been in Madison for the majority of her life. She came to Madison at the age of three from Perry. According to Hanners, growing up in Madison back then was very different than it is now. There were many more activities for the youth of the city back then.

Hanners attended elementary school at Madison Primary School then went to the Madison Middle School. She then went to Madison High School. Once the new high school opened, Hanners went to Madison County High School for one year also.

For fun, Hanners and her friends spent a lot of time at the walk-in theater. After the walk-in theatre closed, the building became a game room where Hanners spent a lot of time as well. Then the building finally became, and remains today, the Court House Annex. She also remembers when Winn Dixie was in the building that Farmer’s Furniture now resides in. After Winn Dixie moved from that building, it became a skating rink. “I enjoyed going there in my later teens,” said Hanners. After the skating rink closed, Farmers Furniture moved in and has remained there ever since.

Other memories that Hanners has include when Pic-n-Save was located where CVS currently sits. “My younger sister, Sherry, worked at Pic-n-Save as her first job,” she recalled. Hanners remembers when Pantry Pride was the only grocery store in town. She also recalls that before the pawn shop, that burned down a couple of years ago, was a pawn shop, it was an IGA.

“On of my favorite memories from growing up was lunch time in high school. When I was going to the old high school still, we got to leave for lunch. So a group of my friends and I would leave and walk to the Winn Dixie parking lot and one of us would go to the bakery next door and buy all sorts of bakery stuff, and another would go into Winn Dixie and buy a bag of Funyons. That was what we had for lunch every day. I miss that,” said Hanners. “Back then there were a lot of bakeries in Madison. I loved having all of those bakeries here. There was one next to Winn Dixie and one across from the First United Methodist Church.

Hanners stated, “When I was growing up here we had a lot of things for the youth to do. There were a lot of activities in town to keep them busy. Now there is nothing here for the youth to do. People wonder why kids keep getting into trouble, and that is why.”

Karla Hanners is married to Keith Hanners. They have two daughters, Felicia (Marc) McCrary and Chelsea Hanners. They also have two grandchildren, Haeden and Jacen McCrary.

Anyone interested in being interviewed for this article can call 973-4141 and make an appointment with Kristin Finney, or may drop by Greene Publishing, Inc. any day before noon. Those interviewed must have lived in Madison for a large portion of their life, and be able to recall a few things that have changed since that time.

Happenings At Madison First Baptist Church

By Nell Dobbs
Guest Columnist

Walk by Faith. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” Hebrews 11:1 and we pray for run with patience the race that is set before us.

Love God and love our neighbor. In our lesson Sunday we studied about a certain lawyer who was trying to trick Jesus as others did. “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Not until I was studying this lesson did I ever think of how the Jews thought about what they should do. A song says, “Nothing good have I done to deserve even one.” Nothing can we do to be saved except by accepting His free gift of salvation! And that fact makes us know that “He loves me. He loves you.”

The word certain from Luke 10:
a certain lawyer
a certain man
a certain priest not mentioned as such but a Levite
a certain Samaritan

Another thought…The priest passed on the other side. The Levite passed by on the other side. Did the two of them pass by on the same side? The important fact is that someone helped the man in need. It is a certain fact we cannot help everyone in need, but we can help those we can!

What a wonderful response to the Sunday breakfast for Kristen Parks as the goal was met for her Mission Trip to Haiti. We are thankful God touches our hearts for His Commission is to “Go and Tell” and/or to send someone to tell. Thus far our Annie Armstrong collection is $1,695. Bless all in our town going on mission trips. The fields are white unto harvest – there and here.

It is so very good to have Pearl Raines back home and better after being ill with family in Alabama.

We welcome all visitors and were happy to see David and Donna Townsend, now living in Tennessee and Evelyn and Sam Lamb’s visitor from Kansas and all others.

Our Music Man Jim is recovering from knee surgery and we are thankful, but Sunday Mark Branham filled in for him and we appreciate that they both are great.

Deacon of the Week Bill Brown prayed the offertory prayer. Lynne played “How Firm a Foundation,” but I had to ask her the title though certain phrases came to mind. We are so blessed she’s with us. Choir sang “Because We Believe.”

