Obituary: Sarah Taylor Malone

Sarah Taylor Malone, age 59, died Monday, May 6, 2013 at Capital Regional Medical Center.

Graveside funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home.

She was born in Monticello and had lived in Greenville since 1978. She loved her family, and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband: William L “Willie” Malone of Greenville; one son: William “Toby” Malone (Bridget) of Greenville; three brothers: Riley Taylor of Jennings, John Taylor of Quitman, Ga., and James Taylor of Key West.; two sisters: Hazel Schuebert of Lake Park, Ga., and Carolyn Taylor Scott of Tenn.; and two granddaughters: Kersten and Kiley Malone.

Obituary: George Florence Joseph

George Florence Joseph, age 89, died Monday in Haven Hospice in Lake City.

Graveside Funeral service will be Wednesday 4 p.m. at Mt. Horeb Cemetery.

She lived in Valdosta, Ga., before going to Haven Hospice and operated a Laundry Mat. She was a member of Forrest St. United Methodist Church, Valdosta, GA.

She is survived by two daughters: Florence Diane Henderson-Simmons of Lake City, and Mary Ann Willis of Nashville, Ga.; one sister: Van Dalah Thompson of Sanford; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Sally Lou Wilson, age 80 died Monday, April 29, 2013 at Haven Hospice in Lake City.

She graduated from Madison High School in 1951, and retired from Gold Kist and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Obituary: Jack Oxford Wade

Jack Oxford Wade, 97, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 in Bainbridge.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Oak Ridge cemetery in Madison, FL. In lieu of flowers, family asked donations be made to a favorite charity.
Jack was a native of Madison Co. FL. where he lived most of his life. He operated the Pure Oil Station in front of the Smith Goza Mansion and later was owner/operator of Jack Wade Oil Company. He was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Madison, members of the Lions Club and the Country Club, enjoyed playing golf and was a volunteer Fire Fighter. He later retired to Tallahassee spending several years of his life at Westminster Oaks.
He is survived by his daughter, Sissy McCown (husband John) of Attapulgas, GA;
two grandchildren, Eloise McCown Johnson (husband David) and John McCown (wife Kate) of Bentonville, AR; great-grandchildren, David James, Sarah Kate, Caroline Wade and Eloise Grace Johnson and Jack, Mary Ella and Ashlyn McCown.
Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Bronson Wade.

Obituary: Danny Daniel

Danny Jerome Daniel, age 70, died Monday, April 22, 2013 in Tallahassee.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Greenville. Visitation was held Wednesday from 5 – 7 at Beggs Funeral Home.

He was born in Columbus, Ohio and lived most of his life in Madison. He was a member of American Legion #224. He loved to hunt, fish, and cook. He was a Avid Gator Fan and loved his family and friends. He attended Unity Baptist Church.

He is survived by 1 son: Jay Daniel (Carla) of Leesburg, GA; 2 daughters: Nicole Roddenberry (Keith) of Monticello and Marsha Bass (Robert) of Greenville; One sister: Susie Stafford (Doyle) of Madison. Six Grandchildren and two Great
Grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Linda Davis and his parents: Woodson and Dot Daniel

Mrs. Ida Mae Selph Gerald, age 87 died April 20, 2013 in Madison, Florida.
Graveside funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Monday, April 22, 2013 in the Cherry Lake Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the cemetery. Rev. Benjie Dial will be officiating.
She was born in Mayo, Florida and had lived in Pell City, Alabama before moving to Madison County 25 years ago. She worked as an office manager in a doctors office for many years. She was a big NASCAR fan and loved Alabama Football. She was a member of Cherry Lake Methodist Church.
She is survived by a brother, T. M. Selph of Citrus FL, and a sister, Melba Barrs of Madison FL. several nieces and nephews, Randell Selph, Wayne Selph, Kirk Selph, Linda Williams, Ray Selph, Paul Selph, Billy Selph, Jerry Selph, Bobby Barrs and Lisa Tuten.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Bob Gerald, and 2 brothers, Bill Selph and Paul Selph.

Obituary: Thelma Mae Thompson

Thelma Mae Thompson, age 93, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 in Madison.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Macedonia Baptist Church with burial at Macedonia Cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday, from 4 – 6 PM at Beggs Funeral Home.

