Spring Break Tough on Cowboy Baseball

Submitted by Wayne Money
The Cowboy varsity baseball team lost two games this week while on their annual Spring break from the daily high school grind. Hard to stay focused on baseball when there’s trips to take, Spring cleaning to do around the house and whatever else teenagers do these days. With the 11 to 1 loss to Valdosta and the 7 to 2 loss to Wakulla the Cowboys season record now stands at 12 wins and 6 losses, with a district record of 4 wins and 2 losses. The Cowboys will be back to their normal routine beginning Monday April 2nd when they travel to Quitman to take on the Brooks County Trojans, and after that the Cowboys will be home for seven straight games beginning April 5th against the Lafayette Hornets at 7:00pm.

Just Win Baby

Submitted by Wayne Money

The Cowboy varsity baseball team traveled to Live Oak Tuesday for a contest against Melody Christian Academy at 5:00pm, and came away with a 2 to 1 victory. The Cowboys were held to a season low four hits, but they were timely enough to produce their 12th win of the season. The Cowboys season record now stands at 12 wins and 4 losses, with a district record of 4 wins and 2 losses. Taylor Howell picked up his fourth win of the season against no losses pitching 4 2/3 innings, and Heath Carroll got the final out of the game for his third save of the season. As a good friend of mine likes to say “it doesn’t matter how, JUST WIN BABY”.

On the night, Aaron Brown had 2 hits and Zack Money was 1 for 2 scoring once and driving in his 13th run of the season. Taylor Howell added a single and a run scored, and Heath Carroll drove in his 21st run of the season. That was it offensively… Probably saving their swings for this Thursday’s district contest. As a side note, the Cowboys lead the state in Division 4A with 134 runs scored and are 5th overall statewide.

ABSOLUTE FINAL REMINDER – The next home game is Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00pm against those folks from Taylor County, so rest up and come out and help the Cowboys whip them dogs.

Mosquitoes and Baseball

Submitted by Wayne Money
The Cowboy varsity baseball team traveled to Jasper Monday night expecting just a non-district contest against the Hamilton County Trojans, but they had to brave swarms of mosquitoes as well to bring home their eleventh win of the season. The Cowboys won the game 7 to 3 against the Trojans and their blood sucking mates and now have a season record of 11 wins and 4 losses, with a district record of 4 wins and 2 losses. Jarrod Burns picked up his third win of the season pitching 4 shutout innings, and DJ McKnight pitched 3 innings in relief for his second save of the season.

On the night, Heath Carroll and DJ McKnight had two hits each including two triples for DJ and four RBI’s for Heath. Adam Odiorne contributed with a single and two RBI’s, and Dustin Bezick, Jarrod Burns, Taylor Howell, and Jake Latner pitched in with singles. The traveling Cowboy fans came through as well killing in bunches the flying vampires that infested the premises.

The Cowboys take the field again Tuesday, March 20th when they travel to Live Oak for a contest against Melody Christian Academy at 5:00pm.

FINAL REMINDER – The next home game is Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00pm against the Taylor County Bulldogs, so rest up and come out Thursday and help the Cowboys whip them dogs.

Long But Perfect Week

On Friday night in Quincy, the Cowboy varsity baseball team won their second district game of the week and fourth game of the week overall against the host East Gadsden Jaguars. It was evident from the start the players were a little flat and it would be a struggle to finish out a week that included four games, a sponsor luncheon, nine week exams, a wonderful Rally-for-Ryan, practice and a lot of girl chasing. The Cowboys trailed 4 to 2 heading into the sixth inning, but they finally found the patience and energy to force across seven runs and end any hopes the Jaguars had for an upset. With the 9 to 4 victory, the Cowboys season record now stands at 10 wins and 4 losses, with a 4A District 2 leading record of 4 and 2. Taylor Howell picked up the victory pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out eleven, and Heath Carroll relieved shutting down the Jaguars for 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Heath lowered his team leading ERA to 1.20 and has now pitched 11 2/3 innings on the season with only one hit batter.

For the game, Patrick Bowen led the way offensively going 4 for 4 at the plate. Jarrod Burns, Heath Carroll, an Jake Latner all went 2 for 4 at the plate with Jarrod driving in two runs and launching his 2nd home run of the season, Heath driving in four runs and Jake driving in two. DJ McKnight and Taylor Howell added singles with DJ driving in his team high 16th run of the season.

The Cowboys take the field again Monday, March 19th when they travel to Jasper for a contest against the Hamilton County Trojans at 7:00pm.
DON’T FORGET – The next home game is Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00pm against those Bulldogs from Taylor County, so rest up and come out Thursday and help cheer the Cowboys to victory. I’ll betcha this will be a game to remember.