Preacher Law gave thanks doctors say he’s cancer free and the whole church rejoiced!!! His message was from II Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that we all may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” The Bible is the Book of Books. “What Do We as Baptists Believe” will be his message. “We are to study to show ourselves approved unto God…rightly dividing the word of Truth.”

There was a Vacation Bible School Clinic Monday night at Hopewell Baptist. The theme is “Amazing Wonders Aviation.” Judy Phillips is the director.

SAM Group visited the Rose Festival in Thomasville, Ga. Wednesday.

We ask God to help us give thanks for His great love and mercy and for the beauty of the Earth! Amen!

National Security: Stray Vectors

By Joe Boyles
Guest Columnist

Editor’s note: “Stray Vectors” is the author’s byline for random thoughts on the passing scene.
The United States International Longshoreman’s union has named China as the best friend to their workers. I think those fellows are working the wrong docks. Maybe they should try the other side of the Pacific.

Should the Social Security Administration recognize survivor benefits for children conceived and born after someone’s death using invitro fertilization? The Supreme Court will decide. It’s a “brave new world” folks.

Moment of nostalgia: during my days at the “Rocky Mountain School for Wayward Boys” (aka Air Force Academy) in the late 1960s, we were serenaded at the end of every leave by the Animals “We Gotta Get Out of this Place.” Remember that classic line in the chorus: “girl there’s a better life for me and you.” Ah, to be 20 once again!

These “separation of church and state” people really get under my skin, particularly when it comes to education. For centuries, the church was our center of education. The first printed book – Guttenberg’s Bible. We’re turning away from our heritage. Shame.

It seems that Iranian nuclear scientists are dying at an alarming rate from things like car bombs and other assorted “accidents.” Strange.

Here’s a fundamental difference between Democrats and Republicans. If a Democrat politician says the right thing, that’s fine with his supporters. Doesn’t matter whether or not he delivers, just so long as he says the right thing. Republicans pay a lot more attention to what a politician does rather than what he says.

Today, the most visible sign of our lack of a realistic, coherent, sustainable energy policy is price at the pump. Yes, higher energy prices and shortages cause the price of all goods and services to rise, but where it really hits home is when we stop at a gas station and begin to pump gas into the vehicle and open our wallet to pay the ever increasing cost.

Judging from his rants that the Supreme Court has no basis for overturning Obamacare, Barack Obama may have been a “constitutional law professor,” but he wasn’t very good. How may of his former students are now jurists? Just what did he teach?

It is often said that “young people are bulletproof” meaning they are foolhardy, but going on spring break to Mexico now is beyond the pale. With all the drug-related murders and kidnapping going on south of the border, a Mexican vacationer should have his head examined before attempting such a trip.

Rick Santorum claims that Mitt Romney is a Johnny-come-lately to conservatism. At least he got there!

Former baseball pitcher Roger Clemmons is going on trial again accused of lying to Congress. I say turn about is fair play. Those guys lie to us every day. Lying to Congress; that’s an oxymoron!

Anders Breivik, the whacko who killed 77 Norwegians last summer, may get 21 years in prison if convicted. Something’s not quite right with this picture.

Want to know why I’m against the so-called Buffett rule? Two reasons. First, I don’t think fairness (as defined by some politician) is adequate justification to pass a law. Second, I’m against taking any more money out of our struggling economy and giving it to politicians and Washington bureaucrats so they can wastefully spend it.

The Social Security trustees have reported again that both Social Security (2033) and Medicare (2024) are set to run out of funds earlier than expected. No surprise here. I’ve reported to you before in this column on how these dates keep backing up … and will continue to do so. What has President Obama proposed over the last three years to address this fiscal train wreck? Nothing; no leadership whatsoever.

Apparently, more illegal aliens (or whatever the politically correct term is) from Mexico are leaving the US to return to their homeland than ever before. First time this has happened since the Great Depression in the 1930s. It’s the polar opposite of economic development and prosperity.

What actually went on during the Trayvon Martin – George Zimmerman confrontation that led to the young man’s death? Beats me. I suppose that the facts will be discovered in a court of law and left to a jury to decide.