She was Matriarch of five generations. She was the daughter of Ida Mae Harvell and Luther Gordon Thompson. She was raised by Ida Mae and Robert Lee Bembry.

She is survived by 6 children: Joan Turner of Atlanta, GA, Glorida Bynum of La Grange, GA, Patrick Driggers of Middleburg, FL, Sharon Babcock of Jacksonville, FL, Vickie Langford of Jacksonville, FL and Mona Rector of Middleburg, Florida. 21 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren, and 16 Great Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two children Diane and Mike Driggers.

Obituary: Dorothy Pauline Lewis

dorothylewisDorothy Pauline Lewis of Monticello, 86, departed this earth to be united with her Savior on April 16, 2013. Dorothy was born in Elkland, Missouri to Ranzy E. and Lessie Jones Richerson. She graduated high school in Elkland, attended secretarial school in St. Louis, Missouri, met and married Paul R. Lewis on Aug 30, 1944. Paul and Dorothy lived in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, during WWII, before moving to Anchorage, Alaska. After 10 years in Alaska, they lived in Washington, DC for 7 years, finally moving to Jefferson County, Florida, in August of 1964 to raise their 3 sons and farm the land they had bought in 1952. Dorothy and Paul raised cattle, corn, hay, peanuts, and timber together until Paul’s death in 1983. Afterwards, Dorothy continued to manage and operate the family farm near Aucilla with the help of her sons, daughters-in-law and 5 grandchildren.

Dorothy lived a full and active life having backpacked, camped, hunted and fished the Alaskan Wilderness before it was a state; ridden around Daytona Racetrack in a racecar; flown in a helicopter over an erupting volcano in Hawaii; cruised to several foreign countries; rode horseback in the mountains; deep-sea fished in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico; panned for gold; and cheered and clapped at countless ballgames, plays and debates for her grandchildren, whom she dearly loved.

Dorothy was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church in Aucilla. She was active in the Middle Florida Baptist Association and the Women’s Missionary Union, where she lived to serve in any way she could. At Central Baptist she kept the nursery and served as church clerk/secretary for many, many years. She cleaned the church, weeded the flower beds, pinch hit playing the piano, taught VBS, and delighted in cooking for 5th Sunday and Wednesday night dinners.

Dorothy was a member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau where she served on the Board of Directors, as past-president, and State Women’s Officer. She also served on the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), as well as on the Healthyways Board. In 1989 Dorothy’s family received the Jefferson County Farm Family of the Year award, and in 2011 Dorothy was inducted into the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Hall-of-Fame.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 39 years, Paul Revere Lewis; her son Mark E. Lewis; a sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Lowell Winsor; and brothers Vaughn, Eugene, and Quentin Richerson.

She is survived by sons John C. (Mary Alice) Lewis of Madison, Florida and David S. (Mona) Lewis of Monticello; grandchildren C. Taylor Lewis, MD, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; J. Elliott Lewis of Tallahassee, Florida; Jacob D. Lewis of Madison, Wisconsin; W. Wilson Lewis of Gainesville, Florida; and Abby S. Lewis of Memphis, Tennessee; brothers David (Mary Lou) Richerson of Elkland, Missouri and Kenneth (Shirley) Richerson of Marshfield, Missouri; sisters-in-law Gerri Richerson of Fairgrove, Missouri; Leona Richerson of Springfield, Missouri; and Willa Richerson of Lodi, California; and dozens of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Beggs Funeral Home of Monticello, Florida. Calling hours will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 19, at Beggs Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 20th, at Central Baptist Church, 625 Tindell Road, Monticello, Florida. Obituary: Mary Janice Reams

Mary ReamsMary Janice Reams, 64, formerly of Lee, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2013 at Heritage Healthcare after a lengthy illness.
Mary was born on June 6, 1948 in Miami, to the late Ila Clinton and Zora Edgman Jones. The family moved to Lee, when Mary was a teenager and she continued to live there most of her adult life.
At the end of 2010, Mary entered a nursing home in Valdosta, Ga., due to declining health and to be nearer her daughter and other family members. Mary proudly served as a Duty Officer with the Florida Highway Patrol for 19 ½ years before retiring due to medical problems. She was a huge animal lover and had many pets throughout her life, often taking in strays. She also enjoyed spending time with family, cooking and was very patriotic.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Jon Lasseter of Valdosta, Ga..; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Louise Jones of Live Oak.; two grandsons, Matthew Lasseter of Valdosta, Ga., and Jonathan Lasseter II of Arlington, Va..; a granddaughter, Hannah Lasseter of Guyton, Ga..; seven nieces and one nephew and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. She is also survived by many special cousins and extended family and friends.