In a key district matchup, the Cowboy varsity baseball team won a nail-biter Tuesday night against the visiting Godby Cougars from Tallahassee. With a huge and rowdy crowd as witness, the Cowboys jumped on top early and held on for an intense 4 to 2 victory that puts them in great shape as far as the district standings. With the win, the Cowboys season record now stands at 9 wins and 4 losses, with a district record of 3 and 2. Zack Money picked up the victory pitching 4 innings of two hit ball, and Aaron Brown came in relief and completely dominated the Cougar batters for 3 innings which allowed him to pick up his first save of the season. On the night, the two Cowboy pitchers allowed only three hits and two unearned runs while striking out ten and issuing four free passes.

For the game, Jarrod Burns led the way offensively going 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI’S. The Cowboys let loose for – - 9 runs, 15 hits, 4 free passes, 8 RBI’s, 1 home run, 2 doubles and 5 stolen bases. Looking at the stats, one would think a blowout ensued; however, the 9 to 6 score was closer than the Madison faithful would have wanted. With the win, the Cowboys season record now stands at 8 wins and 4 losses, with a district record of 2 and 2. Jarrod Burns picked up the victory pitching 4 1/3 innings, and Heath Carroll relieved for 2 2/3 innings for his second save of the season.

Cowboys Lose Another Close Game

The nine inning game played Tuesday night wasn’t pretty defensively, but it was close. The Cowboys dropped their second district game of the season to the Taylor County Bulldogs 9 to 8 leaving their season record at 5 wins and 4 losses. The game started off nicely enough with the Cowboys jumping out to an early 4 to 0 lead in the second inning, but miscues in the field allowed the Bulldogs back into the game. The Cowboys were still leading 8 to 5 going into the bottom of the seventh; however, the Bulldogs rallied for 3 runs to knot the score at 8. After a scoreless inning by both teams, the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Overall on the night, the Cowboys committed six errors which allowed for four unearned runs.

As a team, the Cowboys could only muster seven hits along with seven free passes. Jake Latner led the way with three hits and two RBI’s, and Heath Carroll came through with two hits. Aaron Brown added two RBI’s, and Adam Odiorne had two of the seven free passes. Zack Money pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out eleven while walking only two. The Cowboys take the field next when they travel to Tallahassee Thursday, March 7th for a 7:30pm contest against the Florida High Seminoles.

Cowboys Even District Record

Cowboys Even District Record

With a great crowd on hand Friday night , the varsity Cowboys evened their district record at one win and one loss with an 8 to 3 victory over the visiting Jaguars from East Gadsden. The Cowboys overall record now stands at 5 and 3 as they head into the middle part of the season which includes four district games in the next eleven days. Coach Barrs thinks the team is starting to come together as evidenced by a strong pitching performance by Jarrod Burns, timely hitting, and a great save at first base by Heath Carroll. Jarrod Burns picked up the victory pitching six strong innings while allowing only four base runners and striking out eleven.

As a team, the Cowboys notched ten hits and six free passes. Aaron Brown led the way with two hits including a homerun. Heath Carroll contributed with two hits and two RBI’s, and Jake Latner, Zack Money and Jarrod Burns pitched in with doubles. The brightest part of the night might have been the Cowboy batters only striking out three times. The Cowboys take the field next when they travel to Perry Tuesday, March 5th for a 7:00pm contest against the Taylor County Bulldogs.

Road Trip Misery For Cowboys

Submitted by Wayne Money
On Wednesday night, the Cowboy baseball squad faced off against the Godby Cougars of Tallahassee in the first district game of the season, and the Godby pitcher was not a welcoming host. The Cougars blanked the Cowboys 4 to 0 leaving the Cowboys with a season record of 4 wins and 3 losses. Zack Money was strapped with the loss after allowing four hits and five free passes; however, pitcher Aaron Brown provided hope after relieving and shutting down the Cougars for 2.1 innings. The Cowboys had opportunities to push runs across, but just could never break through.

As a team, the Cowboys had only five hits and one free pass while striking out thirteen times. Patrick Bowen and Jarrod Burns led the way with two singles each, and Zack Money pitched in with a double. This is just one loss and must be forgotten quickly as the Cowboys take the field again tonight at 7 p.m. as hosts against the East Gadsden Jaguars.

Come support the Cowboys as they try and even their record in this all important district game.

It took nine innings Thursday night, but the Cowboys prevailed over the Berrien Rebels in the second round of the Valdosta Invitational Tournament.
