Obituary: Larry Bruce Bell

Larry Bruce Bell, age 69, died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Big Bend Hospice.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel with burial at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.

He was born July 7, 1943 in Ft. Worth, Texas, and moved to Madison 26 years ago.

He worked at NFCC and was a life- time member of VFW Post 1933, Silvis, IL, Madison Country Club, Elks Lodge. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, Valdosta, GA. He is survived by his wife: Betty Bell of Madison; 1 son: Chris Bell of Mableton, GA; Step-Mother: Florence Irene Bell of Des Moines, IA; Sister: Sandy Wilson of Spokane, WA; Sister and Brother-in-Law Michael and Sharon Cuppett.

Obituary: Robert Eugene Byington, Sr.

Robert Eugene Byington, Sr, age 72, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at his home in Valdosta.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 1 from 5 – 8 PM at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel.

He was born In Micanopy and moved to Madison before moving to Valdosta in 1987. He was a Blue Grass Musician and played the Banjo with the Georgia Five, and worked as a Deputy at Madison Police Department, and Florida State Trooper. He was a retired Engineer from Norfolk and Southern Railroad.

He is survived by his wife: Patsy Byington of Valdosta; 2 Sons: Robert E Byington Jr (Michelle) of Valdosta, and Russell “Rusty” Byington (Deborah) of Lake Park, GA; 2 stepsons: Aaron Sparks (Carrie) of Valdosta, and Shawn Chabot (Jamilyn) of PA,; 1 daughter: Jeri O’Halloran of Valdosta; 1 step-daughter Adrienne Sparks of Valdosta; 2 Brothers: Roger Byington (Loretta) , and Barney “Jr” Byington (Wanda) both of Greenville; 1 sister: Bootsie Cone (Jim) of Greenville; 17 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren.

Obituary: Franklin “Buddy” Carroll, Sr.

Franklin “Buddy” Carroll, SR, age 75, died Monday, February 25, 2013 at his home in Greenville.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5 – 7 PM at Beggs Funeral Home.

He was born in Greenville where he lived all his life. He drove a School Bus for Madison County School System before his retirement. He worked as a Logger and Farmer also. He was a member of Sirmans Baptist Church for 42 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years: Ida Louise (Wilson) Carroll; 4 Children: Frankie Carroll (Dela), Brenda Wynn (David), Glenda Sirmon (Johnny), Jamie Carroll (Aimee); 14 Grandchildren;8 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Great Grandchild and 1 son-in-law Paul Rudloff; 5 siblings: Eunice Blanton, Mary (J.T.) Peterson, Frances (Darrell) Thigpen, Johnny (Jean) Carroll, and Bonnie Vick;

He was preceded in death by his parents: Lee and Mary Carroll and daughter: Rhonda Carroll Rudloff.

Obituary: Donnie T. Newsome

Mr. Donnie T. Newsome age 73 of Pearson, Ga. passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the home of his daughter following an extended illness.

A native of Lee County, Fl., Mr. Newsome was born January 29, l940 son of Russell J. and Ruth Toole Newsome. He had made his home in Douglas for many years before moving to Pearson 7 years ago. He was a retired truck driver from the Savannah Ports Authority. He was a longtime member of the Elks and Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlene Dafler Newsome and a daughter, Sandy Jo Courson.

Survivors include:

1 Daughter: Margie O’Brien and husband Joey of Pearson, Ga.

1 Son: Donald Wright and wife Annette of Perry, Fl.

1 Brother: Eugene Newsome and wife Lorene of Madison, Fl.

1 Sister: Dot Daniels of Madison, Fl.

9 Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Memorial services for Mr. Newsome were held at 6 P. M. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. with Rev. Tim Blanton officiating.