A memorial service for Mary Janice Reams will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Merrell Lasseter officiating. Bobbie Jean Scott, age 73, died April 15, 2013 in Tallahassee,
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Beggs Funeral Home with burial at Evergreen Cemetery.. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 2:00 at Beggs Funeral Home.
She was born in Aucilla, FL on November 23, 1939 to Robert and Pauline Pickels.
After living in Monticello, Fl during her childhood years, she moved to Greenville, FL where she lived the remainder of her life. Graduated from Greenville High School in 1957.
She worked for the State of Florida for 45 years.
She enjoyed retirement the last 12 years of her life and taking care of her two “furry sons” (dogs) Sam and Shadow.
She was an avid Florida State Seminole fan. She enjoyed going to the football games for over 35 years.
She enjoyed going on family vacations, spending all holidays with family and friends, but especially spending time with her immediate family, her siblings and their children and her Mama and Daddy.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Monticello, FL.
Survived by her husband of 51 years: Alec R. Scott of Greenville, FL, her daughters: Tonya Blackman (Murray) of McIntosh, FL, Stacey Rudd (Eric Byrd) of Greenville, FL, two sisters: Ida Jane Cone of Tallahassee, FL, Beth Kinsey (Roy) of Monticello, FL and 1 brother: Luther Pickels (Barbara) of Monticello, FL. Grandchildren: Alexis Mills and her soon to be grandsons Landon and Cambron Byrd. She was also survived by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, Robert and Pauline Pickels and her brother- in- law, Tommy Cone.
She is loved and will be missed every day by her family and friends.

Obituary: James “Chip” M. Durant

James “Chip” M. DuRant, 63, of Tallahassee, died on Thursday, April 11th at his home. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Becky DuRant.
Chip grew up in Madison and had lived in Tallahassee for over 40 years. He leaves behind three sons, J.D. DuRant (Alix Miller) of Tallahassee; Tyler DuRant (Ashley) of Crawfordville; and Will DuRant of Tallahassee; three brothers, Jules DuRant (Terri) of Winter Haven; Frank DuRant (Laura) of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Gene DuRant (Cissy) of Columbus, GA; one sister, Bet Miller (Steve) of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Conner and Collin DuRant; and two step-grandchildren in waiting, Harper and Campbell.
A Funeral Service was held Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Bevis Funeral Home in Tallahassee. The family received friends following the Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United Way of the Big Bend.

Obituary: Elder Simp Clemons, Jr.

Elder Simp Clemons, Jr., 83, of Greenville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Greenville, with burial in the Church Cemetery. Viewing-visitation is Friday 3-7:30 p.m. at TILLMAN OF MONTICELLO 850-997-5553. A lifelong Greenville resident, Elder Clemons was a retired maintenance engineer for Florida Plywood. He was an ordained elder in the Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Cherishing his love and memory are his devoted wife of 63 years, Mother Alease Alexander Clemons; son, Carroll “Keith” Clemons; daughter, Chiquita Clemons; sister, Amanda Rivers; grandchildren, Tonja, Zachary (Demetris), Gregory and Alphonso Clemons and Bernard White; daughters-in-law, Cheryl and Veronica Clemons; sisters-in-law, Annie Williams and Janie Clemons and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sons, Willie and Gardell; parents, Simp Sr. and Ruby Greenwood Clemons; siblings, Theodore Clemons, Perlean Dixon and Kay Bertha Evans.