Jesse McDaniel, Correctional Officer At Jail, Dies

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart regretfully reports that current Madison County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer Sergeant Jesse O. McDaniel died Wednesday morning the 20h day of February 2013. Sergeant McDaniel was 53 years of age.
Sgt. Jesse McDaniel served in the United States Air Force 1978 to 1989 until his honorable discharge with an E-5 Rank. Sgt. McDaniel pursued a career with the Florida Department of Corrections from 1989 to 2003 and was eventually employed with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office from 2005 until his passing.
Sgt. Jesse O. McDaniel is survived by his Mother: Annie Ruth McDaniel, sister: Ella Edwards, brother: Willie McDaniel, and two sons: Jerrod and Jason McDaniel.

Obituary: Wesley Cole Agner, Jr.

Wesley “Cole” Agner, Jr. 57, of Madison and Wakulla Station passed away February 18, 2013 at his home in Madison. Cole was born on June 19, 1955 in Madison to the late Wesley Cole Agner, Sr. and Mary Alice Sawyer Agner.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 21, 2013, at Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel with burial at Barbara Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 20, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Cole was owner and operator of Cole Agner Trucking. His greatest joys in life was spoiling his granddaughters, Harley and Eva, sitting on his front porch in Madison watching the deer walk across the fields and pastures during the daytime and watching airplanes fly overhead at night. He enjoyed farming, raising cows, and collecting John Deere memorabilia.

Cole is survived by Shirley Rigdon of Wakulla Station; two sons: Wesley (Opie) Agner and Cheryl, and Josh Agner and Misty and their children Ashlyn and Blake, all of Lake Butler; one brother, Rockey Agner and Tina of Madison; four sisters: Elaine Ponder and Gene of Piedmont, Ala., Pam Cherry and Keith of Jacksonville, Priscilla Newbern and Mike of Auburndale and Yvonne Plain and Mike of Lee. He is also survived by granddaughters, Harley and Eva Rigdon and their parents, Justin and Dawn Rigdon of Crawfordville; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and devoted friends, Phyllis and Ken Hobbs of Wakulla Station.

Cole was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends, never to be forgotten.

Obituary: Lonnie Burton Welch

Lonnie Burton Welch, 82, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013. He was a loving husband, wonderful father, and a very beloved granddad. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lon and Cordie Welch of Madison, FL. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Myrtice Woodard Welch of Vestavia Hills, Ala., and his brother, William (Bill) Langford Welch and his wife Nancy of Vestavia Hills, Ala. He is also survived by his sons: Greg Welch of Vestavia Hills, Ala., Gary (Lisa) Welch of Helena, Ala., and Wayne (Susan) Welch of Vestavia Hills, Ala.; his daughter, Rhonda (Steve) Anthony of Flower Mound, Tex.; eight grandchildren: Shane (Randi) Welch, Garrett Welch, Robert Welch, Amanda Welch, Ashley Welch, Mary Todd Anthony, Lilly Anthony, and Haleigh Frances Anthony; and many other beloved family members.
He was born on October 3, 1930 in Jacksonville. He was a graduate of Florida State University, where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He served in the United States Navy as a pilot on the U.S.S. Midway. He worked for GMAC for many years and later joined his brother at Industrial Chemicals, Inc. He was a member of York Rite Mason, Zamora Shriners, Royal Order of Jesters, and Shades Valley Rotary. He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, FL. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Truth Seekers Class at Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
The family received friends on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 from 1-2 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. A funeral service followed at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Shades Mountain Baptist Church, 2017 Columbiana Road, Birmingham, AL 35216.

Obituary: Wilbur Driggers

Wilbur Driggers, age 74, of Perry, died Thursday, February 14, 2013, at his residence.
Wilbur was born on April 16, 1938 in Jasper to the late L.C. and the former Eva (Morgan) Driggers. Six brothers, Mildan, J.W., Ranell, Lavon, W.J. and Raymond Driggers, preceded Mr. Driggers in death.
Mr. Driggers was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Perry. He worked for 36 years with the State of Florida Division of Forestry in heavy equipment. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cossette (Rogers) Driggers of Perry; two daughters, Karen Everett and Debra Arnold, both of Perry; six brothers, Clarence Driggers, Morris Driggers and Ray Driggers, all of Live Oak, and Mike Driggers, Jimmy Driggers and Russell Driggers, all of Jasper; three sisters, Martha Ann Royals, of Live Oak, Claire Welch, of Port St. Joe and Evelee Parker, of Perry; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2013, at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home, with Pastor David Stephens officiating. Interment followed in Pisgah Cemetery. The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home.

Obituary: James (Jim) Chaplain Biggs

jamesbiggsJames (Jim) Chaplain Biggs born September 29, 1940 passed away February 5, 2013. He currently resided in Madison. He was born in Indianapolis, Ind., to Robert and Betty Sheppard. At age 17 he joined the United Stated Navy where he serve as chief of the engine room for 22 ½ years. He completed 6 tours in Vietnam. In 1985 he moved to Callahan, Florida until August of 2000 where he resided to Madison Fl. He is preceded in death by his parents. Robert and Betty Sheppard.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Debra L. Biggs; two sons, Jimmy Biggs (Missy) and Rusty Biggs of Ocala.; five daughters, Cathy Russo (Tim), of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Christine Gallamore (Todd of Copan, Okla., Suzi Crichton (Tony) of Bryceville, FL, Courtney Higginbotham (Bryon Hughes) and Tiffany Higginbotham (Steven Eberhardt) of Madison; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, Steve Sheppard, of Terre Haute, Ind.; and a sister, Wayann Noel, of Terre Haute, Inc.
Services were held Saturday, February 8, 2013 at 4 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church Located at 1997 NE Colin Kelly Hwy in Madison, FL 32340.

Jewel Lewis Branham, age 93, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 in Live Oak, FL.

Visitation and funeral services will be Friday 10:00 AM, February 15, 2013 at Bixler Memorial Chapel, Dowling Park, FL with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, FL on Saturday at 2:00pm.

The Branhams moved to Cocoa, FL in 1945 and then moved to Dowling Park, FL in 1997. They were members of The Village Church in Dowling Park, FL.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest H. Branham, a sister: Clois Yates and a brother Kermit Lewis.
She is survived by 1 son: Mark Branham (Willa) of Madison, FL; 1 daughter: Gail Kuester (William) of Hagerstown, MD; 1 brother: Roy Lewis (Betty) of St. Louis, MO; 4 grandchildren: Marcia Bass (Donnie), Wendy Branham, Gregory Kuester (Jessica), and Matthew Kuester; 4 Great Grandchildren: Gavin Branham Bass
Camryn Michelle Bass, Megan Elise Bass, and Reagan Jane Kuester.

Obituary: Roy Bruce Russell

Roy Bruce Russell, age 86, died Sunday, February 11, 2013, at Crosswinds Health and Rehab.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Cherry Lake Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 9-10 a.m. at the church.
Russell was born in Birmingham, Ala., and moved to Pinetta in 1974. He served in World War II and was a steel construction worker, plaster and cement mason and owner/operator of a trucking company. He was a member of Cherry Lake Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jayne Russell; four sons: Ronald Bruce Russell, Robert Russell, Donald Russell and Jeffery Russell; four daughters: Juanita Kavanagh, Barbara Winnington, Ronda Jayne Harbuck and Robin Russell Bennett; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
His parents, Ernest B. Russell, Sr., and Ethel Callan; a son, Larry Russell; a brother, Ernest B. Russell, Jr.; and a sister, Mary Juanita Yeargin, preceded him in death.