Obituary: Evelena Leah Surles

Evelena Leah SurlesEvelena Leah Surles, 85, passed away March 31, 2013, in Haven Hospice in Chiefland, from a long illness. Family surrounded her when she went home to her Lord.
Eve moved to Madison in 1977 with her husband and family and opened a feed mill, Farm Fresh Feeds, Inc., and farmed.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Calvin Surles, Jr.; four children, Kathy (Jim) Geren of Tenn., Charlene (Scott) Berryman of Ala., Jamie (Selena) Surles of Fla., Kim (Doug) Pickles, Jr. of Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She was surrounded by love and gave love to all.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Obituary: Jake Johnson

John Franklin “ Jake” Johnson, age 83, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at his home in Lee.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

He was born on February 16, 1930 in Lee to his parents Wilford Mitchell and Dovie Albern Johnson. He returned to Lee in 1978 coming from Jacksonville. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family, and loved to dance, work in his yard and gardening. He was an avid Gator Fan, and served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a PBX Installer for Southern Bell where he retired.

He is survived by one daughter: Dianne Beck of Lee; son-in-law: Marshall Beck of Live Oak; one son: Robert Johnson (Tangela) of Valdosta; two brothers: Ed Johnson (Sarah) of Live Oak, Leo Johnson (Linda) of Holly Hill; three grandchildren: Stephanie Salter (Cole), Aaron Beck, and Alan Matthew Walker; one great grandchild: Madelyn Salter; A special nephew, Gene Clark who was raised as a brother, and several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his two wives; Ferrice Johnson and Dot Johnson; Three sisters: Patricia Kelley, Lessie Mae Rivers, and Lena Hawley; One brother: Robert M. Johnson.

Obituary: Robbie Sale

Robbie Sale, age 88, of Blountstown, Florida passed away Monday, April 1, 2013 in Tallahassee, Florida. Robbie was born February 7, 1925 to the late Clifford and Martha Elizabeth (Richardson) Black in Lee, Florida. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends in Blountstown Bridge Club (a member since 1952) and enjoyed having lunch with the Red Hat Ladies. She was a member of Blountstown First Baptist Church and Estelle Ramsey Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sale and a granddaughter, Corbin Elizabeth Daughtry.

Survivors include daughters, Jackie Stewart and her husband Kenny of Mt. Dora, Florida and Robyn Daughtry and her husband Bobby of Tallahassee; grandchildren, Tony Stewart, Jack Stewart, Joshua Daughtry, and Jacob Daughtry; two great-grandchildren Kenley Stewart and Caden Stewart; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2013 in the Chapel at Adams Funeral Home with Mike Ellis and Reverend Tim Rhoads officiating. Interment will follow in Nettle Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 4 at the funeral home.

Obituary: Virginia Ester (Glotzbach) Thompson

Virginia Ester (Glotzbach) Thompson passed March 20th 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Homes in Quitman Ga.
Virginia was born August 15th, 1922 to Otto J. and Irma E. Glotzbach in Paxico Kansas. Her family lived briefly in Lillis, Kansas, moving ultimately to Wamego Kansas. Virginia graduated from Wamego High School in 1939, and then attended Kansas State University. During this time she met her husband Louis Carlton Thompson who was stationed at Fr. Riley Kansas. They were married on November 13, 1943 and were married for sixty five years before her husband’s passing in 2008.
After Louis finished his Master’s Degree at Kansas State University the couple moved to Minneapolis Kansas, where Louis taught high school and Virginia was a domestic engineer. In 1967 the couple moved to Madison Florida. Louis became the Athletic Director at North Florida Junior College while Virginia became the college bookstore manager. They both worked for the college for over twenty years before retiring.
Virginia was known by her family as an excellent cook, mother and animal lover. She was also known as a superb dancer. Her family and friends have fond memories of their attending College dances where Virginia and Louis would liven up the crowd. Her two sons recall that every Sunday night the breakfast table would be moved as the couple would Swing, Waltz and Foxtrot to the Lawrence Welk Show. Virginia was the first Republican Committee Woman in Madison County and served in this position for many years. Virginia and Louis attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Madison County for many years before his passing and her moving to Quitman Ga.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert E. Glotzbach and her sister Alice E. (Glotzbach) Solden. She is survived by two sons Stuart Thompson and Andrew Thompson. As well as four grand-children, five great grandchildren and two sisters Joyce (Glotzbach) Green of Overland Park Kansas and Patricia Irma (Glotzbach) Huddleston of Camillus, New York.
Memorial Services will be held on April 28th , 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace Presbyterian Church in Madison Florida.