Obituary: James Dexter (Buddy) Scruggs

J. D. (Buddy) Scruggs, 93, of Madison, died Thursday, January 31, 2013, at home. Buddy was born March 11, 1919, in Perry. The Scruggs family moved to Madison about 1925 where Buddy attended school. He graduated in 1937 from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn. Buddy served in the U.S. Army in World War II where he worked in Europe in the area of military government. After his military service, he attended University of Florida and earned a B.S. in Forestry. He worked as a forester and Registered Land Surveyor (PLS#963) in the north Florida area for 40 years and was considered an expert by his peers in retracing the original surveyors’ footsteps and “proving” their section corners. Buddy served as a commissioner for the City of Madison for 21 years. He was also a founding member of Grace Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder, and elder emeritus.
He was predeceased by his parents James Dexter Scruggs and Corrine Porter Scruggs; his brother Richard Martin Scruggs; sisters Corrine S. Winderweedle, Martha Curtis Lafitte, and Mary S. Brinson; and his first wife of 36 years, Frances Owens Scruggs.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years Peggy Blake Scruggs and daughters Mary Ann Sanders (Tim) and Frances Adleburg; grandchildren Alexis Adleburg (Ryan Pulfer), Ben Adleburg, and Sara Sanders; great grandson Michael Owen Pulfer; six nieces and nephews including Nate Curtis (BJ) of Madison. He is also survived by Peggy’s children Michael Blake (Linda), Rachael Adams (Mike), and Suzanne Hooten (Gibson); and grandchildren Charissa Blake, Joshua Blake, Zachary Adams, Jared Adams (Allison), Caleb Adams, Caitlin Adams, Jacob Adams, Michael Hooten, and Joseph Hooten.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Madison, Florida, followed by burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 76, Madison, Florida 32341. Obituary: Emily Frances Albanese Thrift

Emily Frances Albanese Thrift, age 73, died Friday, January 25, 2013, in Madison.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at San Pedro Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
She was born in Boston, Mass., and moved to Lake Worth. When she was 10, they moved to Long Island, N.Y., then moved to Miami, Perry and Madison. She loved the outdoors, fishing, camping at parks, crocheting and canning foods and jellies.
She is survived by her husband, Willie A. “Buck” Thrift of Cherry Lake; two sons, Dennis Odom (Debbie) of Cherry Lake and Steve Odom of Dallas, Ga.; two daughters, Donna Cruce and Barbara Thrift of Cherry Lake; 13 grandchildren; and17 great-grandchildren.

Obituary: William Curtis Curry, Sr.

William Curtis Curry, Sr., age 84, of Jennings, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Lake City VA Medical Center in Lake City. Mr. Bill was born on August 27, 1928 in Okeechobee, to the late Clarence and Ollie Mae Rowell Curry. He served his country in the Army-Air Force and was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict and was awarded numerous service medals for his brave and dedicated service. Mr. Curry was a longtime resident of Madison County, FL. where he managed the Suwannee Swifty Store for a number of years. He was also a former resident of Steinhatchee, FL.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Evelyn Curry, Jennings; two sons, Billy Curry and his wife, Tammi Smith Curry of Jennings and Allen Curry of Australia; one beautiful daughter, Renee Benson and her husband Destin of Tallahasse.; nine grandchildren, Stephen Morris, Christina Rowell, Michael Rowell, Heather Morris Stormant (Andy), Will Curry, Aaron Rowell, Jordan Curry, Zachary Rowell and Caroline Rowell.
Graveside services were held Monday, January 28, 2013 at Waters Cemetery near Steinhatchee.

William “Rick” Sealey, Jr., 35, of Sierra Vista, Arizona passed away at Tucson Medical Center on Friday, January 18, 2013. Rick was born on January 28, 1977, in Thomasville, Georgia to William Sealey and Joan Hollie. He was raised in Live Oak, FL, and graduated from high school in Vilseck, Germany. He proudly served his country for 10 years with the U.S. Marine Corps and deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. At the time of his death, he was a field technology officer for the Customs & Border Protection. Rick married Nedra Roberson on May 7, 2005, in Las Vegas, NV. He enjoyed scuba diving and marksmanship. He was a proud father taking his children shooting and helping with homework. He loved his community and served as the High Knight Militant of the Knightly Order of the Winged Llama.