Patricia (Patty) Prince Marker

Patricia (Patty) Prince Marker, 88, passed away March 21, 2013 at her home in Madison, FL. She was born May 23, 1924 in Perry, FL, to Wm. Carey and Claudia Edwards Prince.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 27, 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Madison, FL. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 104 NE Horry Ave., Madison, FL 32340.
Patty grew up in Greenville, FL and graduated from Greenville High School. She attended the Florida State College for Women (FSU) and the University of Alabama – Dothan.
She worked in the family business, Greenville Plywoods, Inc. as secretary/treasurer and director with her father, corporation president and owner, until his death and dissolution of the business. She later resided in Tallahassee, FL where she was an accountant for the Florida State University Athletic Department until her retirement. In 2002, she returned to Madison County.
A member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Madison, Patty was also active in the DAR, the UDC, a charter member of Madison Co. Genealogical Society, Florida Pioneer Descendants, Madison Co. Republican Club, Cherry Lake American Legion and lifetime member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Patty was an avid gardener, history buff, outstanding home cook, and devoted Seminole fan.
Patty is survived by son, John L. Marker, Jr. (Elaine) of Waxhaw, NC and daughter Patricia M. Hinton of Greenville, FL; granddaughters Paige Hinton of Tallahassee, FL, and Eve Ingram (James) of Climax, GA; great grandsons Gage and Sean; sisters Mateel Mays (George) of Peachtree City, GA and Claudia Scruggs of Sugar Hill, GA, in addition to beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Gloria Outler and Marjorie MacKenzie, and her parents, Wm. Carey and Claudia Prince.

Obituary: Margaret Jean Richardson Brandies

Margaret Jean Richardson Brandies, 87, of Madison, FL., passed away peacefully at the Langdale Hospice House, Valdosta, GA, March 14, 2013. Jean was born Feb. 2, 1926 in Jacksonville, Fl to Warren Spencer Richardson and Kate Keel DuRant Richardson.
She spent much of her childhood living in South Carolina and met the love of her life, Cortez Martin “Buck” Brandies in St. Simons Island, GA. Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Madison, FL. Buck and Jean made their home in Madison, where Jean was involved throughout the community. For years she coordinated the Madison Needy Children’s Christmas program and was recognized as Madison County Citizen of the Year for her dedication to the children of Madison County. She was a member of the Madison County Foundation for Excellence In Education, the Woman’s Club and Garden Club and was well-known throughout the community for her wonderful flower arrangements.
Jean was a loving mother, Nana, aunt and person whose life touched and influenced not only her family, but many other people from all walks of life. She was a blessing to all who knew her, and to the community of Madison. She will be sorely missed, but lovingly and most gratefully remembered….
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Buck, her granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Brandies and her sister, Barbara Hough. She is survived by her daughters, Frances Kate Brandies Marshall, of Tallahassee, Fl, Margaret Ann “Maggie” Davis (Andy) of Valdosta, GA, and her son, Cortez Martin “Corky” Brandies, Jr. of Madison, FL, and Jean Boothe Brandies her grandchildren, Benjamin Martin Brandies (Kim), Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Lauth (Jarrod), Corey Warren Brandies, all of Madison, FL; Amberbrooke Lodge (Justin) of Quitman, GA; Justin Davis (Brittany), and Hank Buckley Davis of Valdosta, GA, and six great grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30pm, Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Madison First Methodist Church, Madison FL. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at Beggs funeral home Madison, FL. Memorials may be made to the Langdale Hospice House, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602

Herman Gilbert Richardson, age 69, died Saturday, March 2, 2013
at home.

Graveside Funeral Service was held Monday, March 4, 2013 at San Pedro Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday from 5 – 7 at Beggs Funeral Home.

He was born in Wauchula and moved to Madison in 1976. He worked as a Mason and was a member of Reepers of Harvest Church.

He is survived by his wife: Helen Cruce Richardson of Madison; 2 daughters: Retha Walker (Danny) of Hamilton County, and Rhonda Cruce-Dowdy (Mike) of Madison; 1 sister: Inez Jenkins of Wauchula; 8 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.