Rick is survived by his loving wife, Nedra, his children, Sydney, 14; Brayden, 13; and Logan, 6. Other survivors include his mother, Joan McCrimon and husband Michael; his father, William Sealey and wife, Linda, all of Live Oak, FL, as well as his siblings Amy Walker, Robby Smith and Brandy Dixson.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, January 23rd at Hatfield Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Hatfield Funeral Home. Rick will be taken back to Live Oak, FL for services, military and Border Patrol Honors as well as interment in Lee Memorial Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Garate, David Harris, Rick Habitzruther, Jon Bollin, and Tony Coles. His family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the William “Rick” Sealey, Jr. fund at Navy Federal Credit Union. All contributions to the fund will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project and the Border Patrol Foundation.

Obituary: Wilma Ruth “Ruthie” Ammons

Wilma Ruth “Ruthie” Ammons, age 91, died January 21, 2013 in the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Madison, Florida.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2:00 PM, January 25, 2013 in the chapel of Beggs Funeral Home in Madison with burial to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Donations may be made to, Sharon Community Church Building Fund, PO Box 471, Greenville FL 32331.

She was born in Madison County, Florida and lived around the area of Sirmons, Perry and Greenville while growing up. After she graduated high school she taught school for a short while in Sirmons and Aucilla. She also worked for Metal Products in Madison and was a homemaker. She loved country music and dancing and was always on the go. She was a member of Sharon Community Church in Greenville.

She is survived by 1 son, Jimmy Barlow (Carol) of Greenville. 2 grandchildren, James Barlow, Jr.(Crystal) of Greenville and Michelle Alderman (Sean) of Lee, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Obituary: Dorothy Vivian Crews

Dorothy Vivian Crews, 88, Greenville, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 17. Born in Leesville, S.C., she was one of 12 children of Henry Smith and Bessie Corley Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, and husband Floyd Crews. Mrs. Crews was a homemaker, residing in Fruitland Park, from the mid 1940’s until moving to Greenville in the late 1970’s. She was a member of Greenville Baptist Church and the Greenville Women’s Club.

She is survived by her longtime companion, Herman Melvin, Dowling Park; children, Lola Remson and husband Jack, Childersburg, Ala.; Barbara Rogers, Leesburg, Va.; Charlie Crews and wife Tarja, Williston; Pat Skok and husband Craig, Lawrenceville, Ga.; Joyce Sanders, Fort Walton Beach; and 19 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Crews will be conducted on Saturday, January 26, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, FL, with Pastor Toney Hill from Greenville Baptist Church officiating. Viewing will be held in the Beggs Chapel at 10 a.m., and interment will be at Greenville Cemetery following the funeral service.

Obituary: Alex Agner

William Alexander “Alex” Agner, 92, died at the Madison County Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning, January 20, 2013. Born in Madison County on December 6, 1920, he spent most of his life in the county, except for several years in western Tennessee.
He was a member of the Barbara Memorial Grace Church. For many years, he was involved in the turpentine business and, in his later years, was employed by the Madison Pallet Company.
He is survived by two daughters: Helen (Jimmy) Williamson of Nephi, Utah and Mary (Terry) Frownfelter of Chapin, S.C.; four grandchildren: Melinda Lee (Vince) Dye, Delbert Onda (Tina) Williamson, Cynthia Morine Phillipsen and Ira Alexander (Michelle) Williamson; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; sisters: Mildred Agner, Shellie Duran and Joyce Williams; and brothers, James Carroll, Sr. (Kitty), Robert, Paul, Sam (Jan) and Walter.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Willie James and Fannie Agner and brothers, Joe Dean, Cole, John and Raymond.
Funeral services will be held at Barbara Memorial Grace Church on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Barbara Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home in Madison.

Obit: Jacquelyn Thomas Hartley

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) family is deeply saddened by the passing of FAMU alumna Jacquelyn Thomas Hartley, the wife of Col. (Ret) Brodes H. Hartley.
Jacquelyn Thomas Hartley’s wake was held Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Christ Fellowship Church located at 8900 SW 168th St., Palmetto Bay, Fla 33157. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 10 a.m. at Christ Fellowship. The repast will occur at Palmetto Bay Village Center located at 18001 Old Cutler Road in Palmetto Bay, Fla.

A native of Madison, Fla., Jacquelyn Thomas Hartley earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from FAMU in 1956. She earned her master’s degree in maternal and child nursing from the University of Maryland, and her doctorate in education administration from Florida State University. Her first job was at the FAMU Hospital, where she excelled as a graduate nurse. She was licensed on her first sitting on the Registered Nursing Examination. Her scores were in the 19th percentile.
Hartley had a distinguished nursing career. Her professional experience included many years of working for the Federal government and state of Florida. Hartley served as an associate professor at FAMU from 1982-1984. She had advanced from faculty to chairperson to associate dean. She served twice as acting dean during her tenure. She retired from Florida International University as a special projects officer.
Her honors and awards included the following: Distinguished Fellow Award and the Gallery of Distinction at FAMU, one of FAMU’s 125 Outstanding Alumni, The Black Employees Arad at Florida International University, the Family Christian Association of America Inc., and the Black Achievers Award. She was the first African-American president of the District 5 Florida Nursing Association.
She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., The Girlfriends and The Holidays. She was also involved with the Parent-Teacher Association for her grandchildren from elementary school through high school.
Hartley was very active in her community. She volunteered at Community Health Inc. of South Florida in the Human Resources Department and Family Medicine. She faithfully volunteered at Christ Fellowship Church in the nursery, on the health committee as well as served as greeter on Sunday mornings and prepared folders for service. Her home often served as a regular meeting place for the South Miami-Dade Chapter of the FAMU National Alumni Association.
She was a loyal FAMUan who knew at a very early age that she was destined to attend FAMU, a place where her mother, sisters and brothers attended. During her FAMU Freshmen Orientation Week, she met her future husband, Col. Hartley. They married after dating for four years and had been married for 55 years. The couple had two children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She leaves to mourn her passing a loving and devoted husband Col. Brodes H. Hartley II of Palmetto Bay; two children Cmndr. Brodes Hartley III, and Jacquelyn Hartley White both of Miami;  six grandchildren and one great grandchild. A loving sister Cheryl Thomas-Tate of Las Vegas, Nev., aunts, uncles, numerous friends, and extended family also survived her.

Obit: Robert Brady “Bob Cur Dog” Cade, Sr.

Robert Brady “Bob Cur Dog” Cade, Sr., 69, of Madison, left this earth for the Kingdom of Heaven on Jan. 2, 2013, with family at his bedside.
Bob was born Aug. 12, 1943 in Lexington, Miss., and moved to Live Oak in 1956, where he graduated in 1961 from Suwannee High School.
After receiving a degree in education from Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., he was a teacher and coach in Mayo and Wildwood. Later in his career, he worked with the State of Mississippi and the State of Florida’s prison systems in various rehabilitation programs, where he was able to positively affect many lives.
His parents, Lois Brady Cade and John Allen Cade of Live Oak, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his son, Robert Brady Cade, Jr.; his grandson, Robert Bryce Cade; his former wife and dear friend, Gwen Brown Cade of Perry; his sister, Jamie Cade McKenzie (Rod) of Jacksonville; and a niece and nephew, as well as many cousins.
The “Cur Dog” is what Bob named himself when he turned his life over to God, and under that nickname began a Christian ministry that inspired many people to overcome and rise above the circumstances in their lives. “On the line with guts and God” was his motto as he spoke and motivated many groups, including A.A., football teams and students throughout the south. Bob was at his happiest when he was giving pep talks and walking the sidelines with his Madison County High School Cowboys football team.
He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Madison, where there will be a memorial service and celebration of his life on Jan. 13, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Preston Gainey officiating.
